Rapid brain responses independently predict gain maximization and loss minimization during economic decision making.

Success in many decision-making scenarios depends on the ability to maximize gains and minimize losses. Even if an agent knows which cues lead to gains and which lead to losses, that agent could still make choices yielding suboptimal rewards. Here, by analyzing event-related potentials (ERPs) recorded in humans during a probabilistic gambling task, we show that individuals' behavioral tendencies to maximize gains and to minimize losses are associated with their ERP responses to the receipt of those gains and losses, respectively. We focused our analyses on ERP signals that predict behavioral a

Brain potentials in outcome evaluation: when social comparison takes effect.

Social comparison, in which people evaluate their opinions and abilities by comparing them with the opinions and abilities of others, is a central feature of human social life. Previous work has highlighted the importance of social comparison in reward processing. However, the time-course of the social comparison effect in outcome evaluation remains largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to explore to what extent brain activity is modulated by social comparison between an individual and their anonymous partner. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were measured while the participants viewed

Long-Term Orchestral String Learning and Event-Related Potentials of Inhibitory Control in Children From Disadvantaged Communities.

BACKGROUND: Children from low socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds are at increased risk for delays in executive function (EF), particularly inhibitory control and attentional regulation. Orchestral string music training is a complex multisensory activity that repeatedly engages executive control systems, yet its neurophysiological mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. In this study we examined whether prolonged string training is associated with enhanced neural dynamics underlying inhibitory control in socioeconomically disadvantaged children. METHODS: We re-analyzed 32-channel elec

Toward a Predictive Coding Account of Hypnotic Hypoalgesia: Integrating EEG Oscillations and Somatosensory Evoked Responses.

Hypnotic hypoalgesia effectively reduces various types of pain, but its neurophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. EEG and somatosensory event-related potentials (SERPs) can help elucidate how hypnotic suggestions influence pain processing across sensory, emotional, and cognitive domains. This review synthesizes evidence on EEG oscillatory activity and SERP correlates in hypnotic pain modulation and interprets the findings through predictive coding and active inference frameworks. The review integrated relevant studies on EEG frequency-band oscillations, SERPs, and the modulation of pain by

ERPs predict symptomatic distress and recovery in sub-acute mild traumatic brain injury.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) can affect high-level executive functioning long after somatic symptoms resolve. We tested if simple EEG responses within an oddball paradigm could capture variance relevant to this clinical problem. The P3a and P3b components reflect bottom-up and top-down processes driving engagement with exogenous stimuli. Since these features are related to primitive decision abilities, abnormal amplitudes following mTBI may account for problems in the ability to exert executive control. Sub-acute (<2 weeks) mTBI participants (N = 38) and healthy controls (N = 24) were as

Early and late stages of visual processing in individuals in prodromal state and first episode schizophrenia: an ERP study.

BACKGROUND: P300 deficits in schizophrenia patients are well established, especially in the auditory modality. Several studies have also reported P300 abnormalities in schizophrenia in visual tasks, but these findings are inconsistent. Furthermore, reports on P300 in visual modality in prodromal subjects are very limited. While P300 indexes relatively late and complex cognitive functions such as context updating in working memory, sensory-evoked components such as the P1/N1 primarily index early stages of perceptual processing. Several previous studies suggest that P300 reduction in schizophre

Remediation effects on N170 and P300 in children with developmental dyslexia.

This study aimed at investigating the ERP correlates (N170 and P300 components) of a multimodal training program focused in dyslexia. ERPs were obtained from 32 electrodes in 24 French children with developmental dyslexia (mean age 10 years 7 months) during a visual lexical decision task. All the children received two intensive two-month evidence-based training programs: one based on phonemic awareness and the other on visual and orthographic processing in a cross-over design. Ten control children matched on chronological age were also tested. We showed dissociation between N170, P300 and beha

Electrophysiological manifestations in adults with HIV/AIDS submitted and not submitted to antiretroviral therapy.

BACKGROUND: auditory evoked potentials (AEP) assess the neuroelectric activity on the auditory pathway -from the auditory nerve to the cerebral cortex - in response to an acoustic stimulus or event. Studies have demonstrated electrophysiological abnormalities in individuals with HIV/AIDS. AIM: to characterize the hearing electrophysiological manifestations in adults with HIV/AIDS by comparing the results obtained in the group exposed to antiretroviral therapy with those obtained in the group not exposed to such treatment. METHOD: electrophysiological evaluation of hearing (Auditory Brainstem

Changes in auditory P3 event-related potentials in uremic patients undergoing haemodialysis.

A study on event-related P300 potential (ERPs) was performed in 20 patients suffering from chronic uraemia and undergoing haemodialysis in order to assessing the functioning of their cognitive processes. The patients were evaluated before and after a standard treatment of haemodialysis. The P300 potential was studied by means of the "oddball" paradigm and the acoustic modality. Moreover the patients' performance was assessed on the basis of the following psychological tests: the Mini Mental Test, the Number Connection Test and the Digit Span of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale. A signific

Electroencephalographic Correlates and Predictors of Treatment Outcome in OCD: A Brief Narrative Review.

Electroencephalography (EEG) measures the brain's electrical activity with high temporal resolution. In comparison to neuroimaging modalities such as MRI or PET, EEG is relatively cheap, non-invasive, portable, and simple to administer, making it an attractive tool for clinical deployment. Despite this, studies utilizing EEG to investigate obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are relatively sparse. This contrasts with a robust literature using other brain imaging methodologies. The present review examines studies that have used EEG to examine predictors and correlates of response in OCD and dra

Attention in essential tremor: evidence from event-related potentials.

Clinically subtle executive dysfunctions have recently been described in essential tremor (ET), though the presence of attentional deficits is still unclear. We investigated the psychophysiological aspects of attention in ET, using event-related potentials (ERPs). Twenty-one non-demented patients with ET and 21 age- and sex-matched healthy controls underwent a psychophysiological evaluation. P300 components and the Contingent Negative Variation (CNV) were recorded. The latencies and amplitudes of the P3a and P3b subcomponents and CNV areas were evaluated. Possible correlations between clinical

The utility of P300 as a schizophrenia endophenotype and predictive biomarker: clinical and socio-demographic modulators in COGS-2.

Reduced auditory P300 amplitude is a robust schizophrenia deficit exhibiting the qualities of a viable genetic endophenotype. These include heritability, test-retest reliability, and trait-like stability. Recent evidence suggests that P300 may also serve as a predictive biomarker for transition to psychosis during the schizophrenia prodrome. Historically, the utility of the P300 has been limited by its clinical nonspecificity, cross-site measurement variability, and required EEG expertise. The Consortium on the Genetics of Schizophrenia (COGS-2) study provided an opportunity to examine the con

Prolonged intermittent theta burst stimulation targeting the left prefrontal cortex and cerebellum does not affect executive functions in healthy individuals.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for alleviating negative symptoms and cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia commonly targets the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (LDLPFC). However, the therapeutic effectiveness of rTMS at this site remains inconclusive and increasingly, studies are focusing on cerebellar rTMS. Recently, prolonged intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) has emerged as a rapid-acting form of rTMS with promising clinical benefits. This study explored the cognitive and neurophysiological effects of prolonged iTBS administered to the LDLPFC and cerebellu

Pinpointing the deficit in executive functions in adolescents with dyslexia performing the Wisconsin card sorting test: an ERP study.

Adolescents with dyslexia exhibit well-established impairments in executive abilities. The Wisconsin card sorting test (WCST) is an executive test that yields surprisingly inconsistent results with this population. The current study aimed to shed light on the contradictory findings in the literature regarding the performance levels by individuals with dyslexia in WCST. We used a computerized-WCST (named the 'Madrid-Card Sorting Test') assessing executive functions using the Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) methodology. Adolescents with dyslexia exhibited a higher error rate and slower reaction

Electrophysiological and behavioral effects of frontal transcranial direct current stimulation on cognitive fatigue in multiple sclerosis.

Fatigue is one of the most common and debilitating symptoms affecting patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Sustained cognitive effort induces cognitive fatigue, operationalized as subjective exhaustion and fatigue-related objective alertness decrements with time-on-task. During prolonged cognitive testing, MS patients show increased simple reaction times (RT) accompanied by lower amplitudes and prolonged latencies of the P300 event-related potential. Previous studies suggested a major role of structural and functional abnormalities in the frontal cortex including a frontal hypo-activation in
