Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have shown that patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) may have various vestibular abnormalities, and these mainly present as subclinical lesions. In this study, we attempted to combine ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) and cervical (VEMPs) to investigate vestibular dysfunction in patients with OSAS. METHODS: Thirty-eight patients with severe OSAS and 42 healthy controls were enrolled and divided into two groups according to results of polysomnography. All parameters of VEMP graphs were analyzed. RESULTS: The response rate of ocul

Extraction of Evoked Compound Nerve Action Potentials from Vagus Nerve Recordings.

Cervical vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a neuromodulation therapy for the treatment of several chronic disorders. The effects of VNS are mediated by activation of nerve fibers of different types. In order to maximize the desired and minimize the undesired effects of VNS, assessing activation of vagal fiber types by VNS is essential. Evoked compound nerve action potentials (CNAPs) are commonly used as a method to estimate vagal fiber activation in the context of neurostimulation. However, vagal CNAPs are frequently contaminated by signals from non-neural sources, like electrocardiography (ECG

Steady-State Visually Evoked Potentials Elicited by Multifrequency Pattern-Reversal Stimulation.

PURPOSE: It has been shown that multifrequency stimulation with multifocal electroretinography can reduce recording time without a loss in signal-to-noise ratio. Here, we studied the applicability of multifrequency stimulations for steady-state visually evoked potential (VEP) recordings. METHODS: Multifrequency VEPs were recorded monocularly from 10 healthy subjects using pattern-reversal stimuli. The reversal frequency varied between 5 and 30 Hz. Pattern-reversal checkerboard stimuli were generated using four square arrays, each containing 100 light-emitting diodes (LEDs), positioned in four

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in practice: Methods, pitfalls and clinical applications.

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) are a useful and increasingly popular component of the neuro-otology test battery. These otolith-dependent reflexes are produced by stimulating the ears with air-conducted sound or skull vibration and recorded from surface electrodes placed over the neck (cervical VEMPs) and eye muscles (ocular VEMPs). VEMP abnormalities have been reported in various diseases of the ear and vestibular system, and VEMPs have a clear role in the diagnosis of superior semicircular canal dehiscence. However there is significant variability in the methods used to stimul

Effects of acute isometric resistance exercise on cervicomedullary motor evoked potentials.

Cervicomedullary motor evoked potentials (CMEPs) in relaxed biceps brachii have been reported to facilitate after acute isometric exercise of the elbow flexors. This facilitation, which reflects either enhanced corticospinal transmission or increased motoneurone excitability, has only been documented in the limb posture used during exercise. In Experiment 1, we tested if these spinal changes "transfer" to a second posture. Fourteen individuals completed 12 sets of high-force isometric contractions of the elbow flexors with the forearm pronated. Before and after exercise, biceps CMEPs were acqu…

Effects of Long-Term Musical Training on Cortical Auditory Evoked Potentials.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence suggests that musicians, as a group, have superior frequency resolution abilities when compared with nonmusicians. It is possible to assess auditory discrimination using either behavioral or electrophysiologic methods. The purpose of this study was to determine if the acoustic change complex (ACC) is sensitive enough to reflect the differences in spectral processing exhibited by musicians and nonmusicians. DESIGN: Twenty individuals (10 musicians and 10 nonmusicians) participated in this study. Pitch and spectral ripple discrimination were assessed using both behavioral an

Fractal Dimension Analysis of Transient Visual Evoked Potentials: Optimisation and Applications.

PURPOSE: The visual evoked potential (VEP) provides a time series signal response to an external visual stimulus at the location of the visual cortex. The major VEP signal components, peak latency and amplitude, may be affected by disease processes. Additionally, the VEP contains fine detailed and non-periodic structure, of presently unclear relevance to normal function, which may be quantified using the fractal dimension. The purpose of this study is to provide a systematic investigation of the key parameters in the measurement of the fractal dimension of VEPs, to develop an optimal analysis

Evoked potentials are useful for diagnosis of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) has been differentiated from relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) by clinical, laboratory, and pathological findings, including the presence of the anti-aquaporin 4 antibody. Measurement of evoked potentials (EPs) is often used for the diagnosis of RRMS, although the possibility of applying EPs to the diagnosis of NMOSD has not been investigated in detail. Eighteen patients with NMOSD and 28 patients with RRMS were included in this study. The patients' neurological symptoms and signs were examined and their EPs were recorded. Characterist…

Visual evoked potentials to change in coloration of a moving bar.

In our previous study we found that it takes less time to detect coloration change in a moving object compared to coloration change in a stationary one (Kreegipuu etal., 2006). Here, we replicated the experiment, but in addition to reaction times (RTs) we measured visual evoked potentials (VEPs), to see whether this effect of motion is revealed at the cortical level of information processing. We asked our subjects to detect changes in coloration of stationary (0(°)/s) and moving bars (4.4 and 17.6(°)/s). Psychophysical results replicate the findings from the previous study showing decreased RT…

Effects of motion sickness severity on the vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness is a common debilitating condition associated with both actual and perceived motion. Despite the commonality, little is known about the underlying physiological mechanisms. One theory proposes that motion sickness arises from a mismatch between reality and past experience in vertical motions. Physiological tests of the vestibular system, however, have been inconclusive regarding the underlying pathogenesis. Cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs) arise from the saccule, which responds to vertical motion. If vertical motion elicits motion sickness, th
