A previously healthy 6-year-old girl that initially presented with presumed viral gastrointestinal infection for a week and later developed catastrophic primary peritonitis and septic shock requiring resuscitation and emergency exploratory laparotomy without any identifiable intra-abdominal cause of the sepsis and the peritoneal exudates grew group A streptococci. Significance of results of cytologic (CE) and histologic (HE) examinations of the biopsy material, received during diagnostical thoracoscopy for the exudative pleurisy (EP) of nonestablished etiology was studied. There were 69 observations of EP analyzed. Following diagnosis was established: nonspecific, tuberculous, metastatic pleurisy and in pleural mesothelioma. The values of CE and HE characteristics were presented. The complex general value of cytohistologic diagnosis had constituted 94%. Causes of diagnostic mistakes occurrence were considered.

We evaluated the presence and distribution of transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta 1) in breast cyst fluid (BCF), and its relationship with intracystic epidermal growth factor (EGF). EGF and TGF-beta 1 were determined by radioimmunoassay on 47 BCFs (27 of the Na+/K+ < 3 type and 20 of the Na+/K+ > 3 type). Nipple discharge is one of the most common breast complaints in women. Galactorrhea (milky discharge) may occur during pregnancy or breast-feeding or as a result of drug therapy, hypothyroidism, or hyperthyroidism. Nonbloody discharge is most common and is usually benign. Bloody discharge should be considered a sign of cancer until proved otherwise. Persistent galactorrhea and nonbloody discharge can be treated by transecting the mammary ducts. Simple mastectomy may be appropriate in patients with persistent bloody discharge who have a strong family history of breast cancer.

We used ultrasonography to study 26 hips with slipped capital femoral epiphyses. In recently slipped epiphyses the ultrasound image revealed a step at the anterior physeal outline (mean 6.4 mm), diminished distance between the anterior acetabular rim and the femoral metaphysis (mean 4.3 mm) and an effusion.
