Elements of morphology: standard terminology for the periorbital region.

An international group of clinicians working in the field of dysmorphology has initiated the standardization of terms used to describe human morphology. The goals are to standardize these terms and reach consensus regarding their definitions. In this way, we will increase the utility of descriptions of the human phenotype and facilitate reliable comparisons of findings among patients. Discussions with other workers in dysmorphology and related fields, such as developmental biology and molecular genetics, will become more precise. Here we introduce the anatomy of the periorbital area and define

Discoid lupus erythematosus presenting as madarosis.

PURPOSE: Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is an autoimmune disorder that usually affects the sun-exposed skin. Periocular involvement occurs uncommonly and may progress from eyelid erythema to scarring and madarosis. METHODS: Observational case report. RESULT: A case of DLE that presented with madarosis alone in the absence of preceding skin erythema and scarring. CONCLUSION: Our case demonstrates that DLE may present with madarosis alone in the absence of a history of preceding erythema and scarring. Discoid lupus erythematosus should therefore be considered as a differential diagnosis in

Lids, lacrimals, and lashes.

The eyelids and lashes serve to protect the globe from foreign bodies and injuries, and the lacrimal system protects the eyes through lubrication of the corneal and conjunctival surfaces. This article discusses trauma, infection, inflammation, anatomic abnormalities, and tumors that may result in serious complications interfering with normal eye function.

A trial of surgery for trichiasis of the upper lid from trachoma.

Three surgeons operated on upper eye lids of northern Omani villagers for trichiasis due to trachoma using a standardised protocol. The lids were graded as minor trichiasis, five or fewer lashes; major trichiasis, six or more lashes; and lid closure defect. Operative success was defined as no lash/eyeball contact and complete gentle lid closure. One hundred and sixty five lids with major trichiasis were allocated by random number tables to one of five operations: bilamellar tarsal rotation (Ballen), tarsal advance and rotation (modified Trabut), eversion splinting (grey line), tarsal advance (

A benign masquerade of eyelid malignancy: Discoid lupus erythematosus.

A 50-year-old female presented with redness and itching over her right lower eyelid for 6 months. She had a diffusely hyperpigmented lesion with a purplish hue over her right lower eyelid. There was diffuse loss of eyelashes and obliteration of meibomian gland openings along the lesion. The ocular examination was otherwise unremarkable. In view of the clinical features, the possibility of squamous cell carcinoma was considered, and an incisional biopsy was performed. Histopathology was suggestive of discoid lupus erythematosus. The patient was treated with oral hydroxychloroquine sulfate for 6…

Rothmund-Thomson syndrome, a disorder far from solved.

Rothmund-Thomson syndrome (RTS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by a range of clinical symptoms, including poikiloderma, juvenile cataracts, short stature, sparse hair, eyebrows/eyelashes, nail dysplasia, and skeletal abnormalities. While classically associated with mutations in the RECQL4 gene, which encodes a DNA helicase involved in DNA replication and repair, three additional genes have been recently identified in RTS: ANAPC1, encoding a subunit of the APC/C complex; DNA2, which encodes a nuclease/helicase involved in DNA repair; and CRIPT, encoding a poorly characteri…

Congenital atrichia with papular lesions.

Congenital atrichia with papular lesions is a rare, autosomal recessive and irreversible form of total alopecia of the body hair characterized by hair loss soon after birth and the development of keratinfilled cysts or horny papules over extensive areas of the body. The condition is associated with a mutation of the human hairless gene on chromosome region 8p12. We report a 1-year-old boy presenting with the absence of scalp and body hair since birth. On examination, he had complete absence of hair on the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes. Multiple, discrete, pearly-to-skin-colored papules of 1-3…

[Floating-Harbor syndrome: a case report and literature review].

Floating-Harbor syndrome (FHS) is an autosomal dominant genetic disease caused by SRCAP mutation. This article reports the clinical features of a boy with FHS. The boy, aged 11 years and 7 months, attended the hospital due to short stature for more than 8 years and had the clinical manifestations of unusual facial features (triangularly shaped face, thin lips and long eyelashes), skeletal dysplasia (curvature finger), expressive language disorder, and retardation of bone age. Genetic detection revealed a novel heterozygous mutation, c.7330 C>T(p.R2444X), in the SRCAP gene. The boy was diagnose…

Poliosis circumscripta: overview and underlying causes.

Although traditionally known as "white forelock," poliosis circumscripta, defined as a localized patch of white hair in a group of hair follicles, can involve any hairy area on the body including the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes. Microscopically, poliosis demonstrates either decreased or absent melanin and/or melanocytes in the hair bulbs of the affected hair follicles. Classically, poliosis is known to occur in the setting of several genetic syndromes including piebaldism, Waardenburg, and tuberous sclerosis. In addition, poliosis has been described in association with various acquired cond…

Contact blepharoconjunctivitis due to black henna--a case report.

Para-phenylenediamine (PPD) can induce immediate or - more often - delayed hypersensitivity. We report the case of 48-year old female admitted to the out-patient allergy clinic a day after her visit in a beauty parlour, where she had her eyelashes and eyebrows dyed with henna. Physical examination revealed prominent edema of the upper part of the face including forehead, cheeks and eyes causing severe narrowing of the palpebral chink. Skin prick tests (SPT) with common allergens were positive for Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Dermatophagoides farinae and moulds, while the SPT with PPD was ne…

Ocular manifestations in the Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome.

The Hutchinson-Gilford progeria (HGP) syndrome is an extremely rare genetic condition characterized by an appearance of accelerated aging in children. The word progeria is derived from the Greek word progeros meaning 'prematurely old'. It is caused by de novo dominant mutation in the LMNA gene (gene map locus 1q21.2) and characterized by growth retardation and accelerated degenerative changes of the skin, musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems. The most common ocular manifestations are prominent eyes, loss of eyebrows and eyelashes, and lagophthalmos. In the present case some additional oc…
