INTRODUCTION: Recent developments in the field of social cognition have led to a renewed interest in basic and social emotion recognition in early stages of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and FrontoTemporal Dementia (FTD). Despite the growing attention to this issue, only few studies have attempted to investigate emotion recognition using both visual and vocal stimuli. In addition, recent studies have presented conflicting findings regarding the extent of impairment in patients in the early stages of these diseases. The present study aims to investigate emotion understanding (both basic and social e

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the neural bases of perception and the recognition of faces. First of all we consider the concept of functional hemisphere specialization; then we look at the results obtained with regard to the neuroanatomy of processing faces and finally refer to the disorders of recognition of faces in humans. For this we review the clinical evidence obtained from the neuropsychological studies of prosopagnostic patients and the data derived from psychophysiological experiments done using intracranial recordings of nonhuman primates.
DEVELOPMENT: The agreement between the results anal

Recognising familiar people is an important function of the human visual system that supports daily social interactions. In addition to static visual cues (e.g., face shape and texture), biological motion cues such as idiosyncratic facial motion and gait contribute to identity recognition. Surprisingly, recent research has indicated an individuals' eye movements exhibit idiosyncratic patterns that contain identifiable information, though it is largely unknown to what extent human observers exploit this information. The current study measures sensitivity of human observers to idiosyncratic gaze

One account of the characteristic holistic processing of faces and objects of expertise posits that it arises from a learned attention to the whole, rendering it difficult to attend only to parts of stimuli. We tested whether task-context-induced attentional biases for the top or bottom part of a stimulus alter holistic processing of faces. We induced attentional biases by manipulating the probability (75% or 25%) that the top or bottom part would be task-relevant in a modified composite part-judgement task. Manipulating the proportion of trials in which the top/bottom region was task-relevant

Researchers have used eye-tracking measures to explore the relationship between face encoding and recognition, including the impact of ethnicity on this relationship. Previous studies offer a variety of conflicting conclusions. This confusion may stem from misestimation of the relationship between encoding and recognition. First, most previous models fail to account for the structure of eye-tracking data, potentially falling prey to Simpson's paradox. Second, previous models assume a linear relationship between attention (e.g., the number of fixations to a to-be-remembered face) and recognitio

How does attention enhance neural representations of goal-relevant stimuli while suppressing representations of ignored stimuli across regions of the brain? While prior studies have shown that attention enhances visual responses, we lack a cohesive understanding of how selective attention modulates visual representations across the brain. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while participants performed a selective attention task on superimposed stimuli from multiple categories and used a data-driven approach to test how attention affects both decodability of category inf

Faces are processed in a network of areas within regions of the ventral visual stream. However, familiar faces typically are characterized by additional associated information, such as episodic memories or semantic biographical information as well. The acquisition of such non-sensory, identity-specific knowledge plays a crucial role in our ability to recognize and identify someone we know. The occipital face area (OFA), an early part of the core face-processing network, is recently found to be involved in the formation of identity-specific memory traces but it is currently unclear if this role

Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA) is an autosomal recessive disease presenting with ataxia, corticospinal signs, peripheral neuropathy, and cardiac abnormalities. Little effort has been made to understand the psychological and emotional burden of the disease. The aim of our study was to measure patients' ability to recognize emotions using visual and non-verbal auditory hints, and to correlate this ability with psychological, neuropsychological, and neurological variables. We included 20 patients with FRDA, and 20 age, sex, and education matched healthy controls (HC). We measured emotion recognition

This is a case study involving a female patient (NN) with complete loss of autobiographical memory and identity despite normal neurological assessment. To test the hypothesis that patients with dissociative amnesia (DA) possess the ability to covertly process facial identities they are unaware of, we conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and assessed skin conductance responses (SCR) to (a) strangers, (b) celebrities, and (c) familiar faces not seen since the onset of DA. We also performed associative face-name memory tasks to test the patient's ability to learn and recall newl

We measured the effect of the correction of the natural aberrations of the eye by means of adaptive optics on the subject's performance on three different visual tasks: subjective sharpness assessment of natural images, familiar face recognition, and facial expression recognition. Images were presented through a dedicated psychophysical channel and viewed through an electromagnetic deformable mirror. Experiments were performed on 17 normal subjects. Ocular aberrations (astigmatism and higher order aberrations) were reduced on average from 0.366 +/- 0.154 to 0.101 +/- 0.055 mum for a 5-mm pupil

Visual recognition is supported in humans by category-selective neural activity in the ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC). While category-selectivity is generally defined as an increase in neural activity (i.e., larger responses) for a given visual category of interest, category-selective decreases have also been reported yet generally ignored. Here we use electrophysiological intracerebral recordings across the VOTC of a large human sample (N = 140; >11k recording sites) to characterize and compare category-selective neural decreases relative to increases, in response to images of faces.

Individuals with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) exhibit symptoms that affect their responsiveness to negative information. Specifically, hypervigilance heightens attention toward negative stimuli, whereas dissociation diverts attention away from it (Chiba et al., 2021), potentially leading to differential effects on memory encoding. This study investigated the influence of prominent hypervigilant and dissociative symptomatology on the memorization of negative emotional and contextual information in individuals exposed to the November 13, 2015, Paris terrorist attacks. Participants includ

Setting apart the neural properties of familiarity for both self and others' faces helps deepen our understanding of the cognitive, developmental, and theoretical dimensions of social dynamics and human identity. Motivated by this goal, we conducted a multivariate cross-classification EEG experiment where we tested whether individuals represent their own face as similar to other highly familiar faces or code self-faces through different familiarity processes. We compare the representational dynamics for self and other faces in both their current and past versions. Participants were presented h

OBJECTIVE: To investigate longitudinal changes in alexithymia and emotion recognition among adolescents and emerging adults with anorexia nervosa (AN) and whether these domains can independently predict the long-term eating disorder (ED) outcome.
METHOD: Ninety-one female patients with AN (mean age: 16.2; 87.6% restrictive type) were included. Forty-five patients received the Maudsley Model Anorexia Nervosa Treatment (MANTRa) and 46 patients received psychotherapeutic treatment-as-usual (TAU). Alexithymia and facial emotion recognition were assessed at baseline and after 1 year. ED pathology

Viewing the faces of familiar people selectively activates a distributed network of brain regions implicated in both the perceptual and nonperceptual processing of conspecifics. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, we investigate the influence of depth of famous-face processing on this network, comparing a passive incidental face processing to a task that required the extraction of identity and biographic information. We observed that the precuneus, ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), anterior temporal face patch (ATFP), and the amygdala exhibit a selective response

Recognising the identity of voices is a key ingredient of communication. Visual mechanisms support this ability: recognition is better for voices previously learned with their corresponding face (compared to a control condition). This so-called 'face-benefit' is supported by the fusiform face area (FFA), a region sensitive to facial form and identity. Behavioural findings indicate that the face-benefit increases in noisy listening conditions. The neural mechanisms for this increase are unknown. Here, using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined responses in face-sensitive regions w

Previous studies have shown that individuals with developmental prosopagnosia (DP) show specific deficits in face processing. However, the mechanism underlying the deficits remains largely unknown. One hypothesis suggests that DP shares the same mechanism as normal population, though their faces processing is disproportionally impaired. An alternative hypothesis emphasizes a qualitatively different mechanism of DP processing faces. To test these hypotheses, we instructed DP and normal individuals to perceive faces and objects. Instead of calculating accuracy averaging across stimulus items, we

Rapid individuation of conspecifics' faces is ecologically important in the human species, whether the face belongs to a familiar or unfamiliar individual. Here we tested a large group (N = 69) of epileptic patients implanted with intracerebral electrodes throughout the ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC). We used a frequency-tagging visual stimulation paradigm optimized to objectively measure face individuation with direct neural recordings. This enabled providing an extensive map of the significantly larger neural responses to upright than to inverted unfamiliar faces, i.e. reflecting vi

Domain-general theories of autism rest on evidence that the disorder impacts not only social communication skills but also nonsocial functions such as memory. Yet recognition memory deficits have been inconsistently documented, especially for stimuli other than faces and sentences. Here we tested school-age children with high-functioning autism (ASD) and IQ, and age-matched comparison children on a visual long-term memory task involving more than 100 photographs of objects, faces, cats, houses, and abstract stimuli. Children viewed each photograph for 2 s. After a 10-min filled delay, we asses

Adolescents are particularly tuned to social cues, but how does this sensitivity affect their learning? This study examined whether social feedback conveyed through human faces modulates implicit learning of auditory speech patterns. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) was used to assess neural measures of learning in response to auditory linguistic input as participants engaged in a computer-controlled guessing task and received incidental social feedback in the form of smiling (positive) or frowning (negative) faces. The results showed that smiling faces produced neural response patterns consistent
