Abdominal Necrotizing Fasciitis Secondary to Perforated Colon Cancer.

Necrotizing Fasciitis (NF) is a severe, potentially fatal soft tissue infection leading to death of muscles, fascia, and surrounding tissue. Perforated colon cancer (CC) is an exceedingly uncommon cause of NF. Here, we present a case of NF secondary to perforated colon cancer. This case emphasizes the significance of prompt identification, aggressive surgical excision of affected tissue, and consideration of rare, yet potentially fatal underlying etiologies in the management of NF as well as underscores the importance of CC screening to prevent devastating complications and mortality.

Necrotizing Fasciitis after Panniculectomy Caused by Finegoldia magna.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare yet severe complication after body contouring surgery. We present a case of a 54-year-old woman with a complex medical history who developed necrotizing fasciitis 9 days after panniculectomy and epigastric hernia repair. Microbiological examination revealed Finegoldia magna as the causative agent, a rare pathogen in necrotizing fasciitis. Patients undergoing body contouring may be at increased risk of developing necrotizing fasciitis; therefore, increased attention should be paid to this differential diagnosis in case of postoperative signs of infection. This ca

Necrotizing Fasciitis Masquerading as Stroke: A Diagnostic Dilemma.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) poses a diagnostic challenge due to its rarity and similarity in presentation with other critical conditions. We report a case of a 79-year-old male who initially presented with altered mental status and stroke-like symptoms; he was ultimately diagnosed with abdominal wall NF spreading to the lower extremity. Despite a history of cecal mass perforation noted in prior imaging, the patient had been discharged from an outside emergency room on antibiotics, highlighting a missed opportunity for early intervention. Subsequent deterioration led to sepsis, organ failure, an

Periorbital necrotizing fasciitis: clinical perspectives on nine cases.

A multicenter review of Periorbital Necrotizing Fasciitis including nine cases, aged 41 to 82, mostly female, and mainly post-traumatic or idiopathic. Streptococcus pyogenes was the most frequent pathogen. Treatment involved debridement alongside antibiotic therapy in all cases. Two cases experienced toxic shock, with no fatalities. Visual outcomes varied from exenteration to preserved visual acuity with minimal aesthetic impact. Early detection and prompt intervention are paramount due to the significant risks associated with this condition, which may lead to severe complications ranging from

A rare case of fully recovered necrotizing fasciitis.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a severe soft tissue infection caused by bacterial fascia invasion and quick spreading to the muscle and subcutaneous tissues. Treatments of NF should be conducted by extensive debridement and antibiotic therapies. This report presented a 53-year-old woman with diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypothyroid who was referred to our medical center with lower limb pain and significant swelling after mild trauma. The patient was diagnosed with NF due to E. coli. She underwent surgical interventions for debridement and long-term antibiotic therapy. The patient recovered succes

Necrotizing fasciitis - two case reports and literature review.

Introduction: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare, rapidly progressing infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Household Transmission of Group A Streptococcus Necrotizing Fasciitis.

A healthy 40-year-old woman was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis 2 days after her husband's death from the same infectious process. Prompt identification and immediate surgical intervention prevented a similar result in this patient. Additional investigation into both patients' medical records found the inciting organism to be group A streptococcus. Although the exact mechanism of inoculation is unknown, the spread of this infection within a household prompts the question of whether antibiotic prophylaxis should be given among close contacts in future cases of necrotizing fasciitis.

Labio-facial Necrotizing Fasciitis in a Young Patient.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an infection of the deeper tissues that results in progressive destruction of muscle fascia and overlying subcutaneous fat. It has a fast and destructive course. Moreover, it is related to immunosuppression and could be fatal. The aim of this study is to report a clinical case of a young patient, without immunosuppression, who developed NF evolution due to an erroneous diagnosis of abscess at the beginning of the disease. Patient was submitted to broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy and aggressive surgical treatment. Adequate treatment led to a satisfactory evolution

[Fournier's gangrene as special form of necrotizing fasciitis].

Fournier's gangrene is a special form of necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) and can affect the genital, perineal and perianal regions. Although the disease is named after Fournier, it was first documented by Baurienne in 1764. He described it as idiopathic rapidly progressive gangrene in young otherwise healthy men. Nowadays, the disease is more likely to affect older patients, especially those with pre-existing diseases (e.g. diabetes mellitus and peripheral arterial occlusive disease). Although men are still predominantly affected by Fournier's gangrene, by definition it can also affec

Necrotizing fasciitis and the midterm outcomes after survival.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Radical surgical intervention is necessary to save patients' lives in cases of necrotizing fasciitis. This leads to persistent disabilities and most likely to a deteriorated quality of life. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the midterm outcomes after survival of necrotizing fasciitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 69 patients, treated for necrotizing fasciitis between 2003 and 2012. The patients were identified using the International Classification of Diseases (10th Revision) code M 72.6. Of the 50 survivors, 22 patients completed the Short

Necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis caused by Aeromonas hydrophila.

Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila) occasionally causes necrotizing fasciitis (NF) and sepsis in immunocompromised hosts. NF is associated with high mortality. In cases of septic shock due to A. hydrophila, mortality is nearly 100%. Our 47-year-old male patient was diagnosed with NF and septic shock due to A. hydrophila. He had not been exposed to fresh or slightly salty water, which is where the bacterium is typically found, so its origin in this case is unclear. This is the first known case in which the patient was able to be completely cured without amputation. NF was suspected from his se

Negative-pressure Wound Therapy for Periocular Necrotizing Fasciitis.

Periocular necrotizing fasciitis is a rare, but potentially blinding, or even fatal disease. The authors report a case of a 44-year-old man who presented with quiescent bilateral periocular and facial necrotizing fasciitis. The patient was treated with antibiotics and surgical debridement, followed by negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT), until the wound bed was thought to be healthy enough to support bilateral upper eyelid full-thickness skin grafts. NPWT appeared to decrease local edema; speed reperfusion and granulation tissue formation; and served to stabilize the skin grafts against the

First report of monomicrobial Candida parapsilosis necrotizing fasciitis.

Candida parapsilosis is an emerging pathogen worldwide. It commonly causes soft tissue infection; however, to our knowledge there has been no previous report of monomicrobial necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) secondary to C. parapsilosis. We report the first case of NSTI caused by C. parapsilosis in an immunocompromised renal transplant patient, with the diagnosis proven both histologically and microbiologically. Our patient required aggressive surgical intervention and antifungal therapy, with postoperative survival at 90 days.
