Parenting Is an Environmental Predictor of Callous-Unemotional Traits and Aggression: A Monozygotic Twin Differences Study.

OBJECTIVE: Callous-unemotional (CU) traits increase risk for children to develop severe childhood aggression and conduct disorder. CU traits are typically described as highly heritable, and debate continues about whether the parenting environment matters in their etiology. Strong genetically informed designs are needed to test for the presence of environmental links between parenting practices and CU traits. Our objective was to determine whether parental harshness and parental warmth were related to children's aggression or CU traits when accounting for genetically mediated effects. METHOD:

Assessing the Mental Health of Fathers, Other Co-parents, and Partners in the Perinatal Period: Mixed Methods Evidence Synthesis.

Introduction: Five to 10 percentage of fathers experience perinatal depression and 5-15% experience perinatal anxiety, with rates increasing when mothers are also experiencing perinatal mental health disorders. Perinatal mental illness in either parent contributes to adverse child and family outcomes. While there are increasing calls to assess the mental health of both parents, universal services (e.g., maternity) and specialist perinatal mental health services usually focus on the mother (i.e., the gestational parent). The aim of this review was to identify and synthesize evidence on the perf

Trajectories of Marital Satisfaction among Parents of Youth with Spina Bifida.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined marital satisfaction among parents of youth with spina bifida (SB) over an 8-year period and investigated the usefulness of the double ABCX model for understanding factors that predict change in marital satisfaction across child age. METHODS: Data from five time points of a longitudinal investigation of psychosocial outcomes in youth with SB were included. Mothers and fathers of children with SB (aged 8-17) reported on marital satisfaction and components of the double ABCX model. Change in marital satisfaction was examined across child age with components of the

Organophosphorus Pesticide Exposure at 17 Weeks' Gestation and Odds of Offspring Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Diagnosis in the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study.

Prenatal organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) are ubiquitous and have been linked to adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. However, few studies have examined prenatal OPs in relation to diagnosed attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), with only two studies exploring this relationship in a population primarily exposed through diet. In this study, we used a nested case-control study to evaluate prenatal OP exposure and ADHD diagnosis in the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study (MoBa). For births that occurred between 2003 and 2008, ADHD diagnoses were obtained from linkage of M

A cross-cultural assessment of early cross-gender behavior and familial factors in male homosexuality.

The data presented here are based on interviews of nonclinical homosexual and heterosexual males of comparable social backgrounds in four societies: the United States, Guatemala, Brazil, and the Philippines. Responses to two lines of questioning are analyzed--items having to do with early cross-gender behavior and items having to do with familial factors commonly assumed to be conducive to homosexual orientation. Consistent patterns of early cross-gender behaviors are found in the homosexual groups in all four societies. Inconsistent results are found with respect to the items having to do wit

Drinks of the father: father's maximum number of drinks consumed predicts externalizing disorders, substance use, and substance use disorders in preadolescent and adolescent offspring.

BACKGROUND: The maximum number of drinks consumed in 24 hr seems to be an interesting phenotype related to alcoholism. The goal of the present study was to determine in an epidemiologic sample whether this measure of drinking history in fathers predicted externalizing behavioral disorders, substance use, and substance abuse in preadolescent and adolescent offspring and whether any such associations would be independent of paternal alcohol dependence diagnoses. METHODS: Subjects were male and female twins from both age cohorts of the Minnesota Twin Family Study, a population-based longitudinal

[Severe form of juvenile type II glycogenosis in a compound-heterozygous boy (Tyr-292--> Cys/Arg-854-->Stop)].

INTRODUCTION: Type II glycogenosis is a glycogen storage disease inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. This molecular and clinically heterogeneous condition is due to a deficiency in a lysosomal acid 1,4-alpha-glucosidase. OBJECTIVE: To report the clinical, enzymatic and molecular characterization of a mulatto child, born to healthy Dominican mother and Caucasian father, affected by the juvenile phenotype form of type II glycogenosis. CLINICAL CASE: This 16-month-old male presented from 10 months with motor delay, limb-girdle hypotonia, prominence of calves, increased CPK value, mixed m

Factors associated with parental anxiety in elective pediatric surgery.

BACKGROUND: Parental perioperative anxiety is another critical aspect during the challenging times before the child's operation. The primary aim of this study was to examine factors associated with parental anxiety in the preoperative setting. Secondary aims were to compare anxiety levels between parents of surgical and non-surgical pediatric patients and to assess the internal consistency and construct validity of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) scales in this population. METHODS: In this comparative cross-sectional study we included 196 parents. A total of 98 parents from the surgi

Fractured relationships and the potential for abuse of older men.

Elderly men are an understudied population in the area of abuse and neglect. The typical elder abuse or neglect victim is described as a frail woman. The National Elder Abuse Incidence Study shows men to be victims as well and at higher risk than women for abandonment, the most extreme form of neglect. A qualitative study of older widowed men did not specifically explore issues of abuse and neglect, but found several of the men experiencing alienation from one or more of their adult children. This paper explores the dynamics of these "fractured relationships" and finds several patterns that ma

If looks could heal: Child health and paternal investment.

Data from the first two waves of the Fragile Family and Child Wellbeing study indicate that infants who look like their father at birth are healthier one year later. The reason is such father-child resemblance induces a father to spend more time engaged in positive parenting. An extra day (per month) of time-investment by a typical visiting father enhances child health by just over 10% of a standard deviation. This estimate is not biased by the effect of child health on father-involvement or omitted maternal ability, thereby eliminating endogeneity biases that plague existing studies. The resu

Sexual abuse of children. Current concepts.

Acts of pedophilia, rape, and incest are uncomfortable subjects that are underdiagnosed and underreported. Effective management involves a multidisciplinary approach that is difficult to achieve without a special program for sexually abused children. These children deserve all the time, skill, and research that are applied to any other serious and common medical problem. They are now beginning to get this attention.

Caregivers' acceptance of using artesunate suppositories for treating childhood malaria in Papua New Guinea.

Community-based interventions using artemisinin-derived suppositories may potentially reduce malaria-related childhood mortality. However, their sociocultural acceptability is unknown in Papua New Guinea and a formal examination of caregiver's attitudes to rectal administration was needed to inform effective deployment strategies. Caregivers (n = 131) of children with uncomplicated malaria were questioned on their prior experience with, and attitudes to, rectal administration and then offered artesunate suppositories as treatment of their child. The 29% who refused this alternative were furthe

Method effects of the relation between family history of alcoholism and parent reports of offspring impulsive behavior.

There is an extensive, albeit inconsistent, literature on the relation between parental alcoholism and offspring impulsive behavior. The reasons for this inconsistency are likely multiple but it seems probable that method effects due to different methodological approaches might explain some of the inconsistencies. Offspring behavior is typically assessed based on informant reports. However, no specific method has been demonstrated as optimal for analyzing informant reports, and conclusions may differ depending on the method used. The present study compared findings derived from a multi-informa

Early adolescent gateway drug use in sons of fathers with substance use disorders.

This study determined the relevance of preadolescent psychopathology and substance use for predicting early adolescent alcohol and cannabis involvement in boys of fathers with and without substance use disorders (SUD). Fathers of preadolescent boys (ages 10 through 12 years) were recruited to represent families of boys with paternal SUD (High Risk or HR: N = 102) and boys without paternal SUD (Low Average Risk or LAR: n = 166). These boys and a parental informant participated in semistructured diagnostic interviews at baseline and 2-year follow-up assessments (ages 12 through 14 years). Preado
