Preoperative incremental maximum squeeze pressure as a predictor of fecal incontinence after very low anterior resection for low rectal cancer.

PURPOSE: Very low anterior resection (VLAR) is performed widely, but some patients are left with fecal incontinence (FI), which compromises their quality of life (QOL) severely. This study sought to identify the predictive factors of postoperative FI after VLAR, which remain unclear. METHODS: We evaluated the anorectal manometry data of patients who underwent VLAR to identify the risk factors for postoperative FI among the various clinicopathological factors and manometric characteristics. FI and QOL were analyzed using the Wexner score and EORTC QLQ-C30, respectively. RESULTS: The subjects …

Associations between five anthropometric indices and fecal incontinence: A cross-sectional study based on the 2005 to 2010 NHANES data.

Fecal incontinence (FI) is a common condition that impairs quality of life. While the association between general adiposity, measured by body mass index (BMI), and FI is inconsistent, central adiposity may be more relevant. Indices such as the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and novel anthropometric indices, including the Conicity Index (CI), A Body Shape Index (ABSI), and relative fat mass (RFM), aim to better quantify central fat distribution. However, their association with FI is not well characterized. We aimed to comprehensively evaluate and compare the associations of these 5 indices with F…

Ethnic Differences in Anorectal Manometry Findings in Patients With Fecal Incontinence: Results From a Multiethnic Cohort According to the London Classification.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Clinical rates of fecal incontinence (FI) are known to vary based on race and ethnicity. It is unclear if anorectal manometry (ARM) findings in patients with FI differ based on ethnicity. METHODS: High-resolution ARM studies performed between 2014-2021 due to FI at 2 hospitals with multiethnic populations were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Four hundred and seventy-nine subjects were included--87 (18.2%) Arab Israelis, 76 (15.9%) immigrants from the former Soviet Union, and 316 (66.0%) Jewish Israelis. Median age was 67 years old (76.0% women: 90.4% were parous). The Ara…

[The management of urinary and fecal incontinence due to a neurinoma of the cauda equina with an electrode implanted in the pelvic muscles (Caldwell) (author's transl)].

A woman, aged 49, had a complete sensory and motor deficit of the S2-5 segments with urinary and fecal incontinence due to a neurinoma of the cauda. A Caldwell electrode was implanted surgically into the muscles of the pelvic floor in April 1974. The patient was observed for 2 years thereafter and had an excellent result. The medical and technical problems of treating urinary and fecal incontinence due to a lower motor neuron lesion of S2-5 can be handled satisfactorily with an implanted electrode.

Evolution and economic evaluation of fecal incontinence management in United States intensive care units: from historical containment to automated diversion.

Fecal incontinence (FI) poses a significant clinical and economic challenge in the U.S. intensive care units (ICUs), affecting 9-40% of patients and contributing to billions of dollars in healthcare costs mainly towards complications such as incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD), hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPI), and Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI). This review traces the evolution of FI management from rudimentary containment methods to the newest innovative Qoramatic Automated Stool Management (ASM) system with no balloon and zero radial pressure. We compared Qoramatic …
