Foraging dives of southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) in relation to larger zooplankton size prey availability in Golfo Nuevo, Península Valdés, Argentina.

Southern right whales (SRWs, Eubalaena australis) have been observed feeding both at and below the surface (< 10 m) in Golfo Nuevo (42°42' S, 64°30' W), Península Valdés, Argentina, an area traditionally recognized as calving ground. In addition, we documented diving feeding behavior in SRWs during their stay in this gulf, which has not been previously described. We assessed this behavior using suction-cup-attached video-imaging tags (CRITTERCAMs) on individual whales. A total of eight CRITTERCAM deployments were successful, and feeding events were documented in all SRWs successfully equipped …

Host-feeding patterns of Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) in urban and rural contexts within Rome province, Italy.

Knowledge of the frequency of contact between a mosquito species and its different hosts is essential to understand the role of each vector … total Ae. albopictus collected, demonstrates the useful application of sticky-trap in studying the feeding behavior of the species. The human blood index was significantly different among sites, ranging from 79-96% in urban sites to 23-55% in rural sites, where horses and bovines represented the most bitten hosts. The results obtained confirm the plastic feeding …

Time-series analysis of myoelectric cycling of sphincter of Oddi: evidence of cycling during fed state.

The sphincter of Oddi (SO) in the fasted opossum exhibits spontaneous cyclic spikeburst activity that is temporally related to the interdigestive migrating myoelectric complex (MMC) of the small intestine. After feeding, the cyclic activity is apparently disrupted. Our aim was to use time-series analysis to mathematically describe the periodic behavior of the fasted state and to determine whether this periodicity is present after feeding. Five opossums were chronically prepared with bipolar electrodes secured to the SO. With the animals fasted and conscious, myoelectric activity was recorded f

Growth deficits in a postnatal day 3 rat model of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury.

The postnatal day (P) 3 rat model of hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury provides valuable information regarding the cellular response to HI injury in a very immature brain. Our present study is the first to examine growth, metabolic, and behavioral outcomes following a P3 HI brain injury. Rats were injured by cauterizing the right common carotid, and exposure to 8% oxygen for 1.5h. Control rats received sham surgery and exposure to 1.5h of room air. One cohort of rats was examined for growth patterns through P33, evaluated using a battery of tests focused on early postnatal feeding behaviors, …

A critical role for the evolutionarily conserved gonadotropin-releasing hormone II: mediation of energy status and female sexual behavior.

GnRH is an evolutionarily conserved neuropeptide, of which there are multiple structural variants; the function of the most widespread variant, GnRH-II, remains undefined. GnRH-II may affect reproductive behavior; GnRH-II administration to female musk shrews reinstates mating behavior previously inhibited by food restriction. To determine whether this action of GnRH-II is universal, we conducted the following studies in mice. Ovariectomized mice were primed with estradiol benzoate and progesterone once a week and tested for sexual behavior. Females showing a lordosis quotient (LQ) of 50 or hig

Eating Behaviors, Appetite, and Childhood Obesity in Early Childhood: A Qualitative Study of Mothers' Perceptions and Prevention Approaches.

OBJECTIVE: In early childhood, packaged food consumption, screen-based sedentary behavior, and inconsistent parental feeding practices increase the risk of obesity. Mothers play a central role in shaping children's feeding environments. This study explored mothers' perceptions of eating and appetite behaviors in children aged 36 years, their feeding management strategies, and their evaluations of obesity risk within a cultural context. METHODS: A phenomenologically oriented qualitative design within an interpretiveconstructivist paradigm was employed. Fifteen mothers of children aged 36 years

Projections from the dorsomedial division of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis to hypothalamic nuclei in the mouse.

As stressful environment is a potent modulator of feeding, we seek in the present work to decipher the neuroanatomical basis for an interplay between stress and feeding behaviors. For this, we combined anterograde and retrograde tracing with immunohistochemical approaches to investigate the patterns of projections between the dorsomedial division of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), well connected to the amygdala, and hypothalamic structures such as the paraventricular (PVH) and dorsomedial (DMH), the arcuate (ARH) nuclei and the lateral hypothalamic areas (LHA) known to control …

Heritability of behavioral traits and their genetic correlations with carcass traits in beef cattle.

BACKGROUND: Feeding and rumination behaviors in cattle are genetically associated with feed efficiency and growth traits. However, other behavioral traits such as lying, standing, and moving remain less studied. Moreover, the genetic relationships between behavioral traits and carcass traits are poorly understood in beef cattle. This study analyzed seven behavioral classes-feeding, lying, moving, standing, ruminating, ruminating while lying, and ruminating while standing-measured using wearable sensors in 1032 Japanese Black cattle and investigated their genetic correlations with carcass trait

Programming and Setting Up the Object Detection Algorithm YOLO to Determine Feeding Activities of Beef Cattle: A Comparison between YOLOv8m and YOLOv10m.

This study highlights the importance of monitoring cattle feeding behavior using the YOLO algorithm for object detection. Videos of six Charolais bulls were recorded on a French farm, and three feeding behaviors (biting, chewing, visiting) were identified and labeled using Roboflow. YOLOv8 and YOLOv10 were compared for their performance in detecting these behaviors. YOLOv10 outperformed YOLOv8 with slightly higher precision, recall, mAP50, and mAP50-95 scores. Although both algorithms demonstrated similar overall accuracy (around 90%), YOLOv8 reached optimal training faster and exhibited less …

Hay provision affects 24-h performance of normal and abnormal oral behaviors in individually housed dairy calves.

Dairy calves often perform abnormal repetitive behaviors (ARBs) including tongue rolling and nonnutritive oral manipulation (NNOM) when opportunities to perform feeding behaviors are restricted. Many US dairy farms limit access to milk, a well-studied risk factor for ARBs. However, farms also commonly do not feed forage to young calves, and the motor patterns of oral ARBs resemble those necessary for acquiring and chewing solid feed. Our objective was to assess how access to hay from birth influenced time engaged in normal and abnormal oral behaviors across 24 h. Holstein heifer calves were ho…

Validation of the Teruel Orthorexia Scale and relationship to health anxiety in a U.S. sample.

BACKGROUND: Scholarly investigation into orthorexia nervosa is relatively new, leading several scholars to develop new measures to adequately assess the concerns thought to underlie this condition. A promising new measure of orthorexia, the Teruel Orthorexia Scale (TOS), was developed using a Spanish sample. PURPOSE: This study was the first to investigate the psychometric properties of the English version of the TOS in a U.S. SAMPLE: This study also examined the long-hypothesized relationship between orthorexia and health anxiety. METHODS: We used exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to evalu

Brief functional analysis and supplemental feeding for postmeal rumination in children with developmental disabilities.

Rumination is a serious problem demonstrated by some people with developmental disabilities, but previous research has not included a functional analysis and has rarely compared intervention methods during the assessment process. We conducted functional analyses with 2 children who displayed postmeal rumination and subsequently evaluated a supplemental feeding intervention following meals. Results showed that noncontingent food or liquid presentation effectively reduced rumination with both children.

Monitoring In Vivo Neural Activity to Understand Gut-Brain Signaling.

Appropriate food intake requires exquisite coordination between the gut and the brain. Indeed, it has long been known that gastrointestinal signals communicate with the brain to promote or inhibit feeding behavior. Recent advances in the ability to monitor and manipulate neural activity in awake, behaving rodents has facilitated important discoveries about how gut signaling influences neural activity and feeding behavior. This review emphasizes recent studies that have advanced our knowledge of gut-brain signaling and food intake control, with a focus on how gut signaling influences in vivo ne…

Melanocortin receptor-4 mediates the anorectic effect induced by the nucleus tractus solitarius injection of glucagon-like Peptide-2 in fasted rats.

Glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) is secreted from enteroendocrine L-type cells of the gut and also released from preproglucagonergic (PPG) ne … its gastric emptying. In this study, we tested the effects of NTS GLP-2R activation and blockade on feeding behavior and evaluated the endogenous melanocortin system's role in the NTS in mediating effects of GLP-2 on feeding behavior in fed and fasted rats. Our results demonstrated that microinjection of GLP-2 into the NTS suppressed food intake in fasted-refeedin …

Maternal instincts: a review of the role of chemosensory cues and larval habitat conditions on oviposition site choice by gravid Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Aedes aegypti (Ae. aegypti) is a global vector of arboviruses, including those causing dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever. Effective management of Ae. aegypti populations remain challenging due to their anthropophilic feeding behavior, their exploitation of urban environments, their complex oviposition behavior, and their egg physiology. The characteristics of larval habitats can influence various aspects of larval development, thereby altering adult physiology and behavior. These include differences in blood-feeding behavior, reproductive capacity, and lifespan. Gravid females select…

Effectiveness of a comprehensive integrated module using interactive lectures and workshops in understanding and knowledge retention about infant feeding practice in fifth year medical students: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Sixty percent of the 10.9 million under-5 deaths every year are related to malnutrition. More than two thirds of malnutrition is caused by inappropriate infant feeding practice. Only 35 % of mothers worldwide provide 4 months of exclusive breast-feeding, while complementary feeding is often untimely, nutritionally inadequate, hygienically poor, and improperly delivered. The existing pediatric nutrition module in our institution does not include proper delivery of food that involves oral-motor skills and feeding behavior. To scale up the knowledge and skill of medical students regar…

Foraging Under Competition in Mongolian Gerbils: The Influence of Personality and Its Physiological Basis.

Personality can influence animals' competitive foraging behavior. The state-behavior feedback theory suggests that these personality-driven variations may be affected by physiological states. However, the impact of personality on competitive foraging behavior within a species, as well as the physiological states associated with these variations in personality-driven foraging behavior, remains unclear. In this study, we investigated changes in foraging behavior between bold and shy Mongolian gerbils across three distinct contexts: (1) non-competitive foraging contexts, (2) a competition-introdu

CHARGE syndrome: relations between behavioral characteristics and medical conditions.

The behaviors and medical problems in 27 persons with CHARGE syndrome were studied, because it was hypothesized that their behavior might be partly dependent on the heterogeneous medical status. With the exception of more tics, cardiac surgery was associated with positive behaviors: less withdrawn behavior, better mood, and a more easy temperament. Tube feeding was also related to positive behavior, since participants with a history of tube feeding showed less intense behavior. Cerebral deficits were associated with three problem behaviors: more intense and withdrawn behavior and a worse mood.
