AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study was to identify major gastrointestinal complications associated with direct jejunal feeding. We hypothesized that jejunal feeding may cause life-threatening surgical complications in a minority of patients.
METHODS: All patients undergoing jejunal feeding between 1/2008 and 1/2018 at a pediatric surgical unit were identified retrospectively. Data sought from records included demographics, comorbidities, indications, feeding strategies, adverse events, and follow-up. Major surgical complications were defined by Clavien-Dindo grade ≥ IIIb and involving the

BACKGROUND: Adequate nutritional support for patients undergoing major surgery significantly affects postoperative recovery. Data on enteral feeding after liver transplantation (LT) are scarce. The aim of this work was to determine the efficacy and complications of feeding tubes inserted with the use of fluoroscopic assistance, endoscopic assistance, or transperitoneal jejunostomy in patients who underwent LT.
METHODS: From January 2008 to August 2013, 2,058 LTs were performed at Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea. Enteral feeding tubes were inserted in 155 patients (7.5%) after LT: with the u

OBJECTIVE: To compare early versus delayed postoperative feeding in women undergoing major gynaecological surgery with regard to clinical outcomes, duration of postoperative stay, and patient satisfaction.
METHODS: We conducted a parallel-randomized controlled trial at a tertiary care centre in Montreal, Quebec, between June 2000 and July 2001. Patients undergoing major gynaecological surgery were randomized following a 1:1 allocation ratio to receive either early postoperative feeding in which oral clear fluids were begun up to six hours after surgery followed by solid foods as tolerated, or

UNLABELLED: A recent alternative feeding regimen at the progressive feeding (PF) after a pyloromyotomy for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS) is the so-called ad libitum feeding (AL). The aim of this study was to determine if this new feeding regimen has modified the follow-up of postoperative course in HPS.
POPULATION AND METHODS: From January 1998 to December 2003, 97 consecutive neonates have been operated on for HPS in our hospital. This retrospective study was based on the comparison between two groups of patients with different postoperative feeding regimens: group one of 30 neonates w

Breast-feeding is the superior infant feeding method from birth, with research consistently demonstrating its numerous short- and long-term health benefits for both mother and infant. As a global recommendation the WHO advises that mothers should exclusively breast-feed for the first 6-months of life, thus delaying the introduction of solids during this time. Historically, Irish breast-feeding initiation rates have remained strikingly low in comparison with international data and there has been little improvement in breast-feeding duration rates. There is wide geographical variation in terms o

BACKGROUND: STAR (stochastic targeted) is a glycemic control model-based framework for critically ill neonates that has shown benefits in reducing hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. STAR uses a stochastic matrix method to forecast future changes in a patient's insulin sensitivity and then applies this result to a physiological model to select an optimal insulin treatment. Nasogastric aspiration may be used as an indicator to suggest periods of care when enteral feed absorption is compromised, improving the performance of glycemic control. An analysis has been carried out to investigate the effect

BACKGROUND: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, health care systems nationally are adopting innovative strategies to streamline nursing care while optimizing outcomes. Concurrently, registered dietitian nutritionists are seeking opportunities to maximize their professional contribution and underscore their value as part of the interprofessional health care team. Implementing a feeding tube placement program led by registered dietitian nutritionists, rather than nurses, might enhance patient safety and enable dietitians to practice at an expert level while affording nurses more time for other

BACKGROUND: Bedside methods to verify placement of a feeding tube are not accurate for detecting placement within the gastrointestinal tract, increasing risk of pulmonary aspiration. Current guidelines recommend verifying placement every 4 hours, yet the rationale for this recommendation is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To assess spontaneous migration of small-bore feeding tubes in critically ill adults.
METHODS: A prospective, repeated-measures cohort study was performed in 2 intensive care units. An electromagnetic placement device was used to assess distal feeding tube location every 24 hours for 7

BACKGROUND: Poor feeding practices during childhood illnesses significantly contribute to morbidity and mortality in low-and middle-income countries. However, information on such practices in Africa, especially Ethiopia is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to assess feeding practices for sick infant and young child and associated factors among mothers or caregivers of children under 24 months of age attending public health facilities in Jimma City, 2023.
METHODS: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted from May 20 to June 20, 2023, involving 415 participants selected through a

INTRODUCTION: Tube feeding continues to be recommended for nutrition when a patient has dysphagia amid life-limiting illness. Tube feeding is frequently claimed to be a safer alternative to oral feeding. Oral feeding, including careful hand feeding, has emerged as a viable and evidence-based alternative for patients who desire nutrition at the end of life but have trouble swallowing. There is a critical need to determine the best option for a feeding route at the end of life. This novel, pilot, prospective study was conducted to contribute toward that need. This is the first study of its kind.

BACKGROUND: Triatomines are hematophagous insects that play an important role as vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. These insects have adapted to multiple blood-feeding sources that can affect relevant aspects of their life-cycle and interactions, thereby influencing parasitic transmission dynamics. We conducted a characterization of the feeding sources of individuals from the primary circulating triatomine genera in Colombia using amplicon-based next-generation sequencing (NGS).
METHODS: We used 42 triatomines collected in different departments of Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Infancy is an important period for the promotion of healthy eating, diet and weight. However little is known about how best to engage caregivers of infants in healthy eating programs. This is particularly true for caregivers, infants and children from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds who experience greater rates of overweight and obesity yet are more challenging to reach in health programs. Behaviour change interventions targeting parent-infant feeding interactions are more likely to be effective if assumptions about what needs to change for the target behaviours to occu

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is considered in patients with insufficient oral intake who need enteral feeding or therapeutic gastric decompression. PEG tube feeding is generally superior to nasogastric tube feeding in terms of patients' comfort, long-term use, and feeding efficiency. Patient selection for PEG, the proper endoscopic insertion technique, early recognition of complications, and appropriate management are important for patient care. During preparation, adequate management of anticoagulation and antithrombotic agents are important to prevent bleeding, and prophylactic

BACKGROUND: Diarrhea is an important complication in critically ill patients undergoing enteral feeding. The occurrence of diarrhea may lead to systemic and local complications and negatively impacts on nursing workload and patient's wellbeing. An enteral feeding based on blenderized natural food could be beneficial in reducing the risk of diarrhea. No study has compared natural and commercial enteral feedings in critically ill cardiac surgery patients.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the risk of diarrhea occurrence in two cohorts of patients fed a blenderized natural food die
