Chondrosarcoma of the femur in Mazabraud's syndrome: A first case study.

Malignant transformation of fibrous dysplasia (FD) in long bones is rare (less than 1% of cases) and occurs in the form of osteosarcomas. They can occur on FD associated with multiple myxomas, which corresponds to Mazabraud syndrome. To our knowledge, only six cases of FD malignant transformation into osteosarcoma in the context of Mazabraud syndrome have been described. Here, we describe the first case of malignant transformation of femur FD into chondrosarcoma in a 51-year-old female patient. The patient had significant changes in the size and number of myxomas around the femur before the ma

Chondroblastoma of bone: long-term results and functional outcome after intralesional curettage.

We undertook this retrospective study to determine the rate of recurrence and functional outcome after intralesional curettage for chondroblastoma of bone. The factors associated with aggressive behaviour of the tumour were also analysed. We reviewed 53 patients with histologically-proven chondroblastoma who were treated by intralesional curettage in our unit between 1974 and 2000. They were followed up for at least two years to a maximum of 27 years. Seven (13.2%) had a histologically-proven local recurrence. Three underwent a second intralesional curettage and had no further recurrence. Two

Isolated Posterior Malleolus Fracture with Early Symptom Resolution: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is a benign but locally aggressive neoplasm that predominantly affects the epiphyses of long bones. Pelvic involvement is uncommon, and acetabular GCTB presents particular diagnostic and therapeutic challenges because of the complex pelvic anatomy, proximity to neurovascular structures, and critical weight-bearing function of the hip. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 50-year-old female who presented with progressive left hip pain, restricted movements, and inability to bear weight following a trivial fall. Radiographs and cross-sectional imagi

Pancreatic involvement in Erdheim-Chester disease: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare form of non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis characterized by infiltration of lipid-laden foamy macrophages within different tissues. Clinical manifestations of ECD are highly heterogeneous. Bone lesions are found in 80%-95% of patients, while extraosseous lesions usually involve the cardiovascular system, retroperitoneum, central nervous system (CNS), and skin. Pancreatic involvement in ECD has barely been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old female initially presented with menoxenia, diabetes insipidus and diabetes mellitus. 18F-fluorod

From Blocking Shots to Blocking GI Transit, This Professional Basketball Player Does It All: A Case Report on Small Bowel Obstruction.

Small bowel obstructions (SBO) are a commonly encountered diagnosis within emergency departments. Typically, these patients have evident risk factors including, but not limited to, prior abdominal surgery, personal or family history of gastrointestinal disorders, femoral and inguinal hernias, or neoplasm. In this case, we describe an SBO in a female, professional athlete whose swift, severe symptom onset, rapid resolution with conservative treatment, lack of identifiable risk factors, and prompt return to high level competition without recurrence are certainly unique. A female professional bas

Early and mid-term results of endovascular treatment of thoracic aorta diseases: a single-center experience.

We conducted an analysis to assess early and mid-term outcomes of patients after thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for type B thoracic aorta dissection, descending thoracic aneurysm, or traumatic aortic transection. From January 2016 through December 2018, twenty-seven patients (23 male, 4 female, mean age of 57 years) affected by type B dissection (n = 13 [48.2%]), thoracic aneurysm (n = 9 [33.3%]), and post-traumatic aortic isthmus rupture (n = 5 [18.5%]) were treated using TEVAR with and without left subclavian artery revascularization. All procedures were performed in a hybrid op

Hypercalcemic VX-2 carcinoma in rabbits: a clinicopathologic study.

Rabbits receiving intramuscular injections of VX-2 carcinoma cells in biceps femoris muscles developed rapidly progressive neoplastic growths at 14 to 21 days associated with a significant hypercalcemia. The biologic behavior of the VX-2 carcinoma was characterized by local infiltration and metastases to regional lymph nodes and lungs. No metastases to skeletal tissues were evident. Femora from intramuscularly injected rabbits had varying degrees of osteophytosis and lysis evident roentgenographically. Histopathologic evaluation of femoral sections revealed periosteal new bone growth, cortical

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor-induced bilateral osteomalacia femoral neck fractures: a case report.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMT) are rare and distinctive tumors that typically result in paraneoplastic syndrome known as tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO). We report a case of bilateral osteoporotic femoral neck fracture caused by PMT. PMT was surgically resected, followed by sequential treatment of bilateral femoral neck fractures with total hip arthroplasty (THA). A 49-year-old perimenopausal woman experienced consistent bone pain with limb weakness persisting for over 2 years. Initially, she was diagnosed with early osteonecrosis of the femoral head and received nonsurgical treatment.

A laparoscopic radical inguinal lymphadenectomy approach partly preserving great saphenous vein branches can benefit for patients with penile carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Inguinal lymphadenectomy (iLAD) is effective for penile carcinoma treatment, but usually results in many complications. This study aims to clinically evaluate the feasibility and clinical significance of a laparoscopic radical iLAD approach partly preserving great saphenous vein branches for penile carcinoma patients. METHODS: A total of 48 patients with penile cancer who underwent laparoscopic radical iLAD with retention of the great saphenous vein in Henan Cancer Hospital from 2012 Jan to 2020 Dec were included in this study. Sixteen penile carcinoma patients who underwent lapar

Irradiated superficial femoral artery rupture after free flap: a case report and review of the literature.

Radical oncologic resection can result in large soft tissue defects with exposure of underlying vessels. Unless immediately covered with viable soft tissue, these vessels are vulnerable to desiccation from air exposure and mechanical trauma. Local radiation treatment also contributes to a decline in vessel wall strength. We present an index case of a patient with prolonged exposure of her femoral bone and superficial femoral artery after an initial failed reconstruction of a soft tissue sarcoma resection defect. We provided coverage using a free latissimus dorsi muscle flap. Two weeks after th

Coccidiomycosis infection of the patella mimicking a neoplasm - two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Coccidioidomycosis is an endemic fungal infection in the southwestern of United States. Most infections are asymptomatic or manifest with mild respiratory complaints. Rare cases may cause extrapulmonary or disseminated disease. We report two cases of knee involvement that presented as isolated lytic lesions of the patella mimicking neoplasms. CASE PRESENTATION: The first case, a 27 year-old immunocompetent male had progressive left anterior knee pain for four months. The second case was a 78 year-old male had left anterior knee pain for three months. Both of them had visited gener

[Management of complications following resection and defect reconstruction of tumors near the hip joint].

BACKGROUND: Tumorous destruction of the periacetabular region and the proximal femur are a consequence of either primary malignant bone tumor manifestation or metastatic disease, which is observed much more frequently and occurs typically in these skeletal segments. Pathological fractures of the proximal femur and periacetabular regions of the pelvis have a high incidence and ultimately lead to severe pain and immobilization. TREATMENT METHODS: Advanced resection techniques and different types of defect reconstruction, allowing for oncologically sufficient resection of extensive tumors have c

Complete femoral nerve resection with soft tissue sarcoma: functional outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The functional consequences of resecting the femoral nerve in conjunction with soft tissue sarcoma management are not well described. In comparison, sciatic nerve involvement by sarcoma was once considered an indication for amputation, but sciatic resection is now commonly performed as part of a limb-salvage approach. We compared functional outcomes following resection of either the femoral or sciatic nerve in patients with soft tissue sarcoma. We also compared both groups with patients with large thigh sarcomas without nerve involvement. METHODS: The prospectively collected datab

Three different stages of bone stress reactions of long bones in one patient: case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: The similar clinical and radiological early course of stress fractures and bone tumors can lead to diagnostic misinterpretation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A patient is presented who was admitted to our clinic with the diagnosis of similar bone tumors in the distal femur and the proximal tibia. We found an additional localization with high bone turnover in the contralateral proximal tibia; including this lesion, the patient presented with three different types of stress reaction of bone. The final diagnostic decision-making was based on MRI and bone scintigraphy as well as the consi

The experience and expression of pain in Alzheimer patients.

OBJECTIVES: to establish whether there is a sub-group of patients suffering from senile dementia, Alzheimer-type (SDAT), who have ceased to undergo normal experience of pain. METHODS: two single case studies are briefly described and a small-scale national survey by questionnaire is reported. RESULTS: combining the original two cases with those garnered from the survey yielded 49 cases of SDAT patients who failed to exhibit normal experience of pain. In none of the cases does there seem to have been any particular problem of emotional expression or of verbal communication, but pain reactions

Hyperplastic callus formation in both femurs in osteogenesis imperfecta.

A 3-year-old boy with osteogenesis imperfecta had hyperplastic callus formation in the right femur, without preceding trauma or fracture. Radiologically, this bony mass in the femoral shaft mimicked osteosarcoma. Open biopsy showed that it was benign and suggested hyperplastic callus formation. Seven months after the biopsy, the hyperplastic callus had practically vanished. A similar process developed in the left femur 1 year later, also without fracture.
