The price of care: alcohol misuse as a moderator of financial hardship and mental health outcomes of U.S. women caregivers.

PURPOSE: Financial hardship and alcohol misuse are well-established predictors of caregiver mental health. The purpose of this study was to examine if alcohol misuse influenced the associations between financial hardship and mental health outcomes (depression diagnosis and poor mental health days). METHODS: A retrospective data analysis was conducted from 4,212 U.S. women caregivers utilizing 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System dataset.  RESULTS: Alcohol misuse when measured dichotomously was not independently associated with depression diagnosis or poor mental health days. However

Financial distress among women with advanced or metastatic breast cancer in Germany: secondary analysis of prospective ePROCOM data of a two-center cohort.

KEY MESSAGE: In this study, half of all female patients with advanced and metastatic breast cancer reported experiencing financial difficulties. This highlights the need for gynecology and oncology specialists to also address patients' socio-medical needs. Electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePRO) must be used to identify such areas of concern. PURPOSE: The aim was to investigate whether and to what extent female patients with advanced or metastatic breast cancer who are undergoing chemotherapy report financial difficulties due to their physical condition and/or the effects of medical treat

Financial Toxicity Among Patients with Peripheral Artery Disease.

BACKGROUND: Financial toxicity (FT) describes the objective and subjective financial hardships incurred by patients in paying for health care. While peripheral artery disease (PAD) is known to be associated with high total costs and out-of-pocket (OOP) spending, the impact of these costs on patients is poorly described. The objectives of this study were (1) to examine the rates of subjective and objective FT in patients with and without PAD, and (2) to describe other factors that may contribute to FT in this cohort. METHODS: Individuals older than 40 years were identified from the Agency for

Cancer in the context of aging: Health characteristics, function and caregiving needs prior to a new cancer diagnosis in a national sample of older adults.

INTRODUCTION: As cancer trajectories change due to screening, earlier diagnoses, living longer with illnesses, and new successful treatments, cancer is increasingly a disease of older adults. While cancer diagnoses themselves are very stressful for patients and families, little is known about the health status, functional limitations, and social resources of older patients before they face a new cancer diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), a national survey of older Medicare beneficiaries linked to Medicare claims data, we examined the hea

Do any kinds of perceived stressors lead to hypertension? A longitudinal cohort study.

Stress has been suggested as a contributing factor in the etiology and progression of hypertension in prior investigations. For a more comprehensive understanding of this concept, in this study, we aim to evaluate different domains of perceived stress and their possible contribution to the development of hypertension (HTN). This is a secondary analysis of the Isfahan Cohort Study (ICS). We used data from 2007 and 2013. The 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and Stressful Life Events Questionnaire (SLEQ) were used to evaluate psychological distress and perceived stress in subjects, a

Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria with Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

In this study, we are describing a female patient with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. Both diseases are known to cause hemolytic anemia that mediates the hemolysis of RBCs through several mechanisms. In PNH the hemolysis is mediated through complement activation and oxidative stress. G6PD enzyme is crucial in preventing damage to cellular structures caused by oxygen-free radicles. In G6PD deficiency the hemolysis is mediated through the oxidative stress created by oxygen-free radicles. Since both diseases mediate hemolysis thr

Stress Proliferation or Stress Relief? Understanding Mothers' Health during Son's Incarceration.

Social stressors proliferate to impair the health of those connected to the person enduring the stressor, but they can simultaneously offer relief from other stressors. Using in-depth interviews with 69 mothers of incarcerated men, we investigate mothers' descriptions of how the stressor of their adult son's incarceration impairs their health. First, mothers overwhelmingly describe how the increased instrumental, emotional, and financial responsibilities following their son's confinement damage their health. Second, despite these increased responsibilities, most mothers simultaneously describe
