Non-ossifying fibroma of the mandible in a 4-year-old child: A rare case and review of the literature.

Non-ossifying fibromas usually occur in the metaphysis of the long bones in children, and are extremely rare in the mandible. Here, we present a case of non-ossifying fibromas which occurred in the mandible of a 4-year-old boy. The patient had no complaint of ache. Laboratory blood examination of serum calcium, phosphorus, and parathormone levels was normal. Computed tomography of the maxillofacial region showed a well-defined osteolytic lesion affecting the right mandible. Microscopically, the lesion showed whorled bundles of spindle-shaped fibroblasts, as well as foam cells, mingled with sca…

Is microRNA-33 an Appropriate Target in the Treatment of Atherosclerosis?

The maintenance of cholesterol homeostasis is a complicated process involving regulation of cholesterol synthesis, dietary uptake and bile acid synthesis and excretion. Reverse cholesterol transport, described as the transfer of cholesterol from non-hepatic cells, including foam cells in atherosclerotic plaques, to the liver and then its excretion in the feces is important part of this regulation. High-density lipoproteins are the key mediators of reverse cholesterol transport. On the other hand, microRNA-33 was identified as a key regulator of cholesterol homeostasis. Recent studies indicate …

Ulnar nerve sonography in leprosy neuropathy.

A 23-year-old woman presented with a half-year history of right forearm sensory and motor dysfunction. Ultrasound imaging revealed definite … cytes and a plurality of epithelioid cells in the fibrous connective tissues, with visible atypical foam cells and proliferous vascularization, consistent with leprosy. Our report will familiarize readers with the characteristic sonographic features of the ulnar nerve in leprosy, particularly because of the decreasing incidence of leprosy in recent years.

The Scavenger Receptor CD68 Regulates Platelet Mediated Oxidized Low-Density Lipoprotein (oxLDL) Deposition in Atherosclerotic Vessels at an Early Stage of Atherosclerosis in LDLR-/-/ApoBec-/- Mice.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Oxidative modifications of low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) play a key role in initial steps of atheroprogression possibly via specific scavenger receptors on inflammatory and endothelial cells. Amongst others, CD68 might play a crucial role in this leading to fatty streak formation. METHODS: Different CD68-Fc fusion proteins were cloned, expressed and tested in vitro for their oxLDL binding properties as a decoy for endogenous oxLDL. Physiological functions were tested in foam cell assays with human monocytes in culture and by binding oxLDL from human blood. The best suited

Pseudo-Gaucher cell proliferation associated with myelodysplastic syndrome.

We report an extremely rare case of pseudo-Gaucher cell proliferation with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). A 77-year old Japanese man was referred to our hospital with splenomegaly and thrombocytopenia, and subsequent bone marrow aspiration revealed infiltrates of foamy vacuolated macrophages without any evidence of other morphologic abnormalities. A karyotype analysis showed the presence of 46,XY,del(20)(q11) in 20 of 20 examined bone marrow cells. We performed a splenectomy, and the resulting pathologic findings revealed massive infiltration of foamy vacuolated macrophages, which were morpho

The pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.

Worldwide, more people die of the complications of atherosclerosis than of any other cause. It is not surprising, therefore, that enormous resources have been devoted to studying the pathogenesis of this condition. This article attempts to summarize present knowledge on the events that take place within the arterial wall during atherogenesis. Classical risk factors are not dealt with as they are the subjects of other parts of this book. First, we deal with the role of endothelial dysfunction and infection in initiating the atherosclerotic lesion. Then we describe the development of the lesion

Müllerian adenosarcoma with ovarian sex cord-like differentiation. A light- and electron-microscopic study.

A Müllerian adenosarcoma in which the sarcomatous element showed ovarian sex-cord like differentiation, occurred as a polypoid growth in the uterine cervix of a 53-year-old woman. The tumor was composed of an admixture of benign neoplastic glands and a sarcomatous stroma, the latter containing in addition to endometrial stromal sarcoma, nests of lipid-rich cells resembling ovarian sex-cord elements. This is the first report of such differentiation in Müllerian adenosarcoma. Origin from a focus of cervical endometriosis is postulated.

Notably, HSP-Ia facilitated lipid efflux in foam cells in a dose-dependent manner, associated with the upregulation of Liver X receptor α/ATP-binding cassette transporter signaling pathway. Overall, these findings enhance the current knowledge of the structural features of hemp seed-derived polysacchari …

APOE-mediated lipid transport prevents C1q-related synaptic loss after spinal cord injury via attenuating macrophage lipid stress.

Following spinal cord injury (SCI), neuroinflammation driven by lipid-laden macrophage foam cells is a key pathology, yet how these cells manage their lipid homeostasis is unclear. We delineate a neuroprotective axis in which macrophages deploy apolipoprotein E (APOE) to transfer intracellular lipids to neighboring cells, especially fibroblasts. Genetic ablation of Apoe disrupts this intercellular lipid transport, culminating in pathological lipid retention that activates the Hippo signalling cascade and transcriptionally induces complement component C1q. This excess C1q aberrantly tags intact…

Active foam dynamics of tissue spheroid fusion.

Tissue spheroids fuse to form larger tissue structures, a process controlled by their living material properties. However, how these properties emerge from the active behavior of individual cells is not well understood. Here, we studied fusion dynamics of spheroids from human periosteum-derived cells. Using confocal microscopy, we measured spheroid granularity and, with two-photon microscopy, we quantified active cell movements during fusion. Inhibiting cytoskeletal contractility with Y-27632 Rho kinase inhibitor produced more granular tissues with fewer cell rearrangements but faster fusion.

Intraarticular Nodular Fasciitis of the Elbow Confirmed by UPS6::MYH9 Gene Fusion.

Nodular fasciitis is a benign, usually self-limiting myofibroblastic proliferation with a predilection for the upper extremities, trunk, and … composed solely of proliferating bland spindle cells with osteoclast-like giant cells and scattered foam cells. There was only a focal area of immature granulation-like myxoid change, which suggested nodular fasciitis. Molecular analysis using next-generation sequencing revealed gene rearrangement involving USP6 and MYH9, supporting the diagnosis of nodular …

Research Progress on the Pathogenesis and Treatment of Neoatherosclerosis.

Neoatherosclerosis (NA) within stents has become an important clinical problem after coronary artery stent implantation. In-stent restenosis and in-stent thrombosis are the two major complications following coronary stent placement and seriously affect patient prognosis. As the common pathological basis of these two complications, NA plaques, unlike native atherosclerotic plaques, often grow around residual oxidized lipids and stent struts. The main components are foam cells formed by vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) engulfing oxidized lipids at lipid residue sites. Current research mainly…

Sternoclavicular xanthogranulomatous osteomyelitis in a patient after kidney transplantation: a case report.

Xanthogranulomatous osteomyelitis (XO) is a rare chronic inflammatory bone disease characterized by the presence of cholesterol-laden foam macrophages, histiocytes, and plasma cells. We report the case of a 41-year-old man with end-stage renal disease who had undergone deceased donor kidney transplantation 4 years earlier. He presented with a chest wall mass that he had first identified 2 weeks prior to admission. Computed tomography revealed a periosseous heterogeneously enhancing soft tissue mass adjacent to the sternal end of the left clavicle, accompanied by irregular and destructive osteo

The Role of Halogenative Stress in Atherogenic Modification of Low-Density Lipoproteins.

This review discusses formation of reactive halogen species (RHS) catalyzed by myeloperoxidase (MPO), an enzyme mostly present in leukocytes … hich causes accumulation of cholesterol and its esters in these cells and their transformation into foam cells, the basis of atherosclerotic plaques. The review describes the biomarkers of MPO enzymatic activity and halogenative stress, as well as the involvement of the latter in the development of atherosclerosis.

Insight into verruciform xanthoma with oral submucous fibrosis: Case report and review of literature.

Verruciform xanthoma (VX) is a rare benign mucocutaneous verrucopapillary lesion, which mainly involves masticatory mucosa and gingiva. Clinically, it presents as a solitary, sessile or pedunculated, white- or yellow-white-colored growth with a pebbled surface, hence often misdiagnosed as papilloma. The hallmark of histological diagnosis is the presence of foam cells or xanthoma cells confined to the connective tissue papillae. We present a case of VX on the maxillary gingiva in a 52-year-old male patient with oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) with a review on histopathology and concomitant oral l…

Pressure Sensor System for Customized Scoliosis Braces.

Hard-shell thoracolumbar sacral orthoses (TLSOs) are used for treating idiopathic scoliosis, a deformation of the spine with a sideways curvature. The pressure required inside the TLSO for ideal corrective results remains unclear. Retrofitting TLSOs with commercially available pressure measurement systems is expensive and can only be performed in a laboratory. The aim of this study was to develop a cost-effective but accurate pressure sensor system for TLSOs. The sensor was built from a piezoresistive polymer, placed between two closed-cell foam liners, and evaluated with a material testing ma
