Association between plasma homocysteine, vitamin B12, and folic acid levels with thrombotic diseases in Syrian patients.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between plasma homocysteine, vitamin B12, and folic acid in Syrian patients with thrombotic diseases. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study on patients with hyperhomocysteinemia associated with a thrombotic disease at the National University Hospital of Damascus, Syria, comprising 133 thrombosis patients (84 males, 49 females; aged 20-80 years) and 39 matched healthy controls. Vitamin B12 and folic acid profiles were analyzed, and homocysteine ≥15 μmol/l was considered as hyperhomocysteinemia. RESULTS: Patients with thrombosis

[History of the therapy of pernicious anemia].

Increased blood cell regeneration in exsanguinated experimental animals treated either with liver or with aqueous liver extracts was reported by Whipple and by Jeney and Jobling, respectively. These findings stimulated Minot and Murphy to provide evidence for the efficacy of liver against anaemia in clinical studies. After oral administration of liver (45-50 g per day) for 45 patients with anaemia perniciosa improvement of the hematological status was demonstrated. Consequently, for proving the therapeutic value of liver therapy Whipple, Minot and Murphy received Nobel price in 1934. The isola

C5a receptor signaling prevents folate deficiency-induced neural tube defects in mice.

The complement system is involved in a range of diverse developmental processes, including cell survival, growth, differentiation, and regeneration. However, little is known about the role of complement in embryogenesis. In this study, we demonstrate a novel role for the canonical complement 5a receptor (C5aR) in the development of the mammalian neural tube under conditions of maternal dietary folic acid deficiency. Specifically, we found C5aR and C5 to be expressed throughout the period of neurulation in wild-type mice and localized the expression to the cephalic regions of the developing neu…

Evaluation of the vitamin status in pregnancy. Circulating blood levels and enzyme activation in a group of Dutch parturient women and their full term newborns.

Blood levels of vitamin B1, B2, B6, B12 and folic acid were measured in a group of 37 Dutch parturient women and their full term newborns. For the evaluation of the vitamin B1, B2 and B6 status also transketolase-, glutathion reductase- and transaminase activities with their respective activation ratios were measured. In the circulation of the newborn blood levels and enzyme activities were found 1.5-2.0 times higher compared with those of the mother. Interpretation of the data obtained from the mothers using criteria coming from a group of healthy adult blood donors, revealed a relatively hig

Impact of Vitamin B12, Folate and Homocysteine in Modulating Cognitive Functions and the Brain's White Matter Hyperintensity in Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Deficiency of vitamin B12 and folate as surrogate factors attributed to cognitive deterioration among older adults with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Increased homocysteine levels >15 µmol/L (hyperhomocysteinaemia) due to insufficiency of vitamin B12 contribute to damage to the small blood vessels in the brain and aggravate the white matter lesion. PURPOSE: The study aimed to determine the impact of B12, folic acid and homocysteine in modulating cognitive functions and white matter hyperintensity in AD. METHODS: A case-control study of a total number of 82 patients (41 AD patients an

Phospholipid and menthol based nanovesicle impregnated transdermal patch for nutraceutical delivery to diminish folate and iron deficiency.

Adequate micronutrient availability is particularly important in women, children and infants. Micronutrient deficiencies are the major cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity. To overcome this, WHO recommends the use of folic acid and iron supplements for reducing anaemia and improving the health of the mother and infants. Oral intake of supplements for nutritional deficiencies are associated with gastric irritation, nausea, constipation and non-patient compliance due to associated taste. In case of absorption deficiency nutrients administered orally pass-through digestive tract unabsorbed. I

[Public health control of hyperhomocysteinemia and its consequences].

The etiological role of hyperhomocysteinemia in the origin of neural-tube defects was proved, therefore a mandatory flour folic acid fortification program was introduced in the USA since January 1, 1998. In Hungary one kind of breads was fortified with folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6. The Hungarian randomised controlled trials of periconceptional folic acid containing micronutrient-combination supplementation also indicated a reduction in the occurrence of congenital cardiovascular malformations, urinary tract's defects and congenital limb deficiencies and these findings were confirmed

Folate-Containing Fermented Foods of Plant and Animal Origin: The Value of Traditional Foods to Tackle Folate Deficiency.

Folate is a vital micronutrient involved in many essential biosynthetic pathways in the human body. Increased requirements during pregnancy make folate deficiency a global health concern. Supplemental folic acid prescribed to prevent/correct the deficiency has its limitations, making dietary folate superior to supplementation. This review provides a comprehensive overview of traditional fermented foods worldwide, their folate concentrations, microbial strains, and potential to improve folate status in animal models. Relevant studies investigating the folate content in fermented foods were iden

Vitamin B12, folic acid, and the nervous system.

There are many reasons for reviewing the neurology of vitamin-B12 and folic-acid deficiencies together, including the intimate relation between the metabolism of the two vitamins, their morphologically indistinguishable megaloblastic anaemias, and their overlapping neuropsychiatric syndromes and neuropathology, including their related inborn errors of metabolism. Folates and vitamin B12 have fundamental roles in CNS function at all ages, especially the methionine-synthase mediated conversion of homocysteine to methionine, which is essential for nucleotide synthesis and genomic and non-genomic

Folic acid supplementation rescues bladder injury in fetal rats with myelomeningocele.

BACKGROUND: Bladder dysfunction has been linked to the progression of renal failure in children with neurogenic bladder (NB) dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to determine whether bladder injuries in fetal rats with myelomeningocele (MMC) may be treated with folic acid. METHODS: Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups. On the 10th day of gestation, pregnant rats were intragastrically injected with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) (60 mg/kg) to induce MMC fetal rats. The same amount of olive oil was put into the control group to create normal fetal rats. The
