BACKGROUND: Even after a thorough examination it can be difficult to distinguish a normal penile anatomical variant from pathology needing treatment.
OBJECTIVE: This article aims to assist diagnosis by outlining a series of common penile anatomical variants and comparing them to common pathological conditions.
DISCUSSION: The problems considered include pearly penile papules, penile sebaceous glands (Fordyce spots), Tyson glands, angiokeratomas of the scrotum, lymphocoele, penile warts, molluscum contagiosum, folliculitis and scabies.

In clinical studies with a new oral antibiotic, lincomycin, excellent results were obtained in the treatment of carbuncles, furuncles, folliculitis, cellulitis, lymphangitis, lymphadenitis, pyonychias and dermatitis infectiosa eczematoides due to coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus and to Streptococcus hemolyticus Type A. Encouraging results were noted in a small series of acne conglobata (cystic acne). Loose stools and diarrhea were frequently encountered but these symptoms abated when the dosage was reduced.

Lupus miliaris disseminatus faciei (LMDF) is a rare, inflammatory condition, which is characterized by red-brown and yellow-brown papules on the face, with characteristic involvement of the eyelids and with histopathologic findings of suppurative and granulomatous folliculitis and dermatitis. The etiology of this disease is not known, but retinoids, anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, and antimicrobial medications are utilized to treat the condition with variable results. We present the case of a patient with LMDF that has thus far been refractory to treatment.

Adult capillary haemangiomas of the eyelid are rare, with only a few cases reported in the literature. We report the case of a late adolescent girl with an acquired capillary haemangioma of the right upper eyelid preseptal region. The differential diagnoses considered were folliculitis and pyogenic granuloma, but the histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of capillary haemangioma. At the end of 10 months, the patient has not yet reported any recurrence and has no cosmetic complaints.

Bacterial skin infections represent a significant health care burden. Cellulitis and erysipelas are rapidly spreading, painful, superficial skin infections, usually caused by streptococci or Staphylococcus aureus. In this chapter, we will discuss the most common alopecias due to drugs and other skin and systemic disorders. The following hair disorders will be analyzed: telogen effluvium (acute and chronic); anagen effluvium; folliculotropic mycosis fungoides; and folliculitis due to bacteria, fungi, parasites, human immunodeficiency virus disease, lupus erythematosus, and sarcoidosis. We will cover topics including the epidemiology, etiology, clinical picture, and diagnosis of and current treatments for each disease.

We report a 53-year-old farmer who developed subcutaneous and cerebral masses 24 years after penetrating trauma during a tropic storm. Computed tomography scans, magnetic resonance imaging and histopathology disclosed actinomycetoma, a disease that rarely develops after trauma and is only occasionally seen with intracranial manifestation. Clinically, the cutaneous manifestation resembled acne keloidalis nuchae or dissecting folliculitis of the scalp. He was treated by neurosurgery and antibiosis.

Ultraviolet-based therapy has been used to treat various pruritic conditions including pruritus in chronic renal failure, atopic dermatitis, HIV, aquagenic pruritus and urticaria, solar, chronic, and idiopathic urticaria, urticaria pigmentosa, polycythemia vera, pruritic folliculitis of pregnancy, breast carcinoma skin infiltration, Hodgkin's lymphoma, chronic liver disease, and acquired perforating dermatosis, among others. Various mechanisms of action for phototherapy have been posited. Treatment limitations, side effects, and common dosing protocols are reviewed.

The human and animal pathogenic yeast genus Malassezia has received considerable attention in recent years from dermatologists, other clinicians, veterinarians and mycologists. Some points highlighted in this review include recent advances in the technological developments related to detection, identification, and classification of Malassezia species. The clinical association of Malassezia species with a number of mammalian dermatological diseases including dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis, pityriasis versicolor, psoriasis, folliculitis and otitis is also discussed.

A 22-year old female suffering from recurrent oral ulcers, genital ulcers, erythema nodosum, and folliculitis, was diagnosed as having Behcet's disease (BD). She has also hypopigmentation of skin and hair, and optic changes associated with albinism including hypopigmentation of the retina, nystagmus, strabismus, and reduced visual acuity. In this report, we discuss the possibility of precipitating factor in BD that the hypersensitivity, mental stress, and drug resistance which is caused by albinism.

Lithium is frequently used in the management of several psychiatric disorders including acute mania, bipolar (manic-depressive) disorder, and recurrent depression. We describe a patient in whom hidradenitis suppurativa developed while the patient was receiving lithium. The cutaneous side effects of lithium are reviewed. The most frequent are psoriasis, acneiform lesions, folliculitis, alopecia, and a maculopapular/macular eruption. Many of these side effects respond less readily to conventional therapy while the patient is receiving lithium.

An otherwise healthy 47-year-old woman presented with confluent pustular lesions on the scalp for 5 months and asymptomatic pustular lesions on the trunk and extremities for 2 weeks. She did not have systemic clinical manifestations and was treated with oral antifungals and antibiotics (amoxicillin, and clavulanic acid and flucloxacillin), with no effect.
