Food insecurity and symptoms of anxiety and depression among Latinas at risk for type 2 diabetes: disaggregating between- and within-person associations using a micro-longitudinal design.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity (FI), depression and anxiety are known risk factors for type 2 diabetes. FI can be transient, but short-term relationships between FI and symptoms of depression and anxiety are not described. PURPOSE: We used a micro-longitudinal design to investigate the between- and within-person relationships between FI and symptoms of depression and anxiety. METHODS: Participants were n = 76 Latinas living in Hartford, CT, United States, who had high risk for type 2 diabetes, utilized SNAP benefits and screened positive for FI. Recruitment and data collection were from April 2…

Long-term consequences of food insecurity among Ebola virus disease-affected households after the 2013-2016 epidemic in rural communities of Kono District, Sierra Leone: A qualitative study.

The 2013-2016 Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic caused food insecurity during and immediately following local outbreaks in Sierra Leone, but longer-term effects are less well described, particularly among households with no EVD survivors. We conducted a qualitative sub-study in July 2018 in Kono District, Sierra Leone to understand the impact of food insecurity on EVD-affected households. Using data from a community-based cohort, we compiled a list of all households, within the sampled communities in Kono District, that had at least one EVD case during the epidemic. We used purposive sampling…

Characteristics of supermarket-based interventions to improve the dietary quality and environmental sustainability of diets in people living with obesity, overweight, and/or food insecurity in high-income countries: a scoping review.

Food insecurity (FI), defined as unreliable access to healthy, nutritious food, is a major health concern in higher-income countries, primarily due to its association with an increased risk of obesity. Supermarket-based interventions may influence population-level food purchasing behaviour, an antecedent to consumption. It is unclear whether there are specific characteristics that these interventions should employ to resonate with vulnerable groups. This scoping review aimed to explore the characteristics of supermarket-based interventions that sought to support healthier and/or more environme…
