BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The frequency, risk factors as well as the sites of biliary stent migration are variable in the literature. This retrospective study investigated the frequency of biliary stent migration, why biliary stents migrated, how the migrated stents affected the patients, and what are the different techniques retrieved the migrated stents.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Out of 876 stented patients, 74 patients (8.4%) had their stents migrated. Patients with and without migrated stents were compared regarding endoscopy and stent-related parameters. The sequels of stent migrations were re

We present the case of a 43-year-old female who underwent cholecystectomy with choledochotomy and laparoscopic lithoextraction for choledocholithiasis, who came to the emergency room due to abdominal pain of 3 days' evolution. An abdominal CT scan showed a possible cholangitis with a liver abscess at the level of segment VI, with metal density material near to the lesion. The inflammatory process extended to the right iliac psoas.

We present a case report of K-wire migration in a 64-year-old woman 28 years after insertion in the right pelvic bone. Two K-wires migrated to the contralateral side of the abdomen and right gluteus maximus, respectively. The K-wires were removed without complications. This case confirms the unpredictability of retained K-wires. The migration of the K-wires may have been triggered by recent cemented cuprevision. To our knowledge, K-wire migration in relation to aseptic loosening after cuprevision has not previously been reported in the literature.

BACKGROUND: The indwelling pleural catheter (IPC), which was initially introduced for the management of recurrent malignant effusions, could be a valuable management option for recurrent benign pleural effusion (BPE), replacing chemical pleurodesis. The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficacy and safety of IPC use in the management of refractory nonmalignant effusions.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the published literature. Retrospective cohort studies, case series, and reports that used IPCs for the management of pleural effusion were included in the

INTRODUCTION: Projectile embolization to the cerebral vasculature and is almost exclusively seen in the anterior circulation due to the greater diameter and flow of the internal carotid arteries. In children, this phenomenon is ever rarer.
METHODS: We present a case of a 9-year-old boy who suffered from a shotgun blast to the thorax and abdomen. He was subsequently found to have a pellet that had presumably traveled from either the left ventricle or directly via the subclavian artery to the vertebrobasilar system to become lodged in the P3 segment of his posterior cerebral artery.
RESULTS: T

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine contraceptive device is the most common method of reversible contraception in women. The intrauterine contraceptive device can perforate the uterus and can also migrate into pelvic or abdominal organs. Perforation of the urinary bladder by an intrauterine contraceptive device is not common. In West Africa, intravesical migration of an intrauterine contraceptive device has been rarely reported. In this report, we present a case of an intrauterine contraceptive device migration into the urinary bladder of a 33 year old African woman at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital,

INTRODUCTION: Implantation of a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt is a standard procedure for hydrocephalus. Different complications can occur, one of them being migration of the distal end of the tube.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The abdominal end of a VP shunt tube had migrated into the descending colon. In a laparoscopic procedure, the shunt was retrieved, and the colonic perforation site was resected. The patient had a favorable outcome.
DISCUSSION: Laparoscopy can play a key role and is recommended not only to make an exact diagnosis, but also for definite, safe, and trauma-minimizing treatment of

The extrusion of the coil complex outside of the aneurysmal dome is thought to be an important mechanism by which the aneurysm neck and fundus recanalize, but the migration of the coil loops and their incorporation inside vital nervous structures has not been clearly described. We reviewed the medical literature on coil extrusion and migration and report a rare case of third nerve palsy due to direct damage caused by coil loop migration that resolved after surgery. A 25-year-old woman presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage and painful left third nerve palsy. The angiogram revealed a supraclino

Bladder stones occasionally develop due to foreign body in the bladder. A 45-year-old woman, who had had an intrauterine contraceptive device inserted 10 years earlier, presented with dysuria, frequency and voiding difficulty with suprapubic pain. The intrauterine device was found in the bladder with stone formation and was removed by cystoscopic procedure.

The purpose of this report is to bring the attention of ophthalmologists to a lesser-known complication of bilateral transconjunctival exposure and scleral erosion caused by malar implant migration. A 26-year-old man presented with severe pain in left eye, worsening on attempted eye movement. His history included a road accident 1 year back, following which he had undergone bilateral malar implant placement. Examination revealed an implant that had migrated superiorly and breached the inferior forniceal conjunctiva, leading to scleral erosion. Exploration was carried out and the implant trimme

The catheter migration after ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) for hydrocephalus is a very rare complication. It is caused by a disconnection or rupture of the catheter. Then, this one can be exteriorized through the anus or the mouth. We report here the case of catheter exteriorization after VPS through the peritoneovaginal duct diagnosed during the hydrocele surgical cure, two years after VPS insertion. The children with VPS require a regular clinical surveillance and a radiographic control of the hydrocephalus valve track, once per year.

BACKGROUND: Although circumcision is the commonest surgical procedure performed on male neonates, complications still arise from all methods used by operators.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: This was a prospective study of penile injuries resulting from proximal migration of the Plastibell device in neonate boys referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria. The parameters measured were patients' biodata, presentation, management and treatment outcome.
RESULTS: Twenty-three injuries resulting from circumcision with the Plastibell device all occurred from prolonged retention of the

OBJECTIVES: In stressful situations, people usually use finger sweep to remove pharyngeal foreign bodies from the mouth. This article reports on three cases of death of infants following the use of this technique.
METHODS: A total of 26 cases of choking caused by foreign bodies aspiration in the upper and lower respiratory passages involving children younger than 11 years of age autopsied at the Forensic Department of University of Jordan between 1996 and 2006 were reviewed.
RESULTS: Blind finger sweep to remove pharyngeal foreign bodies were reported in three crying infants. All of these ca

AIM: The present case report describes colon injury subsequent to uterine penetration which is associated with the use of an intrauterine device (IUD).
CASE: A 29-year-old multiparous woman, who presented with vague abdominal pain, had a TCu 380A inserted at her postpartum third month visit. The T-shaped segment of the IUD was found to be lodged within the lumen of a colon segment which was 60 cm far from the ileocecal valve. The vertical copper-bearing limb of the IUD extruded from the colon wall beyond the mesenteric edge and partially penetrated the fundal wall. After the affected colon se

UNLABELLED: Surgical clips may incorporate into the duodenal ulcer after laparoscopic cholecystectomy leading to a rare complication.
CASE REPORT: A 70-year-old woman, 15 years after laparoscopic cholecystectomy, developed weight loss, anemia and gastric outlet obstruction secondary to a chronic duodenal ulcer. Gastroscopy showed a clip in the ulcer bed. At surgery she was found to have gastric outlet obstruction and mobilization of the duodenum revealed a large ulcer with a migrated clip from the cystic duct in its base. The ulcer was excluded and the clip was removed. She was perfectly well
