An unusual case of corneal perforation secondary to Frontal Bone Mucormycosis.

We present the case of a 52-year-old male with a complex clinical presentation involving frontal sinus osteomyelitis (OM), mechanical ptosis, and extrusion of frontal bone sequestrum under the upper lid skin. He gave a history of chronic sinusitis, an uncontrolled diabetic for the past 2 years. The patient had a history of chronic sinusitis and poorly controlled diabetes for the past 2 years. Histopathological examination of excised sequestrum, stained with hematoxylin and eosin, confirmed a diagnosis of mucormycosis. Anterior segment examination revealed a corneal melt with a shallow anterior

[Regularity of nasal mucous transitional course of different sinuses after functional endoscopic sinus surgery].

OBJECTIVES: To explore the time regularity of nasal mucous transitional course of different sinuses after functional endoscopic sinus surgery. METHODS: Seventy-seven chronic rhinosinusitis patients following functional endoscopic sinus surgery were prospectively collected. The endoscopic appearances of different sinuses were respectively evaluated with Lund-Kennedy scoring system in 2 weeks, 1, 2, 3, 6, 9 months, and 12 months postoperatively. Then the endoscopic scores and epithelization proportions of different sinuses in different stages were analyzed and compared. RESULTS: Of 77 patients

Controversy about the protective role of volume in the frontal sinus after severe head trauma: larger sinus equates with higher risk of death.

The "crumple zone" hypothesis suggests that the paranasal sinuses protect the brain as a zone to distribute and absorb energy after trauma to the head. We investigated the relation between the size of the frontal sinus and mortality in patients with cranial trauma. All patients with head trauma admitted to the ICU between 1 January 2016 and 20 December 2017 were reviewed retrospectively. They were divided into two groups (according to their outcome) : died and survived. The volumes of the frontal sinuses and other trauma-related variables were assessed on computed tomographs (CT) on admission.

The influence of air cavities on the optic chiasm dose during pituitary radiotherapy for acromegaly.

The treatment planning of acromegalic patients can be complicated by the presence of abnormally large frontal air sinuses which allow increased anterior beam transmission causing increased dose to the optic nerve and chiasm which, if excessive, can result in blindness. This potential problem has been investigated by computer treatment planning exercises which have allowed for a variable thickness (1-3 cm) of air cavity beneath the frontal field and for different weightings of the lateral opposed fields relative to the anterior field. The resultant overdosage can be greater than 5% of the inten

Infarction of the orbit and paranasal sinuses in sickle cell disease.

We have reported the case of a 19-year-old black man with sickle cell disease who had swelling over the right frontal and periorbital areas. Plain roentgenograms and CT scans were consistent with frontal sinus disease. At trephination, however, sterile liquescent blood clot was found in the frontal sinus. Awareness of the orbital apex syndrome and infarction of the orbit and sinuses in patients with sickle cell disease is necessary to prevent misdiagnosis of these conditions as suppurative sinusitis.

Anterior chamber to frontal sinus shunt for the diversion of aqueous humor: a pilot study in four normal dogs.

Silicone tubing was used to divert aqueous humor from the anterior chamber of the right eye to the rostral compartment of the right frontal sinus in four clinically normal mixed-breed dogs. Biomicroscopic examination, and pneumoapplanation tonometry and tonography, completed for up to 18 weeks postoperatively, confirmed gonioimplant function in all four cases. The dogs were euthanized at 6, 8, 16 and 18 weeks postoperatively. Gonioimplant patency was further confirmed by postmortem examination of the globes, implants and frontal sinuses. Gross and light microscopic examinations revealed iridal

Revision endoscopic frontal sinusotomy with mucoperiosteal flap advancement: the frontal sinus rescue procedure.

Frontal sinusitis after middle turbinate resection occurs because of stenosis of the frontal ostium by soft tissue scarring or residual bony fragments (which are pulled to the medial orbital wall by scar contracture). Standard endoscopic techniques cannot address this problem; however, revision endoscopic frontal sinusotomy with mucoperiosteal flap advancement (the frontal sinus rescue procedure) relieves this bony stenosis and incorporates a mucosal flap that minimizes postoperative stenosis.

Pott's puffy tumor, intracranial, and orbital complications as the initial presentation of sinusitis in healthy adolescents, a case series.

Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) and intracranial complications of sinusitis are considered rare in the post-antibiotic era. We present a series of pediatric patients who were diagnosed with these complications. The purpose of this study is to discuss the clinical presentations and imaging findings in order to increase awareness of pediatricians and radiologists. A computer search identified nine pediatric patients who were admitted to our hospital between October 2006 and July 2009. The patients' charts and imaging studies were reviewed. There were eight males (11-16 years old) and one female (9 year

[Brain abscess secondary to rhinosinusitis. Therapeutical modalities. Exposition of one case].

Brain abscess (BA) as complication of sinusitis represent around 3% of the cases. Other suppurative intracraneal complications such as epidural abscess, subdural empyema and meningitis are more common than BA. The frontal and ethmoid sinuses form an integral part of anterior and to a lesser extent middle skull base to which the dura is intimately related. Thrombophlebitis of veins associated with paranasal sinuses is considered to be the main route of intracraneal spread of infection. However, osteitis is an uncommon mechanism that typically involves frontal sinus. Chronic sinusitis more than

[Incidence of non-tumor anomalies of the facial sinuses on x-ray computed tomography of the brain of asymptomatic patients. Clinical and radiologic correlations between involvements of ethmoid cells and other sinus cavities].

Two hundred ninety five consecutive brain CT examinations of asymptomatic adults were studied prospectively for detection of nontumoral paranasal sinus abnormalities. CT alterations were found in 104 cases (35.3%), localized to the ethmoid cells in 83 cases, the maxillary sinuses in 56 cases, the sphenoid sinuses in 19 cases, and the frontal sinuses in 18 cases. The relationships between ethmoid cells disease and alterations of the large paranasal cavities are analysed, and the association with previous sinusitis or rhinitis is evaluated. Frontal sinus disease is associated in more than two-th

Minitrephination as an adjunctive measure in the endoscopic management of complex frontal sinus disease.

BACKGROUND: Frontal sinus disease and its surgical management continues to remain an area of controversy among rhinologists. This is evidenced by the multitude of surgical procedures, both external and endoscopic, that have been developed in its management. This study was performed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of frontal sinus minitrephination in combination with endoscopic frontal sinus exploration for the management of complex frontal sinus disease. METHODS: A retrospective chart review identified 13 patients treated with minitrephination, in conjunction with endoscopic frontal sinus

Sinus balloon dilators: one surgeon's experience and proposed indications for their use.

From October 2006 through September 2007, balloon sinusotomies were attempted on 89 sinuses in 45 patients with chronic sinus disease. Ninety-eight percent of sinuses were successfully dilated, 3.4% required revision surgery, and one complication (unlikely related to use of the balloon) occurred. Forty-four percent had previous conventional endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS), 87% were hybrid cases (combination of balloon and conventional ESS instruments used), 33% had nasal polyposis, and 1.98 sinuses per patient were dilated. Preoperative Lund-Mackay radiographic sinus-staging scores averaged 12.

[Clinical and morphological aspects of diagnostics and treatment of exudative frontitis].

The present work is based on the examination of 37 sagittal sawcut sections through the heads of human corpses of either gender. Evacuation paths for the contents of frontal sinuses were studied experimentally in different types of fronto-nasal communication. Two variants of infundibular fronto-nasal communication are described, lateral and medial, formed by the bony septum between uncinate process and bulla ethmoidalis uncinata. It was shown that the direction of evacuation of the contents of a frontal sinusis and the possibility of their rhinoscopic identification are directly dependent on t
