INTRODUCTION: Gait impairment occurs across the spectrum of traumatic brain injury (TBI); from mild (mTBI) to moderate (modTBI), to severe (sevTBI). Recent evidence suggests that objective gait assessment may be a surrogate marker for neurological impairment such as TBI. However, the most optimal method of objective gait assessment is still not well understood due to previous reliance on subjective assessment approaches. The purpose of this review was to examine objective assessment of gait impairments across the spectrum of TBI.
METHODS: PubMed, AMED, OVID and CINAHL databases were searched …

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease which involves both motor and non-motor symptoms. Non-motor mental symptoms are very common among patients with PD since the earliest stage. In this context, gait analysis allows to detect quantitative gait variables to distinguish patients affected by non-motor mental symptoms from patients without these symptoms. A cohort of 68 PD subjects (divided in two groups) was acquired through gait analysis (single and double task) and spatial temporal parameters were analysed; first with a statistical analysis and then with a machine learning (M…

OBJECTIVES: Neonatal brain injury during gait development disrupts neural circuits and causes permanent gait dysfunction. Rehabilitation as an intervention to improve impaired gait function has been used in adults as a treatment for stroke and spinal cord injury. However, although neonates have greater neuroplasticity and regenerative capacity than adults, normal gait development and the effects of habilitation on gait function following neonatal brain injury are largely unknown.
METHODS: In this study, we generated cryogenic injury in mice at postnatal day 2 and subsequently performed habili…

BACKGROUND: The influence of age-related hearing loss on slow gait has been suggested; however, whether it is associated with increased gait variability, an important predictor of fall risk, remains unclear.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Is poor auditory acuity associated with increased gait variability, and does this gait change relate to accidental falls among older adults with hearing loss?
METHODS: We studied 107 older adults (mean age, 76.5 years; 80.5 % women). Auditory acuity was measured using a pure tone average (PTA) of hearing thresholds for 0.5-4 kHz tones in the better-hearing ear. Hearing…

Gait dysfunction is a leading cause of long-term disability after stroke. The mechanisms underlying recovery of gait function are unknown. We retrospectively evaluated the association between structural connectivity and gait function in 127 patients with unilateral supratentorial stroke (>1 month after stroke). All patients underwent T1-weighted, diffusion tensor imaging and functional ambulation categorization. Voxel-wise linear regression analyses of the images were conducted using fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity, and mode of anisotropy mapping as dependent variables, while the funct…

BACKGROUND: Children with hemiparesis are commonly prescribed ankle foot orthoses to help improve gait; however, these orthoses often result in only small and variable changes in gait. Research with adult stroke survivors has suggested that orthoses that extend beyond the ankle using long, passive tendon-like structures (i.e. exotendons) can improve walking.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to quantify the impact of an exotendon-based exoskeleton on pediatric gait.
STUDY DESIGN: Repeated-measures study.
METHODS: Two typically-developing children and two children with hemiparesis comple…

OBJECTIVE: Degenerative processes induce loss of lumbar lordosis and anterior sagittal imbalance (ASI). Optoelectronic study provides kinematic analysis of movement and can also detect ASI. The aim of the present study was to assess gait kinematic modifications induced by ASI.
METHODS: Thirty-five healthy male volunteers were subjected to reversible ASI induced by wearing a kyphotic thermoformed thoracolumbar corset. The deformation was assessed by C7 tilt on EOS (EOS Imaging, Paris, France) full-spine views. Ten optoelectronic gait recordings were made with corset and 10 without. Gait kinema…

Achondroplasia is an autosomal dominant disorder that has been reported to be the most common condition associated with severe disproportionate short stature. A limited number of studies exist in the literature reporting kinematic abnormalities in children with Achondroplasia. Reported deviations include increased pelvic tilt, flexed knees during stance and excessive hip abduction. However, studies lack full 3-dimensional data and results are variable. The aim of this study was to examine differences in 3-dimensional kinematics during gait between children with Achondroplasia and age-matched c…

The patellofemoral (PF) joint is susceptible to many pathologies resulting from acute injury, chronic disease and complications following surgical treatment of the knee. The objectives of this study were to describe case series measurements of patellar motion in healthy older adults as they performed three gait activities, determine patellar tendon angle and moment arm, and show if these quantities were activity dependent. A stereo radiography system was utilized to obtain the 3D PF kinematics of seventeen healthy people over 55 years of age (8F/9M, 66 ± 7.9 years old, 75.7 ± 20.5 kg) as they …

Although specific brain regions are important for regularly patterned limb movements, the rhythm generation system that governs bipedal locomotion in humans is not thoroughly understood. We investigated whether rhythmic transcranial brain stimulation over the cerebellum could alter walking rhythm. Fourteen healthy subjects performed over-ground walking for 10 min during which they were given, in a random order, transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) over the left cerebellum at the approximated frequency of their gait cycle, tACS over the skin of the scalp, and during sham stimulat…

Sleep quality is an important health indicator, and the current measurements of sleep rely on questionnaires, polysomnography, etc., which are intrusive, expensive or time consuming. Therefore, a more nonintrusive, inexpensive and convenient method needs to be developed. Use of the Kinect sensor to capture one's gait pattern can reveal whether his/her sleep quality meets the requirements. Fifty-nine healthy students without disabilities were recruited as participants. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Kinect sensors were used to acquire the sleep quality scores and gait data. After…

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in gait have been associated with high plantar pressures and diabetes-related plantar foot ulcers. Whether these are a transient response to the ulcer or are representative of long-term lower limb biomechanical abnormalities is currently unknown.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine whether 12 gait parameters identified as being associated with nonhealing diabetes-related plantar foot ulcers at baseline remained associated during a 6-month follow-up period.
DESIGN: This was a longitudinal observational case-control study.
METHODS: Gait assessments were p…

Walking is one of the fundamental forms of human gross motor activity in which spatiotemporal movement coordination can occur. While considerable body of evidence already exists on pedestrian movement coordination while walking in pairs, little is known about gait control while walking in more complex topological arrangements. To this end, this study provides some of the first evidence of spontaneous gait synchronisation while walking in a group. Nine subjects covered the total distance of 40 km at different speeds while assembled in a three-by-three formation. Two experimental protocols were …

BACKGROUND: Essential Tremor is characterized by an action tremor of the upper extremities, which may or may not be accompanied by a head, voice, leg or trunk tremor. Problems with gait and balance have also been identified in persons with Essential Tremor. Therefore, understanding gait performance is an important area of focus for clinicians and researchers.
RESEARCH QUESTION: We sought to 1) conduct a factor analysis on a broad spectrum of spatiotemporal gait parameters 2) build upon the normative database of gait measures in persons with Essential Tremor 3) understand the influence of age …

BACKGROUND: Heightened co-activation of the quadriceps and hamstrings has been reported following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction during various tasks, and may contribute to post-traumatic osteoarthritis risk. However, it is unclear if this phenomenon occurs during walking or how co-activation influences gait biomechanics linked to changes in joint health.
METHODS: Co-activation and gait biomechanics were assessed in 50 individuals with ACLR and 25 healthy controls. Biomechanical outcomes included knee flexion displacement, peak vertical ground reaction force magnitude and rate, pea…
