Analysis of arson fire debris by low temperature dynamic headspace adsorption porous layer open tubular columns.

In this paper we present results of the application of PLOT-cryoadsorption (PLOT-cryo) to the analysis of ignitable liquids in fire debris. We tested ignitable liquids, broadly divided into fuels and solvents (although the majority of the results presented here were obtained with gasoline and diesel fuel) on three substrates: Douglas fir, oak plywood and Nylon carpet. We determined that PLOT-cryo allows the analyst to distinguish all of the ignitable liquids tested by use of a very rapid sampling protocol, and performs better (more recovered components, higher efficiency, lower elution solvent…

Evaluating the road safety effects of a fuel cost increase measure by means of zonal crash prediction modeling.

Travel demand management (TDM) consists of a variety of policy measures that affect the transportation system's effectiveness by changing travel behavior. The primary objective to implement such TDM strategies is not to improve traffic safety, although their impact on traffic safety should not be neglected. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the traffic safety impact of conducting a fuel-cost increase scenario (i.e. increasing the fuel price by 20%) in Flanders, Belgium. Since TDM strategies are usually conducted at an aggregate level, crash prediction models (CPMs) should also be d

Study of Miller timing on exhaust emissions of a hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO)-fueled diesel engine.

The effect of intake valve closure (IVC) timing by utilizing Miller cycle and start of injection (SOI) on particulate matter (PM), particle number and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions was studied with a hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO)-fueled nonroad diesel engine. HVO-fueled engine emissions, including aldehyde and polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions, were also compared with those emitted with fossil EN590 diesel fuel. At the engine standard settings, particle number and NOx emissions decreased at all the studied load points (50%, 75%, and 100%) when the fuel was changed from EN590 to HVO.

Experimental investigation on regulated and unregulated emissions of a diesel/methanol compound combustion engine with and without diesel oxidation catalyst.

The use of methanol in combination with diesel fuel is an effective measure to reduce particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from in-use diesel vehicles. In this study, a diesel/methanol compound combustion (DMCC) scheme was proposed and a 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated direct-injection diesel engine modified to operate on the proposed combustion scheme. The effect of DMCC and diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) on the regulated emissions of total hydrocarbons (THC), carbon monoxide (CO), NOx and PM was investigated based on the Japanese 13 Mode test cycle. Certain unregulated

Dissolution, cyclodextrin-enhanced solubilization, and mass removal of an ideal multicomponent organic liquid.

Laboratory experiments and mathematical modeling were conducted to examine the influence of a hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPCD) solution on the dissolution of single- and three-component organic liquids. The results of batch experiments showed that HPCD-enhanced solubilization of the organic-liquid mixtures was ideal (describable using Raoult's Law), and that solubilization-enhancement factors were independent of mixture composition. Addition of the HPCD solution to columns containing residual saturations of the organic liquid enhanced the dissolution and removal of all three compounds in

A case study of real-world tailpipe emissions for school buses using a 20% biodiesel blend.

Numerous laboratory studies report carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and particulate matter emission reductions with a slight nitrogen oxides emission increase from engines operating with biodiesel and biodiesel blends as compared to using petroleum diesel. We conducted a field study on a fleet of school buses to evaluate the effects of biodiesel use on gaseous and particulate matter fuel-based emission factors under real-world conditions. The field experiment was carried out in two phases during winter 2004. In January (phase I), emissions from approximately 200 school buses operating on petroleu

A Comparison of Major Petroleum Life Cycle Models.

Many organizations have attempted to develop an accurate well-to-pump life cycle model of petroleum products in order to inform decision makers of the consequences of its use. Our paper studies five of these models, demonstrating the differences in their predictions and attempting to evaluate their data quality. Carbon dioxide well-to-pump emissions for gasoline showed a variation of 35%, and other pollutants such as ammonia and particulate matter varied up to 100%. Differences in allocation do not appear to explain differences in predictions. Effects of these deviations on well-to-wheels pass…

[Lead exposure and its effects on child health].

Childhood lead poisoning is a man-made disease whose magnitude has not yet been measured in Chile. In the U.S.A. it has been estimated that 4 percent of children have elevated blood lead levels and that among poor black children, this rate is as high as 18 percent. The main sources of symptomatic lead poisoning are lead-based paint used in interior and exterior house surfaces, airborne lead from leaded gasoline and industrial emissions. Lead can be transferred from any source to soil and dust. Other sources of lead are contaminated food and water, occupational sources, and lead glazed pottery.…

Near-wake dispersion of light-duty truck emissions: impact of fuel type and vehicle speed.

This study experimentally investigates the near-wake dispersion of gaseous pollutants emitted from a light-duty truck operating at two representative speeds (42 and 55 km/h) with diesel and a B50 biodiesel-diesel blend. A 1:20-scale truck model was tested in a controlled wind tunnel to examine the effects of vehicle speed and fuel type on the dispersion of CO, CO2, NOx, and NO2. Results show that increasing speed increases vehicle-induced turbulence and accelerates pollutant diffusion, resulting in lower near-field concentrations. At 55 km/h, the diesel-biodiesel blend produces a higher exhaus

Influence of road and traffic conditions on emissions and fuel consumption of light vehicles in a real urban driving cycle.

Over time, international decision-making bodies have paid a special attention to the adoption of test driving cycles in the laboratory that reflect standard traffic conditions and regulations regarding the maximum limit of pollutant emissions from road vehicles to be homologated for their admittance to traffic. The proposed study examines the impact of road and traffic characteristics on pollutant emissions and fuel consumption of light vehicles in a real urban traffic cycle. The research was carried out following two scenarios, in two phases, each of them focusing on the analysis of greenhous

Sex-specific metabolic adaptations from in utero exposure to particulate matter derived from combustion of petrodiesel and biodiesel fuels.

Maternal exposure to particulate matter derived from diesel exhaust has been shown to cause metabolic dysregulation, neurological problems, and increased susceptibility to diabetes in the offspring. Diesel exhaust is a major source of air pollution and the use of biodiesel (BD) and its blends have been progressively increasing throughout the world; however, studies on the health impact of BD vs. petrodiesel combustion-generated exhaust have been controversial in part, due to differences in the chemical and physical nature of the associated particulate matter (PM). To explore the long-term impa

Adsorptive removal of dibenzothiophene from model fuels over one-pot synthesized PTA@MIL-101(Cr) hybrid material.

Hybrid nanomaterials comprising phosphotungstic acid (PTA) and MIL-101(Cr) were prepared through one-pot synthesis and post-modification methods and then were used as adsorbents of dibenzothiophene (DBT) from simulated diesel fuels. Samples obtained by different ways (encapsulation and impregnation) were characterized by nitrogen adsorption, transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR) and series of adsorption experiments. The equilibrium adsorption capacities of PTA@MIL-101(Cr) illustrated that the direct introduction of PTA into

Factors affecting heavy-duty diesel vehicle emissions.

Societal and governmental pressures to reduce diesel exhaust emissions are reflected in the existing and projected future heavy-duty certification standards of these emissions. Various factors affect the amount of emissions produced by a heterogeneous charge diesel engine in any given situation, but these are poorly quantified in the existing literature. The parameters that most heavily affect the emissions from compression ignition engine-powered vehicles include vehicle class and weight, driving cycle, vehicle vocation, fuel type, engine exhaust aftertreatment, vehicle age, and the terrain t

Accessible high-performance GC×GC: A DIY flow modulator with transient pulse sampling strategy.

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC) offers high separation capabilities for complex samples, but widespread adoption remains limited by instrumental costs. We present an integrated solution combining a cost-effective DIY flow modulator (main components <100 USD) with a transient pulse sampling (TPS) strategy. The TPS approach achieves superior separation efficiency through ultrashort sampling pulses (∼10 ms) while maintaining stable quantitative performance across diverse compound classes. Analysis of gasoline samples demonstrated accurate determination of benzene deriva…
