AI-powered "undressing" apps generate sexually explicit deepfakes from authentic images without consent, representing a profound escalation in image-based sexual abuse. This study analyzes 29 such apps, examining their technical affordances, marketing strategies, revenue models, and privacy policies. Findings reveal that these platforms facilitate and encourage the creation of nonconsensual intimate images (NCII), normalize women's objectification, and contribute to a culture in which women's privacy and autonomy are undermined. By framing deepfake abuse as a form of gender-based violence, thi…

Street Haven's residential addictions treatment program offers a 90-day residential treatment program to highly vulnerable women who suffer from significant health and social care complexity, including homelessness, experience with gender-based violence, mental illness and chronic diseases. Despite the complexity of the needs of the clients, the program supports recovery, greater housing and enhanced overall well-being for the women it serves. The critical factors contributing to the success of the program include client readiness, pre-treatment programming, group-based programming, evidence-b…

Among women and men who have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV), what proportion had contact with informal or formal sources of help, and how helpful were these sources considered? Does the type of violence experienced influence the likelihood of help-seeking? One thousand, four hundred sixty-four ever-partnered women, 1,423 ever-partnered men. This study used a population-based and representative sample of New Zealand women and men who experienced IPV to present descriptive statistics of those who sought help from informal (e.g., family and friends) or formal (e.g., police, healthcar

BACKGROUND: One-in-three women has experienced domestic violence, which is a serious public health problem and a human right violation. Domestic violence is a common life experience among women in Ethiopia. The tool used to assess violence against women (VAW) has not been validated to assess its consistency. Cronbach's alpha (α, or coefficient alpha) is a measure of internal consistency, or reliability, that is, how closely a set of items are related as a group. Reliability is how well a test measures what it should. Therefore, the aim of this study was to estimate the inter-item correlation (

This study presents the first Canadian self-reported estimates of child maltreatment (CM) from youth using data from 5256 participants aged 15 to 17 years in the 2023 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth. CM prevalence was high, particularly for emotional abuse (44.9%) and exposure to caregiver emotional intimate partner violence (39.4%). Females reported higher prevalence of sexual abuse (8.1% vs. 1.5%) and emotional abuse (52.2% vs. 35.4%) than males. Youth identifying as nonbinary or with a gender different from their sex assigned at birth reported the highest prevalence across all

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence (IPV) can be described as a violation of human rights that results from gender inequality. It has arisen as a contemporary issue in societies from both developing and industrialized countries and an impediment to long-term development. This study evaluates the prevalence of IPV and its variants among the empowerment status of women and identify the associated sociodemographic parameters, linked to IPV.
METHODS: This study is based on data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) of India, 2019-21 a nationwide survey that provides scientific data on

PURPOSE: To determine which screening questions used in routine adolescent health care maintenance visits correlate with subsequent violence-related injury.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study was undertaken of adolescents initially seen at the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center (EBNHC) in 1986. Risk factor data were collected based on the adolescent health intake form in the medical records. The primary outcome measure, time until first violence-related injury was determined through identification on chart review of the treatment of any such injuries at the urgent care center at EBNHC in

Contemporary prevention discourse increasingly defines its mission as "empowering individuals" - building resilience, skills and assertiveness so that people can resist substance use, bullying, abuse, gambling, violence and gender-based harms. Such individual-level (i-frame) interventions can be effective, and several rest on a solid evidence base. Drawing on Chater and Loewenstein's i-frame/s-frame distinction and on classical public-health scholarship from Rose, McKinlay, Marmot and Marteau, this paper argues that the field has drifted into a near-monopoly of the i-frame and sidelined the en

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women is a public health concern and a human rights violation. Women in low- and middle-income countries such as India experience higher rates of violence than in high-income countries. Experiencing IPV during pregnancy is associated with worse maternal, foetal and child outcomes. There is relatively limited representative population-based data on the burden and related factors of IPV experienced by women during pregnancy in India. This study aimed to ascertain the prevalence of experiences of physical IPV during pregnancy and the factors ass

The purpose of this article is to explore some underlying mechanisms of women's psychological aggression in intimate partner violence (IPV), as a phenomenon that requires better understanding and intervention, even in cases when it does not lead to physical violence. Psychological aggression is known to be the most prevalent pattern of IPV for both genders, and its impact on many survivors is known to be equal and sometimes worse than that of physical harm. Despite the fact that most aggressive conflicts between couples do not escalate into physical violence, research mainly addresses psycholo

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) has profound adverse consequences on women's physical, mental, and reproductive health. Although Vietnam has high rates of induced abortion and GBV, literature examining this relationship is lacking.
OBJECTIVE: This study examines the association of GBV with induced abortion among married or partnered women of reproductive age in Thai Nguyen province, Vietnam. In addition, we explore contraceptive use and unintended pregnancy as mediators in the pathway between GBV and induced abortion.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Data were drawn from a cross-sectional survey …

Sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY) are more likely to experience bullying and violence compared to the youth who do not identify as SGMY, leading to increased risk of poor mental and physical health outcomes, and poor academic performance. Few studies explore the entire range of bullying experienced by sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY). The purpose of this study was to qualitatively describe the ways in which SGMY experience bullying victimization. We conducted semi-structured interviews with a diverse sample of 20 SGMY aged 14-18 years (median age 16 years) recruited from online so

This article sheds light on the abuse of mothers toward their daughters and its potential influence on the violent behavior of the latter as adults. It contributes to the scarce knowledge on the effects of abuse of each parent on their children by gender. The article is part of a larger study describing the experience of 30 women in Israel who were abusive or violent toward their male partners. It presents the stories of 14 women from the sample who, when sharing their memories of childhood and family-of-origin, spoke of an abusive relationship with their mothers. The various types of these re

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Women with opioid use disorder (OUD) face unique challenges the moment they enter treatment. This narrative review focused on recent literature regarding sex- and gender-based issues that could affect treatment outcomes in women with OUD.
RECENT FINDINGS: Women respond differently to opioids based on hormonal factors, are more likely to present to treatment with mental health conditions, especially depression, and are more likely to have experienced trauma via intimate partner violence compared with men. Women also face stigma when entering OUD treatment, particularly if th

In Australia, domestic violence reports are mostly based on data from the police, courts, hospitals, and ad hoc surveys. However, gaps exist in reporting information such as victim injuries, mental health status and abuse types. The police record details of domestic violence events as structured information (e.g., gender, postcode, ethnicity), but also in text narratives describing other details such as injuries, substance use, and mental health status. However, the voluminous nature of the narratives has prevented their use for surveillance purposes. We used a validated text mining methodolog

BACKGROUND: There are many studies that address the issue of gender-based violence, but few analyse the police-reported cases. It is as important to analyse the temporal and geographic distribution of these incidents as it is the sociodemographic profile of the accuser. To this effect, the present study aims to analyse the sociodemographic profile of the victims of the particular case of domestic violence that report the incident to the police and to evaluate the spatial-temporal distribution of these reports.
METHODS: Using the data from a database containing the police-reported incidents of…
