Temporal and spatial distribution of dengue in an urban setting: evidence from Hanoi, Vietnam (2018-2022).

Dengue fever remains a major mosquito-borne disease in Southeast Asia, with increasing incidence in rapidly urbanizing settings. In Vietnam, Hanoi has experienced recurrent outbreaks; however, comprehensive analyses of recent dengue epidemiology in northern regions remain limited. This study aimed to characterize the spatiotemporal dynamics of dengue in Hanoi from 2018 to 2022. A retrospective descriptive study was conducted using routine dengue surveillance data collected by the Hanoi Center for Disease Control. All clinically diagnosed and laboratory-confirmed dengue cases reported between J

Integrating human mobility and animal movement data reveals complex space-use between humans and white-tailed deer in urban environments.

Human expansion into wildlife habitats has increased the need to understand human-wildlife interactions, necessitating interdisciplinary approaches to assess zoonotic disease transmission risks and public health impacts. This study integrated fine-grained human foot traffic data with hourly GPS data from 38 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), a species linked to SARS-CoV-2, brucella, and chronic wasting disease, in Howard County, Maryland. We explored spatial and temporal overlap between human and deer activity over 24 months (2018-2019) across a hexagonal tessellation with metrics lik

Predicting hotspots of unsheltered homelessness using geospatial administrative data and volunteered geographic information.

Unsheltered homelessness is an increasingly prevalent phenomenon in major cities that is associated with adverse health and mortality outcomes. This creates a need for spatial estimates of population denominators for resource allocation and epidemiological studies. Gaps in the timeliness, coverage, and spatial specificity of official Point-in-Time Counts of unsheltered homelessness suggest a role for geospatial data from alternative sources to provide interim, neighborhood-level estimates of counts and trends. We use citizen-generated data from homeless-related 311 requests, provider-based adm

Establishing reliable acceleration-speed profiles: Minimum data requirements in rugby union matches.

The aim of this study was to determine the minimum playing time in matches required to produce reliable acceleration - speed (AS) profiles from global navigation satellite system (GNSS) data. The playing time of 25 professional rugby union players was recorded using GNSS technology and segmented into four sections from 40, 80, 120 and 160 minutes of play. For each interval, the impact of integrating new match data on the AS profile was assessed, aiming to identify the saturation point where additional data did not induce significant changes in the profile outputs. A repeated measures ANOVA and

Use of wild bird surveillance, human case data and GIS spatial analysis for predicting spatial distributions of West Nile virus in Greece.

West Nile Virus (WNV) is the causative agent of a vector-borne, zoonotic disease with a worldwide distribution. Recent expansion and introduction of WNV into new areas, including southern Europe, has been associated with severe disease in humans and equids, and has increased concerns regarding the need to prevent and control future WNV outbreaks. Since 2010, 524 confirmed human cases of the disease have been reported in Greece with greater than 10% mortality. Infected mosquitoes, wild birds, equids, and chickens have been detected and associated with human disease. The aim of our study was to

Elevation and cholera: an epidemiological spatial analysis of the cholera epidemic in Harare, Zimbabwe, 2008-2009.

BACKGROUND: In highly populated African urban areas where access to clean water is a challenge, water source contamination is one of the most cited risk factors in a cholera epidemic. During the rainy season, where there is either no sewage disposal or working sewer system, runoff of rains follows the slopes and gets into the lower parts of towns where shallow wells could easily become contaminated by excretes. In cholera endemic areas, spatial information about topographical elevation could help to guide preventive interventions. This study aims to analyze the association between topographic

Environmental inducers of schistosomiasis mansoni in Campinas, Brazil.

Human occupation/activity in the suburbs of the large cities in Brazil, together with high social vulnerability associated with poor living conditions, influence the dynamics of schistosomiasis mansoni as well as several other emerging and re-emerging diseases. Previous notification data surveys for Campinas, São Paulo state, Brazil, carried out by the Information System for Notification Disease, show that there are distinct prevalence differences across healthcare districts of the city. This paper supports the hypothesis that the distribution of schistosomiasis is not random and that the cent

Environmental justice: a contrary finding for the case of high-voltage electric power transmission lines.

Environmental justice is the consideration of whether minority and/or lower-income residents in a geographic area are likely to have disproportionately higher exposures to environmental toxins than those living elsewhere. Such situations have been identified for a variety of factors, such as air pollution, hazardous waste, water quality, noise, residential crowding, and housing quality. This study investigates the application of this concept to high-voltage electric power transmission lines (HVTL), which some perceive as a health risk because of the magnetic fields they generate, and also as e

Road-network-Based spatial allocation of on-road mobile source emissions in the Pearl River Delta region, China, and comparisons with population-based approach.

Gridded air pollutant emission inventories are prerequisites for using air quality models to assess air pollution control strategies and predict air quality. A precise gridded emission inventory will help improve the accuracy of air quality simulation. Mobile source emissions are one of the major contributors to volatile organic compound (VOC) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) pollutants, the precursors of ozone formation. However, because of the complexity of road networks and variations in traffic flows at different road types and locations, spatial allocation of emissions from mobile sources into gr

Distribution and risk factors of bovine cysticercosis in Belgian dairy and mixed herds.

Bovine cysticercosis is an important food safety issue that is of economic concern. In Belgium, in the last years an increase in the number of cases, mostly light infections, was observed. The role of contact with contaminated surface water has been hypothesized as the main route of transmission. Based on abattoir records from 2001 till 2003 the distribution and risk factors of bovine cysticercosis among dairy and mixed farms were studied in four provinces, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and questionnaires. The risk factors were analysed using a case-control study design. The case …

Global epidemiology, ecology and control of soil-transmitted helminth infections.

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are among the most prevalent of chronic human infections worldwide. Based on the demonstrable impact on child development, there is a global commitment to finance and implement control strategies with a focus on school-based chemotherapy programmes. The major obstacle to the implementation of cost-effective control is the lack of accurate descriptions of the geographical distribution of infection. In recent years, considerable progress has been made in the use of geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) to better understand helmi

Avian GIS models signal human risk for West Nile virus in Mississippi.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) poses a significant health risk for residents of Mississippi. Physicians and state health officials are interested in new and efficient methods for monitoring disease spread and predicting future outbreaks. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) models have the potential to support these efforts. Environmental conditions favorable for mosquito habitat were modeled using GIS to derive WNV risk maps for Mississippi. Variables important to WNV dissemination were selected and classified as static and dynamic. The static variables included road density, stream densit…
