The increasing prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) suggests that dental practices will be seeing patients with this diagnosis more frequently. Although patients with ASD have similar dental needs to other patients, the symptoms of the disorder may influence the ability of dental practitioners to provide necessary care. Dental professionals may be unaware of the difficulties with sensory processing common to patients with ASD. However, awareness of sensory processing issues and knowledge of strategies to improve the sensory experience for individuals with ASD may improve dental visits

A total of 194 children aged 7-15 years participated in this study. Fifty-seven traumatic injuries to permanent teeth were observed in 33 children. Although a statistically significant difference was not found (p= .848), the rate of incidence was higher in the group with ADHD (17.5%) than in the control group (16.5%). The maxillary right central incisors accounted for nearly half of all injured teeth, while the maxillary central incisors

Schwartz-Jampel syndrome (SJS) is a rare autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia associated with myotonia. The manifestations of SJS include short stature, blepharophimosis, and skeletal anomalies. The combination of skeletal and muscular abnormalities may result in oro-dental manifestations such as atypical facies, with micrognathia, microstomia, pursed lips, crossbite, cleft palate, as well as mandibular hypoplasia, the risk of dentigerous cysts, and impacted teeth. The use of general anesthesia in patients with SJS is dangerous, as there is a risk of malignant hyperthermia. The purpose of th

Excision of squamous cell carcinoma from the lower lip of a patient can result in limited mouth opening (microstomia). For any patients who have this condition, routine or general dentistry and prosthetic treatment is challenging. Traditional denture techniques tend to be unsatisfactory, due to the patients' reduced ability to open their mouth. The use of sectional and modified dentures and those with a small degree of flexibility has been reported to be useful for patients needing complete dentures. This case report presents a flexible denture base material that can be manipulated on insertio

Senile purpura occurs because of a weakness of the vascular supporting tissues mainly caused by aging and is most often seen on the dorsal surface of the hands and the extensor surfaces of the forearms, and has also been observed in the oral mucosa of elderly patients. These red lesions present as sharply margined subcutaneous hemorrhagic spots and are due to trauma, such as damage to the endothelium of small blood vessels, or a coagulation defect. They can also be due to reduced perivascular support, or capillary fragility and permeability, or a combination of all of these factors. Oral manif

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the type of cerebral palsy (CP) and oral motor function (OMF) on the oral health status of children and adolescents with CP in Teresina, Piauí, Brazil. The sample consisted of 52 children with CP, aged 7 to 18 years. The data were statistically analyzed using chi-square tests. In 73.1% of the sample, the subjects’ caregivers carried out the daily oral care. There was a significant association between the frequency of daily care and the subject's level of oral hygiene (p = .037). A diagnosis of Class II malocclusion was made for 55.8%

The motor effort of jaw-closing muscles during maximal voluntary clenching (MVC) was compared between individuals with spastic cerebral palsy (CP) and nondisabled control subjects (CG). Bilateral electromyographic (EMG) activity of the anterior temporalis (AT) and masseter (MS) muscles was obtained during MVC in 22 subjects with CP and 29 nondisabled subjects. The oral functional status of the group with CP was evaluated using the Orofacial Motor Function Assessment Scale. Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare and debilitating genetic disorder of skeletal malformations and progressive heterotopic ossification. Flare-ups are episodic, with bone formation in skeletal muscle and connective tissue leading to ankylosis of major joints of the axial and appendicular skeleton. This report outlines the management of a patient with FOP who had ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint and progressive ossification of the neck structures. The patient underwent two different surgical and anesthetic procedures within a 10-year period to manage his oral pain. Th

The main significance of the NS lesion lies in the fact that it may be mistaken for mucoepidermoid or squamous cell carcinoma. A case report is presented of a patient with NS who was HIV positive; the lesion was located in the minor salivary glands of the hard palate. Clinically, the lesion presented as a deep ulcer with slightly elevated irregular borders and a necrotic base in the hard palate. Hurler syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of mucopolysaccharide metabolism. It results from a deficiency in lysosomal enzymes responsible for the breakdown of glycosaminoglycans. Affected individuals may show progressive physical and mental deterioration as glycosaminoglycans are deposited in the organs of the body. Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is effective in improving some of the clinical manifestations of Hurler syndrome. Death is caused by cardiorespiratory failure and usually occurs before the second decade of life. In this case report, the course of dental development w

Drug-induced gingival enlargement has been reported in patients treated with various types of anticonvulsant drugs, and is generally associated with the presence of plaque, gingival inflammation, and a genetic predisposition. Effective treatment includes daily oral hygiene and periodic professional prophylaxis. However, in some patients, surgical removal of the gingival tissue overgrowth becomes necessary. The patient in this case report was mentally impaired and had severe drug-induced gingival enlargement. This report describes the initial protocol, the gingivectomy, and a 2-year follow-up.
