Adapted psychotherapy for suicidal geriatric patients with depression.

UNLABELLED: This debate article aims to evaluate whether current diagnostic and therapeutic options for suicidal geriatric patients with depression suffice, and which adapted strategies might be helpful. We hope to encourage clinicians to consider special approaches when treating the elderly. BACKGROUND: Suicide in old age is a major public health problem, as the suicide rates are highest among those aged 60 years and older in most European countries. Although pharmacological treatment options are relatively easy for older patients to obtain, their access to standard psychotherapy is limited.

Characterizing cancer cachexia in the geriatric oncology population.

OBJECTIVES: Cancer cachexia, characterized by weight loss and sarcopenia, leads to a decline in physical function and is associated with poorer survival. Cancer cachexia remains poorly described in older adults with cancer. This study aims to characterize cancer cachexia in older adults by assessing its prevalence utilizing standard definitions and evaluating associations with components of the geriatric assessment (GA) and survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with cancer older than 65 years of age who underwent a GA and had baseline CT imaging were eligible in this cross-sectional study

The Giant Geriatric Syndromes Are Intensified by Diabetic Complications.

By 2015, diabetes has affected more than 415 million people over the world. It is anticipated that 640 million adults will suffer from diabetes in 2040. The elongation of the life expectancy, as the result of better general health care, extends also the time when diabetic complications may develop together with other senility-specific problems. The Giant Geriatric Syndromes (Geriatric Giants) have been qualified by the original Nascher's criteria defined more than 100 years ago, but they are becoming more and more relevant in connection with the aging of societies. The criteria comprise the ol

Electroconvulsive Therapy in Geriatric Psychiatry: A Selective Review.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains an important treatment of geriatric patients. ECT treats severe depression, mania, psychosis, catatonia, and comorbid depression and agitation in dementia. ECT also serves a crucial role in treating urgent illness requiring expedient recovery, such as catatonia, or in patients with severe suicidal ideation or intent. ECT is even more effective in the elderly than in mixed-age adult populations. ECT is a safe treatment option with few medical contraindications. Cognitive effects are largely transient, even in patients with preexisting cognitive impairment

Dementia and osteoporosis in a geriatric population: Is there a common link?

AIM: To determine the existence of a common pathological link between dementia and osteoporosis through reviewing the current evidence base. METHODS: This paper reviews the current literature on osteoporosis and dementia in order to ascertain evidence of a common predisposing aetiology. A literature search of Ovid MED-LINE (1950 to June 2016) was conducted. The keywords "osteoporosis", "osteoporotic fracture", "dementia" and "Alzheimer's disease" (AD) were used to determine the theoretical links with the most significant evidence base behind them. The key links were found to be vitamins D and

A Geriatric Perspective on Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of vertigo in older adults. Beyond the unpleasant sensation of vertigo, BPPV also negatively affects older adults' gait and balance and increases their risk of falling. As such it has a profound effect on function, independence, and quality of life. Otoconia are the inner ear structures that help detect horizontal and vertical movements. Aging contributes to the fragmentation of otoconia, whose displacement into the semicircular, most commonly posterior canals, can produce rotatory movement sensations with head movement. BPPV

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions in geriatric dogs.

Recordings of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) were taken from 28 geriatric dogs aged 12.2 ± 2.2 years and 15 control dogs aged 5.9 ± 3.0 years (mean ± standard deviation) to demonstrate frequency-specific changes in cochlear responses. Recordings were performed for primary frequencies of 2-12 kHz in 2 kHz increments. Brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) recordings were also made from geriatric dogs for comparison with DPOAE responses. Significant decreases in DPOAE response amplitudes were observed at frequencies of 6-12 kHz in geriatric dogs compared to control dogs, ref

Why do geriatric patients visit otorhinolaryngology?

The number and proportion of people more than 65 years old in the population are increasing with the rise in life expectancy. This study was designed to investigate the otolarygologic needs and visits of geriatric patients. We conducted a retrospective study that included all patients ≥65 years of age who visited the otolaryngology department between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. during 1 year. Age, gender, main complaint, and clinical diagnosis were noted on a chart and analyzed. In 2012, a total of 19,875 patients attended the otolaryngology department between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., of whom 418 (2.1%) were

Epidemiology of Geriatric Trauma in an Urban Kazakhstani Setting.

BACKGROUND: External causes of death are still among the main causes of death in the countries of the former Soviet Union. We studied epidemiology of injuries among elderly in a typical Kazakhstani city. METHODS: Data on all injuries among individuals aged 60 yr or older in the city of Semey (former Semipalatinsk) from 2010 to 2012 was collected from medical files. We present absolute numbers and incidence rates for the main ICD-codes in Chapters XIX and XX of ICD-10 by gender, ethnic background and place where the injury occurred. RESULTS: Altogether, there were 6065 injuries in 2010-2012.

Aesthetic Motivation of Geriatric Rhinoplasty The Surgical Outcome.

BACKGROUND: Rhinoplasty in the elderly population has recently emerged as an issue in terms of rejuvenation. There, however, is a paucity of published data on geriatric rhinoplasty in Asian patients. The aims of this study were to investigate the motivation of aged Korean patients to undergo the procedure, and to demonstrate our experience of rhinoplasty in patients of 60 years of age and older. METHODS: A total of 20 patients, 11 men and 9 women, underwent rhinoplasty between December 2003 and September 2012 at the Asan Medical Center. Anthropometric measurements were performed preoperativel

Total thyroidectomy in geriatric patients: a retrospective study.

In the English literature there is no single definition that identifies elderly patients. In our retrospective study, we divided total thyroidectomized patients operated on from 2000 to 2010 in the Department of Surgical Sciences of the "Sapienza" University of Rome, in two groups: group 1 consists of 448 patients over 65 years and group 2 consists of 1275 patients under 65 years. We compared both groups in terms of indications for surgery, histological diagnoses, postoperative complications (laryngeal nerv palsy, hypocalcemia, bleeding and seroma) and mortality. The results showed no statisti

Proposed treatment for geriatric vestibular disease in dogs.

Sudden-onset vestibular dysfunction in the canine is a commonly seen condition in veterinary practice, with some veterinarians reporting several cases each month. However, traditional veterinary medicine has little to offer these patients other than symptomatic relief for the severe nausea that accompanies the vertigo and supportive advice for the owners. Owners of affected dogs are informed that these symptoms usually resolve within a few days. As physical therapists, we often see cases of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo in our human practice clinics, and effective protocols for diagnosi

Mode of anesthesia, mortality and outcome in geriatric patients.

BACKGROUND: In older non-cardiac surgery patients, the influence of the mode of anesthesia on late-term outcome (rehabilitation, mobility, independence) is a controversial issue in the medical literature. In light of an aging society, this review assessed the association between regional (RA), local (LA) and general anesthesia (GA) and mortality and morbidity. METHODS: A literature search within the PubMed and Cochrane databases yielded 47 clinical trials and 35 reviews/meta-analyses published between 1965 and 2013. Potential outcome-influencing factors such as mortality, risk factors, early

[Early geriatric rehabilitation: an opportunity for the oldest old].

BACKGROUND: Physicians in Germany who are not specialized in geriatric medicine often have to make decisions regarding referral of patients for early geriatric rehabilitation. The risk of inadequate patient allocation is due to lack of knowledge or underestimation of the potential benefit of early rehabilitation in reducing a patient's need of care. Particularly the oldest old are affected by those inadequate decisions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on the nationwide database Gemidas Pro, the data sets of ≥ 90-year-old patients were analysed regarding diagnoses, multimorbidity, gender, length

Therapeutic plasmapheresis in geriatric patients: favorable results.

Therapeutic plasma exchange is generally a tolerable procedure, although several complications should be considered. Since geriatric population has been growing worldwide, the aim of this study was to retrospectively analyze 4709 TPE data from 981 geriatric procedures (20.8%) and to compare them with 3728 non-geriatric procedures (79.2%). The most common indications for TPE in both groups were sepsis/adult respiratory distress syndrome and multiple organ dysfunction. In geriatric patient group, contrary to expectations of aggravation, complication rate was statistically similar with non-geriat
