Language beyond action.

The discovery of mirror neurons in macaques and of a similar system in humans has provided a new and fertile neurobiological ground for root … Does language comprehension require the motor system? Was there an evolutionary switch from manual gestures to speech as the primary mode of language? Is human communication explained by automatic sensorimotor resonances? A positive answer to these questions would open the tantalizing possibility of bringing language and human communication within the fol …

Three studies of deficits in pantomimic expression and pantomimic recognition in aphasia.

Studies were conducted to investigate aphasic deficits in pantomimic behaviors. Three groups of subjects were used: 47 aphasics; 27 right-hemisphere-damaged; and 11 controls. Study I replicates a previous study of pantomimic recognition deficits (Duffy, Duffy, & Pearson, 1975) and essentially duplicates the previous findings of significant deficits of pantomimic recognition in aphasic subjects that are highly correlated with their verbal deficits. Study II examines the relationship between deficits in pantomimic recognition and expression; and the relationships between these two nonverbal beha

Views of Parents on Supporting Language and Literacy for Their Children With Complex Communication Needs.

PURPOSE: Understanding students' home literacy environments can help speech-language pathologists, teachers, and other educators partner wit … ther autism or Down syndrome, and they ranged from primarily communicating prelinguistically (e.g., gestures and nonword vocalizations) to using some two to three word phrases in different modes (e.g., speech, sign, and aided augmentative and alternative communication [AAC]). Each parent was interviewed three times over the 2020-2021 school year, and data …

Different facets of object-use pantomime: online TMS evidence on the role of the supramarginal gyrus.

BACKGROUND: A key question in apraxia research is which specific cognitive processes in pantomiming the parietal cortex supports. The manipulation-based hypothesis and the technical-reasoning hypothesis ascribe different roles to the inferior parietal lobule (IPL). OBJECTIVE: We elucidated the role of the left supramarginal gyrus (SMG, i.e., part of IPL) during the processing of different aspects of object-use pantomime. METHODS: Thirty-one healthy participants matched pantomimes with the corresponding object (PO) or the corresponding situation (PS) during online transcranial magnetic stimul

Horses are sensitive to baby talk: pet-directed speech facilitates communication with humans in a pointing task and during grooming.

Pet-directed speech (PDS) is a type of speech humans spontaneously use with their companion animals. It is very similar to speech commonly u … ching the horse with their hand, the horses (n = 20) carried out significantly more mutual grooming gestures toward the experimenter, looked at the person more, and moved less when spoken to with PDS than with Adult-directed speech (ADS). During a pointing task in which the experimenter pointed at the location of a reward with their finger, horses who had …

Computer vision for evaluating retraction of the neurovascular bundle during nerve-sparing prostatectomy.

The nerve-sparing step of prostatectomy is crucial for post-operative sexual recovery, and excessive countertraction on the neurovascular bundle (NVB) during retraction has been associated with adverse sexual function outcomes. Our objective is to utilize computer vision to quantitatively assess the degree of this countertraction to study its impact on post-operative sexual recovery. Sixty-four nerve-sparing prostatectomy videos were used to extract snapshots prior to and at the maximum point of retraction gestures on the NVB. Semantic image segmentation, conducted with the Computer Vision Ann…

The role of the left primary motor cortex in apraxia.

BACKGROUND: Apraxia is a motor-cognitive disorder that primary sensorimotor deficits cannot solely explain. Previous research in stroke pati … nts with lesions involving left M1 performed differentially worse when imitating meaningless finger gestures. This effect was primarily driven by lesions affecting Brodmann area 4p. CONCLUSIONS: Even though many current definitions of apraxia disregard a relevant role of (left) M1, the observed differential effect of M1 lesions, specifically involving sub …

Update on apraxia.

Apraxia is classically defined as difficulty performing learned, skilled gestures. In this review, we describe the range of motor impairments classified as apraxia, focusing on ideomotor limb apraxia. We present several prominent models of praxis to explain the variety of difficulties seen in patients with apraxia. We also discuss the large-scale frontal-parietal-basal ganglia network thought to underlie praxis. In this context, we highlight the common occurrence of limb apraxia in corticobasal degeneration, a neurodegenerative condition characterized by frontal, parietal, and basal ganglia di…

Separate visual pathways for perception of actions and objects: evidence from a case of apperceptive agnosia.

Recognition of different kinds of visual stimuli was studied in a patient who acquired apperceptive visual agnosia after a bilateral occipitotemporal lesion which partially spared the primary visual cortex. Impairment in recognising static objects perceived visually sharply contrasts with the relatively well preserved ability to recognise objects from gestures illustrating their use, and to recognise actions shown in line drawings. It is suggested that the occipitoparieto-frontal pathway is involved in the recognition of actions, and in the recognition of objects when sensorimotor experience i…

[Phoniatric record during voice rehabilitation for kissing nodules in a child].

Dysphonia in the child occurs relatively frequently. More often than not it is the result of strain, but a phoniatric examination is worthwhile to determine whether or not vocal rehabilitation is required, the purpose being to make the child aware of the vocal gesture and correct his or her vocal attitude. A phoniatric follow-up can sometimes determine the need for surgery when the nodules hinder the vocal development of a young singer.

The effect of whisper and creak vocal mechanisms on vocal tract resonances.

The frequencies of vocal tract resonances estimated using whisper and creak phonations are compared with those in normal phonation for subjects who produced pairs of these phonations in the same vocal gesture. Peaks in the spectral envelope were used to measure the frequencies of the first four resonances (R1-R4) for the non-periodic phonations, and broadband excitation at the mouth was used to measure them with similar precision in normal phonation. For resonances R1-R4, whispering raises the average resonant frequencies by 255 Hz with standard deviation 90 Hz, 115 + or - 105, 125 + or - 125,

A novel technique for the quantitative assessment of apraxic deficits: application to individuals with mild cognitive impairment.

The purpose of this study was to apply two novel quantitative assessments of apraxia to issues surrounding the cognitive profile of individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) who are at increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In particular, it was wished to determine whether such quantitative assessment techniques can detect minor degrees of impairment at a stage in the putative disease process before apraxia has become clinically obvious. A total of 23 individuals with MCI and 75 healthy controls were assessed on two 3-item sequential movement tasks involving either meaningful or me

Relieving pressure.

Mrs Smith has been resident on a continuing care ward for approximately six years. She was originally admitted after a left cerebral vascular accident that resulted in a right-sided hemiplegia. She is dysphasic but appears to understand much of what is said to her, and she is continent of urine and faeces, using facial expressions and body gestures to communicate her needs. In recent years her weight has increased from 63 kg to 83 kg and she is now chairbound, following a recent leg fracture.

Optic aphasia: evidence of the contribution of different neural systems to object and action naming.

Visual stimulus naming was studied in a 66-year-old male patient with optic aphasia subsequent to left occipito-temporal infarction. While having difficulty in naming objects perceived visually, he was able to name objects by viewing gestures illustrating their use, and to name actions shown in pictures. These results suggest that naming performance depends on the kind of stimulus that is visually presented (object vs. action). The present findings lend support to congnitive models which postulate the existence of visual and functional semantic systems.

Humans vs. Robots: Utilization of pointing cues and the mediators of trust in nonverbal communication.

As robots are increasingly acting as communicative agents, it is critical to understand how individuals interpret and utilize their nonverbal information. Pointing gestures are a foundational form of nonverbal communication, yet it remains unclear whether robot-produced pointing is treated as equally communicative as human-produced pointing. The present study examined how pointing gestures were utilized when produced by a Human Hand, a Humanoid Hand, and a Tripod Gripper Hand, and how anticipatory looking related to perceived traits and trust. Eye tracking was used to capture anticipatory visu…

Brain lateralization of complex movement: neuropsychological evidence from unilateral stroke.

Complex movement (CM) refers to the representation of a goal-oriented action and is classified as either transitive (use of tools) or intransitive (communication gestures). Both types of CM have three specific components: temporal, spatial, and content, which are subdivided into specific error types (SET). Since there is debate regarding the contribution of each brain hemisphere for the types of CM, our objective was to describe the brain lateralization of components and SET of transitive and intransitive CM. We studied 14 patients with a left hemisphere stroke (LH), 12 patients with a right h…

Defective pantomime of object use in left brain damage: apraxia or asymbolia?

Disturbance of pantomime of object use in patients with left brain damage (LBD) and aphasia has been firmly established but its nature remains controversial. It may be due to an inability to perform movements from memory without external support by objects (apraxia) or to an inability to produce signs referring to absent objects and actions (asymbolia). The need to perform movements without external support is shared with imitation of gestures, and the demand to designate absent objects with drawing from memory. Both of these tasks have been found to be impaired in LBD. We examined pantomime o…
