Dental plaque-induced gingival conditions.

OBJECTIVE: This review proposes revisions to the current classification system for gingival diseases and provides a rationale for how it dif … ne. The simplified taxonomy of gingival conditions includes: 1) introduction of the term "incipient gingivitis;" 2) a description of the extent and severity of gingival inflammation; 3) a description of the extent and severity of gingival enlargement and; 4) a reduction of categories in the dental plaque-induced gingival disease taxonomy. CONCLUSIONS: Denta …

Oral gingival metastasis: A diagnostic dilemma.

Oral cavity is a rare target for metastasis with an incidence of 1% among all oral cancers. In 24% of such cases, oral metastasis is the first indication of an undiagnosed primary. Metastatic oral malignancies have been reported in the mandible, tongue, and gingiva. Although gingival metastasis has been reported from lung, prostate, rectal carcinoma in men and carcinoma of breast, adrenal glands, and genitalia in females, gingival metastasis from carcinoma of the penis has not been reported. Herein, a case of metastatic gingival carcinoma that developed after extraction of teeth from primary c

[Gingival recessions and periodontal plastic surgery].

Periodontal plastic surgery is defined as the set of surgical procedures that are performed to prevent or correct developmental disorders and anatomical, traumatic and pathological abnormalities of the gingiva, alveolar mucosa, and alveolar bone. Root coverage procedures fall under this term and have been applied for more than fifty years with varying degrees of success. There are several indications for the treatment of gingival recessions. When the treatment of choice - a conservative approach - offers no solace (any more), gingival recessions can be treated by applying periodontal plastic s

The Diagnostic Dilemma of a Granulomatous Gingival Enlargement.

INTRODUCTION: The oral cavity is considered an easily accessible window to the body. The mouth is frequently involved in conditions that affect multiple organs. In many instances, oral involvement precedes the appearance of many other symptoms or lesions. A complete examination of the oral cavity provides a gateway for an accurate diagnosis and precise management of many systemic conditions. Gingival enlargement is one of the varied manifestations of many systemic diseases. Here, a case report of a gingival enlargement is presented that provided information for the diagnosis of post-primary pu

New perspectives in the diagnostic of gingival recession.

Gingival recession (GR) is a common clinical situation observed in patient populations regardless of their age and ethnicity. It has been estimated that over 60% of the human population has gingival recession. It is the final effect of the interaction of multiple etiological factors. Identification and definition of the range of influence is often not possible, with the result that new methods for testing and elimination of potential etiological factors are still being sought. The aim of this study is to present the etiopathogenesis of gingival recessions with regard to the analysis of morphol

A gingival manifestation of histoplasmosis leading diagnosis.

Histoplasmosis is a world-wide distributed deep mycosis caused by Histoplasma capsulatum which has been endemic in many countries. We present a case involving an immunocompetent man evidencing the necessity of a multidisciplinary approach and rational requisition of exams. The disease has started as a pulmonary disease mimicking tuberculosis, although the exams have been negative. Immunodiffusion test indicate histoplasmosis, not confirmed by culture of sputum. After days the patient was forwarded by a private doctor for evaluation of oral lesions at our Department of Stomatology. An incisiona

Gingival evaluation of the pediatric cardiac patient.

PURPOSE: Children with congenital cardiovascular diseases (CCDs) who suffer from dental diseases have an increased risk of infective endocar … arctation of the aorta. The control group consisted of 25 healthy age- and gender-matched children. Gingivitis, plaque, calculus, and recession were measured on six sites per tooth on 12 teeth. RESULTS: CCD children had significantly more gingivitis (P<.001), plaque (P<.001), recession (P>.02), and calculus (P<.001) than controls. Among the CCDs groups, no …

Non-syndromic hereditary gingival fibromatosis.

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis is a rare condition characterised by severe gingival hyperplasia that can occur as an isolated disease or as part of a syndrome or chromosomal abnormality. In severe cases, the gingival enlargement may cover the crowns of teeth and cause severe aesthetic, emotional and functional impairment. This case report gives an overview of gingival fibromatosis in a 22-year-old male patient who presented with generalised gingival enlargement.

Multiple myeloma presenting as gingival hyperplasia.

Multiple myeloma is a malignant neoplasm that is characterized by a monoclonal proliferation of plasma cells. Oral and maxillofacial manifestations as an initial sign or symptom of multiple myeloma are rare. A 58-year-old male patient presented with generalized gingival enlargement for last 6 months. Based on clinical presentation, a diagnosis of gingival hyperplasia was made. After Phase I therapy, excisional biopsy was taken in anterior mandibular region and excised tissue was sent for histopathological examination. The histopathology report revealed a lining of stratified squamous epitheliu

Gingival overgrowth and drug association: a review.

Drugs used locally or systemically induce several alterations in micro and macroscopic tissues. However, nearly 20 drugs have been reported so far in the literature associated with gingival enlargement. Many systemic diseases have limited therapeutic options and such drugs or their metabolites have an adverse influence on different systems/organs, and one of these is that they initiate or accelerate the overgrowth of gingival tissue. The increase in size may be to the extent that teeth may be partially or completely covered, and the resultant 'gummy smile' may result in aesthetic concern for t

Neutrophil fate in gingival crevicular fluid.

The fate of the neutrophils within the inflammatory exudate in the periodontal crevice and their possible participation in the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are of clinical interest. However, the cytological analysis of clinical samples of inflammatory exudate is restricted by the obtainable quantities, which do not enable employing the routine approaches. Clinical examinations, ACLAR strip sampling, scanning electron microscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy were employed to analyze purulent crevicular exudate and gingival crevicular fluid in periodontitis. Bacte

Factors associated with the appearance of gingival papillae.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate factors associated with the fill of inter-dental spaces by gingival papillae. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-six adult subjects were evaluated. Papilla score (PS), tooth form/shape, interproximal contact length and gingival thickness were recorded for 672 maxillary anterior and first pre-molar interproximal sites. Statistical analyses included a non-parametric chi(2) test, anova, the Mixed Procedure for SAS and Pearson's correlation coefficient (r). RESULTS: Papilla deficiency was more frequent in older subjects (p<0.05), as papilla height decrea

Prevention and therapeutic approaches to gingival inflammation.

The most important preventive and therapeutic effort to reduce inflammation is to remove the dental plaque thoroughly. Oral self-care is thus of crucial importance to achieve and maintain oral health. There is a scarcity of scientific evidence on the most effective models for behavioural change aimed to improve oral hygiene. There is a need for randomized-controlled trials, based on behavioural sciences and performed with great methodological rigour, to investigate the usefulness of these proposed behavioural changes. Oral hygiene regimens for patients with natural teeth as well as dental impl

Localized juvenile spongiotic gingival hyperplasia.

We report 52 cases of a unique and pathologically distinctive form of inflammatory gingival hyperplasia in young patients. Clinically, the a … is a distinct subtype of gingival hyperplasia. Although previously described as juvenile spongiotic gingivitis, we propose the term localized juvenile spongiotic gingival hyperplasia as a more accurate designation.
