The possibility of using phytic acid as a precursor to synthesize CaO-P(2)O(5)-SiO(2) glasses by sol-gel method has been explored and the pseudo ternary phase diagram has been established. Studies of cophylogenetic associations between hosts and parasites have become increasingly common. Historically, congruence between host and parasite phylogenies has been seen as evidence for cospeciation. The stability of a combination of chlorpromazine hydrochloride (6.25 mg/mL), hydroxyzine hydrochloride (12.5 mg/mL), and meperidine hydrochloride (25 mg/mL) in glass and plastic syringes was studied. Macroporous glasses, chemically modified by tris-hydroxymethyl-aminomethane, were used for gel-permeation chromatography of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus suspension. The highest yield of purified virus was observed in the carriers containing not less than 0.01 micrograms-equivalent/m2 surface-attached tris-hydroxymethyl-aminomethane groups at pH of the eluent higher than 7.6. The obtained modified porous carriers appeared to be suitable for the purification of both infectious and inactivated preparations of TBE virus.

Glasses were prepared from a number of barbiturates. The viscosities and glass transition temperatures of the glasses were dependent on the structure of the groups present on the C-5 and N-1 atoms. Solid dispersions were prepared from three selected barbiturates formulated with citric acid. The glass transition temperatures of these systems indicated that a 1:1 molar ratio complex was formed between the two components and that intermolecular bonding was stronger in the complex than in the individual components.

Spontaneous nystagmus encountered in neuro-otological practice is nearly always a physical sign of high diagnostic importance. Its localizing value is largely determined by certain of its qualitative characteristics and these are best studied and evaluated by means of the electronystagmograph, but for reasons discussed this is not suitable for use in smaller clinics. For the recognition and qualitative analysis of spontaneous nystagmus the use of Frenzel's glasses used in complete darkness, as recommended by Frenzel himself, has been found to give very satisfactory results.
