Acquired immunodeficiency associated with thymoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Acquired immunodeficiency associated with thymoma is a rare disorder. Here we reported a case of acquired immunodeficiency with … haryngeal candidiasis. Both cerebrospinal fluid and blood cultures yielded multiple short chains of Gram-positive rods later identified as Listeria monocytogenes, so he was diagnosed with Listeria meningitis. Intravenous administration of antibiotics was initiated, and the patient fully recovered and was discharged. Additional examination found normal immunoglobulin …

Helicobacter canis bacteraemia and cellulitis in a patient with end-stage renal disease.

Introduction. Invasive infections by Helicobacter canis are uncommon and occur primarily in immunocompromised patients. Here, we describe a case of H. canis bacteraemia and cellulitis in a patient with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Case presentation. A 49-year-old male with ESRD on haemodialysis presented to an emergency department with cellulitis overlying his left upper extremity arteriovenous fistula for 3 days without constitutional symptoms. Mild leucocytosis and thrombocytopenia was noted on initial laboratory work up. The patient received a dose of vancomycin initially, and then trans

Evaluation of pyrrolidonyl arylamidase for the identification of nonfermenting Gram-negative rods.

To evaluate the activity of pyrrolidonyl arylamidase (PYR) for the differentiation and identification of nonfermenting gram negative rods (NFGNR), 293 isolates were tested. A 24 h culture of each test organism was prepared. From this a 108-109 cfu/mL suspension was added to 0.25 mL of sterile physiologic solution. A PYR disk was then added and the test was incubated for 30 minutes at 35-37 degrees C, at environmental atmosphere. Reading was done by adding 1 drop of cinnamaldehyde reagent. Strains of Acinetobacter baumannii, Acinetobacter haemolyticus, Alcaligenes faecalis, Bergeyella zoohelcum

Cat-scratch neuroretinitis.

BACKGROUND: Cat-scratch disease is a subacute regional lymphadenitis, usually preceded by a history of a cat scratch or exposure to kittens. The disease is caused by Bartonella henselae, and possibly Bartonella quintana, pleomorphic gram-negative rods formerly known as Rochalimaea henselae and Rochalimaea quintana. Ocular involvement is rare and typically manifests as either Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome or neuroretinitis. Patients with neuroretinitis resulting from cat-scratch disease may be asymptomatic or experience mild-to-severe vision loss. The clinical features, angiographic appear

Growth of rhodococcus S1 on anthracene.

Three slow-growing bacteria were isolated from a mixed culture enriched for growth on anthracene, using creosote-contaminated soil as the inoculum. Organisms were shown to use anthracene by the production of a clear zone around the colony after a mineral salts agar plate was sprayed with anthracene. All three bacteria were nonmotile, nonsporulating, gram-positive rods and stained acid-fast. Physiological and biochemical tests, GC content, and cell wall lipid patterns of whole cell methanolysates indicated that they belonged to the Nocardia-Mycobacterium-Rhodococcus group. On the basis of these…

Microbiota associated with residual clefts and neighboring teeth in patients with cleft lip, alveolus, and palate.

Twenty patients with residual clefts or pronounced soft tissue grooves, treated for uni- or bilateral cleft lip, alveolus, and palate were included in this study. Ten patients were recalled for dental prophylaxis at regular intervals, 10 patients were not. One microbiologic sample was obtained from the cleft area and two samples from a tooth adjacent to the cleft (sites adjacent and distant to the cleft). Between the recall and the nonrecall group there were notable differences in the presence of anaerobic Gram-negative organisms. Fusobacterium spp., Prevotella melaninogenica, and P. intermedi

Treatment of skin, skin structure, bone, and joint infections with ceftazidime.

The collective experience with ceftazidime in the treatment of skin, soft tissue, bone, and joint infections is presented. Patients were treated with dosages ranging between 25 and 150 mg/kg per day for between five and 42 days. A total of 570 patients with skin and skin structure infections were treated with ceftazidime. Comparative studies, using either cefamandole or tobramycin plus ticarcillin as control drugs, included 239 patients. There were 600 evaluable patients in five categories of skin or skin structure infection: 252 patients had cellulitis, 107 had wound infections, 103 had absce

Emerging infections: shewanella - a series of five cases.

BACKGROUND: Shewanella spp. are unusual cause of disease in humans; however, reports of Shewanella infections have been increasing. Shewanella is a ubiquitous organism that has been isolated from many foods, sewage, and both from fresh and salt water. Earlier it was named as Pseudomonas putrefaciens or Shewanella putrefaciens. There are several reports describing this organism causing human infections such as cellulitis, abscesses, bacteremia, wound infection, etc. It is oxidase and catalase-positive non-fermenter gram-negative rod that produces hydrogen sulfide. AIMS: The study was conducted

Rapid detection and evaluation of clinical characteristics of emerging multiple-drug-resistant gram-negative rods carrying the metallo-beta-lactamase gene blaIMP.

Gram-negative rods (GNR) carrying the transferable carbapenem resistance gene blaIMP, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Serratia marcescens, have been isolated from more than 20 hospitals in Japan. Although the emergence of such multiple-drug-resistant bacteria is of utmost clinical concern, little information in regard to the distribution of blaIMP-positive GNR in hospitals and the clinical characteristics of infected patients is available. To address this, a system for the rapid detection of the blaIMP gene with a simple DNA preparation and by enzymatic detection of PCR products was devel

Anthrax meningoencephalitis complicated with brain abscess - A case report.

Bacillus anthracis is a sporulating gram-positive rod whose main route of entry into the human body is cutaneous. Anthrax meningitis is usually fulminant and fatal. We present here a successfully treated case of anthrax meningoencephalitis complicated with brain abscess. The patient was a shepherd, with disease onset 7 days prior to hospital admission with fever, chills, occipital headache, and vertigo, followed by right hemiplegia, motor aphasia, agitation and coma. He had cutaneous lesions with black eschar on the limbs, which was a clue (along with his occupation), for diagnosis suspicion.

Leptotrichia buccalis bacteremia in patients with cancer: report of four cases and review.

Leptotrichia buccalis, an anaerobic gram-negative rod, is part of the normal oral flora and has rarely been isolated from clinical material. We describe four patients with neutropenia and progressive malignancy who had symptomatic L. buccalis bacteremia, and we review an additional four cases from the literature. The mean age of the patients was 31 years (range, 7-73 years), with an equal number of males and females. The number of positive blood cultures in each case ranged from one to four (mean, two); these cultures became positive after 48-120 hours (median, 54 hours). All tested isolates w

An Unusual Case of Acute Cholecystitis Caused by Lactobacillus paracasei.

Lactobacillus paracasei is a gram-positive rod commonly found in probiotic foods and is well known to promote healthy gastrointestinal tracts. However, there have been a few case reports that have found Lactobacillus paracasei to be the causative agent in complications such as endocarditis, meningitis, peritonitis, pancreatitis, and cholecystitis. We present the case of a 76-year-old woman who was admitted for decompensated heart failure. The patient also reported abdominal pain in the right upper quadrant. Ultrasound findings suggested cholelithiasis and a subsequent hepatobiliary iminodiacet

Probiotic Bacillus licheniformis competitively establishes and enhances production efficiency, immune responsiveness, and protection against Aeromonas hydrophila O:18 in Cirrhinus mrigala (Ham.).

The use of probiotics is increasingly becoming a strategic tool in aquaculture production systems to mitigate the impacts of antimicrobial resistance. The effects of dietary Bacillus licheniformis on the immune response and disease resistance of Cirrhinus mrigala were investigated following a 30-day growth trial. One hundred eighty fingerlings (10 ± 2 g) were randomly assigned to five groups (three replicates each) and fed either a control diet or diets supplemented with B. licheniformis at 1.0 × 10⁶ cfu g⁻1 (BL-6), 0.5 × 10⁷ cfu g⁻1 (BL-05.7), 1.0 × 10⁷ cfu g⁻1 (BL-7), or 0.5 × 10⁸ cfu g⁻1 (B
