Implant complications, fusion, loss of lordosis, and outcome after anterior cervical plating with dynamic or rigid plates: two-year results of a multi-centric, randomized, controlled study.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, controlled, randomized, multicenter study. OBJECTIVE: To analyze implant complications and speed. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Rigid plate designs, in which the screws are locked to the plate, are in common use and thought to provide more fixation than dynamic designs, in which the screws may glide when the graft is settling. The aim of the study is to analyze (1) implant complications, (2) speed of fusion, (3) loss of lordosis, and (4) clinical outcome in both types of plates. METHODS: One hundred thirty-two patients were included and assigned by randomization to

Comparison of Dynamic Versus Static Locked Retrograde Tibiotalocalcaneal Arthrodesis With Intramedullary Nail Fixation: Evaluation of the RAIN Database.

Hindfoot osteoarthritis (OA) or deformity involving the ankle and subtalar joint is a disabling condition. Tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) fusion is an effective salvage option in pathologies where total ankle replacement is contraindicated. The purpose of this study is to compare the union rate of the ankle joint in proximal static versus dynamically locked retrograde intramedullary nail fixation for tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis. An institutional review board-approved comprehensive chart and radiographic review was performed. TTC arthrodesis performed in patients with OA, post-traumatic arthritis,

Individuals with both perceived ankle instability and mechanical laxity demonstrate dynamic postural stability deficits.

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability is a frequent and serious consequence of lateral ankle sprains. The contribution of perceived instability and potential for mechanical laxity to contribute to the overall deficit in dynamic postural stability is unclear. The purpose was to determine if those with mechanical laxity demonstrated significant differences in dynamic postural stability compared to controls, copers and those with perceived instability. METHODS: Of 93 participants, 83 recreationally active individuals were divided into 4 groups: controls, copers, those with perceived instability,

Evaluation of balance in children with hemophilia and the effect of balance on quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Repeated joint bleeds are reported to decrease static balance in children with hemophilia (CwH). RESEARCH QUESTION: Is dynamic balance affected in CwH? Does dynamic balance affect the quality of life in these patients? METHODS: This cross-sectional study included thirty male children aged 7-18 years diagnosed with hemophilia, along with thirty healthy male children as controls. Dynamic balance was evaluated using the limits of stability (LOS) test and a fall risk test, both conducted via the Biodex Balance System. The quality of life for the hemophilia group was measured using th

High-intensity eccentric hip abductor strength training improves dynamic knee valgus in a task-dependent manner in asymptomatic young women: A pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Dynamic knee valgus is linked to reduced hip abduction strength, a critical factor in knee stability during unilateral movements. While interventions to reduce dynamic knee valgus often use traditional hip abduction training, many neglect the eccentric function of hip abductors, essential for controlling femoral medial translation. This pilot study compared the effects of a four-week-long eccentric vs. concentric hip abduction training on hip abduction torque, countermovement jump performance, dynamic knee valgus measured during one-legged jumping and drop landing, and determined

Comparing spinal loads in individuals with unilateral transtibial amputation with and without chronic low back pain: An EMG-informed approach.

Chronic low back pain (cLBP) is highly prevalent after lower limb amputation (LLA), likely due in part to biomechanical factors. Here, three-dimensional full-body kinematics and kinetics during level-ground walking, at a self-selected and three controlled speeds (1.0, 1.3, and 1.6 m/s), were collected from twenty-one persons with unilateral transtibial LLA, with (n = 9) and without cLBP (n = 12). Peak compressive, mediolateral, and anteroposterior L5-S1 spinal loads were estimated from a full-body, transtibial amputation-specific OpenSim model and compared between groups. Predicted lumbar join
