Cardiovascular Disease in the Peruvian Andes: Local Perceptions, Barriers, and Paths to Preventing Chronic Diseases in the Cajamarca Region.

Objectives: Public health interventions can be improved by understanding peoples' explanatory models of disease. We explore awareness and perceptions of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and options for preventative actions in young adults living in rural Andean communities. Methods: We used convenience sampling to select 46 men and women from communities in Cajamarca (Peru). Subjects participated in eight focus groups where they discussed their understanding and perceived causes of CVD as well as barriers and pathways to healthy lifestyles. Results: Fresh foods, physical activity, unpleasant emot

'Genuine doctor care': Perspectives on general practice and community-based care of Australian men experiencing homelessness.

People with complex health and social needs, including tri-morbidity and homelessness, are challenging for modern healthcare systems. These clients have poor health and social outcomes. They tend to use available health resources inefficiently, with fragmented, uncoordinated use of multiple health and social care services. Increasing access for these clients to well-supported general practice care may be an effective response to these challenges. The aim of this study was to explore client experiences of, and attitudes to, community-based healthcare, and general practice in particular, to iden

A guideline for the prevention and management of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a public health problem globally, with South Africa having the highest recorded prevalence of all countries. Government programmes to prevent and manage FASD remain limited because of the lack of a specific policy. Herein, we developed a guideline to inform policy on the prevention and management of FASD in South Africa. METHODS: We applied a modified version of the World Health Organization's approach to guideline development in three phases. In the first phase, we designed the initial guideline prototype. To do this, we conducted an in-d

Knowledge, perceptions and experiences of trachoma among Maasai in Tanzania: Implications for prevention and control.

BACKGROUND: The Alliance for the Global Elimination of Trachoma has set the target for eliminating trachoma as a public health problem by 2020. However, challenges remain, including socio-cultural issues. Districts in Northern Tanzania, predominantly inhabited by the Maasai ethnic group, remain endemic for trachoma. We explored socio-cultural factors that may impact the elimination of trachoma. METHODS/FINDINGS: This study was nested within a larger ethnographic study of trachoma among Maasai in Northern Tanzania. We used stratified random sampling and semi-structured interviews to examine kn

"We Don't Really Do Anything Unless it's Really Bad": Understanding Adolescent Sun Protective Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviors in the U.S.

Risk factors for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, include lifetime sun exposure and a history of sunburns. However, a minority of adolescents report consistent engagement in sun protective behaviors. The few sun protection interventions that have targeted adolescents have had little effect on behavior change, which suggests that a better understanding of the issue, especially from the adolescents' perspective, is needed. Although efforts to qualitatively examine adolescent sun protection have been carried out in a handful of countries, no studies to date have focused on U.S. adoles

Introducing the reporting system for thyroid fine-needle aspiration cytology according to the new guidelines of the Japan Thyroid Association.

The Japan Thyroid Association (JTA) recently published new guidelines for clinical management of thyroid nodules. This paper introduces their diagnostic system for reporting thyroid fine-needle aspiration cytology. There are two points where the new reporting system that differs from existing internationally-accepted ones. The first is the subclassification of the so-called indeterminate category, which is divided into 'follicular neoplasm' and 'others'. The second is the subclassification of follicular neoplasm into 'favor benign', 'borderline' and 'favor malignant'. It is characterized by se

Carer and staff perspectives on supplementary suckling for treating infant malnutrition: qualitative findings from Malawi.

Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in infants aged <6 months is a major global health problem. Supplementary suckling (SS) is widely recommended as an inpatient treatment technique for infant <6 months SAM. Its aim is to re-establish effective exclusive breastfeeding. Despite widespread support in guidelines, research suggests that field use of SS is limited in many settings. In this study, we aimed therefore to describe and understand the barriers and facilitating factors to SS as a treatment technique for infant SAM. We conducted qualitative interviews and focus group discussions in a hospital

'It depends': Characterizing speech and language therapy for preschool children with developmental speech and language disorders.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have suggested that practitioners hold speech and language therapy (SLT) practice as tacit and consequently it is difficult for the therapist to describe. The current study uses a range of knowledge elicitation (KE) approaches, a technique not used before in SLT, as a way of accessing this tacit knowledge. There is currently no agreed framework that establishes key factors underpinning practice for preschool children with speech and language disorders. This paper attempts to address that gap. AIMS: To develop a framework of SLTs' practice when working with preschoo

Guideline, education, and peer comparison to reduce prescriptions of benzodiazepines and low-dose quetiapine in prison.

Benzodiazepines (antianxiety medications) and quetiapine (an antipsychotic medication) are subject to abuse in prison. Quetiapine is also expensive and has serious side effects. The prescription of these medications in prison for anxiety and insomnia is not the preferred choice. In order to reduce these prescriptions, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-University Correctional HealthCare (UCHC), working within the New Jersey Department of Corrections, provided its psychiatrists with a guideline to the treatment of insomnia in prison. The guideline discouraged pharmacological

Meeting Prevention Beyond Awareness: A Qualitative Study Exploring Attitudes and Beliefs Towards Dating Violence and Prevention Among Emerging Adults.

Dating violence (DV) is an increasingly prevalent phenomenon among emerging adults (aged 18-25 years), and the relationship between awareness and behavior remains poorly understood. This study explores emerging adults' attitudes and beliefs toward DV and summarizes recommendations for designing prevention programs. A qualitative study using three focus groups (n = 16 emerging adults aged 18-25; 56% female) was conducted. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Three main themes emerged: (1) gender roles, (2) healthy intimate relationships, and (

"We are not sick, so why take medicine?" Community perspectives on barriers, facilitators, and implementation strategies for IPTsc in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent preventive treatment for school-aged children (IPTsc) is a newly recommended malaria chemoprevention strategy targeting populations that increasingly sustain malaria transmission in sub-Saharan Africa. Ghana recently added IPTsc into its national malaria strategy, yet evidence on community acceptability and implementation strategies in non-trial settings remains limited. This study explored perceived barriers, facilitators, and preferred implementation strategies for IPTsc in a high-transmission district in Ghana. METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study was conducte

Developing a theory-based health education intervention to prevent adolescent students from smokeless tobacco use.

BACKGROUND: Smokeless tobacco is a kind of tobacco that is chewed or sniffed in the forms of khaini, gutkha, pan parag and zarda paan with tobacco constituents. Although these products are harmful to health, over 300 million people worldwide use them. Its use among adolescent students in Nepal is increasing. A theory-based health education intervention is needed to prevent students from consuming smokeless tobacco. METHOD: Four focus group discussions were conducted among ninth-grade students following guidelines based on the constructs of protection motivation theory. Based on a rigorous revi

Factors promoting eRegister and data use for evidence-based midwifery practice in Lesotho: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Electronic health register's (eRegisters) use have recently gained popularity in Africa. eRegisters are used to capture real-time patient information on several encounters with a healthcare provider. Given poor maternal and child health outcomes in Lesotho, eRegisters provide a promising innovative means of enhancing health outcomes, especially those related to midwifery. eRegisters capture maternal and newborn care services provided at healthcare facilities. Such data are important for informing evidence-based midwifery practice. Lesotho, a landlocked, sub-Saharan African country,
