The various effects of ageing on the auditory system, collectively termed presbycusis, are being studied across a wide range of animal species, including humans. One contributing factor to presbycusis is thought to be losses of the sensory hair cells in the cochlea. Reinfection with hookworm (Necator americanus) following chemotherapy was studied over 2 years in a rural village in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea. The effects of repeated hyperbaric exposures on inner ear function and morphology in guinea pigs were investigated with auditory electrophysiological testing, histopathological and electron microscopic techniques associated with enzyme histochemical method. The results showed that repeated hyperbaric exposures, though considered "safe," did cause damage to the cochlear system. Possible causes of the pathology include direct effects of repeated compression and decompression on the ear, and the possibility of inner ear decompression sickness and barotrauma cannot be excluded.

Vancomycin has been reported to be an ototoxic drug in the clinical literature. At best, this literature is confusing. There are no reports of ototoxicity of vancomycin in experimental animals, even when it is administered concurrently with ethacrynic acid, a drug known to augment the ototoxic effect of most other ototoxic drugs.
