Dream habits in a large cohort of preteens and their relation to sleep and nocturnal awakenings.

The present study examined dream habits, and their relation to sleep patterns, in 1151 preteens (597 boys; 554 girls; 11.31 ± 0.62 years old). Dream questionnaires assessed the frequency of dream recall, nightmare, and lucid dream, as well as the intensity of emotions experienced in dreams. Sleep variables included sleep duration and efficiency, but also different measurements of nocturnal awakenings. Among the preteens, 49.21% of them reported that they recalled dreams several times a week or almost every morning over the past few months. In addition, 52.00% of the preteens reported that they…

The course of sleep habits in newly diagnosed epilepsy in children: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy and sleep have a close, complex, and reciprocal relationship. Sleep may also be adversely affected by epilepsy and anti-seizure medication (ASM). This study sought to determine sleep-related problems before and after six months of treatment with ASMs follow-up in children with epilepsy, to reveal changes in sleep habits, and to determine the effect of ASMs on sleep in different types of epilepsy. METHODS: This is a prospective study that included 61 children, aged 4-18 years with newly diagnosed epilepsy, who regularly had follow-up checks and used ASM for six months, and…

Associations of Oxalate Consumption and Some Individual Habits with the Risk of Kidney Stones.

Kidney stone is a highly recurrent disease in the urinary tract system. Most kidney stones are calcium stones, usually consisting of either calcium oxalate or calcium phosphate. Supersaturation of soluble calcium, oxalate, phosphate, and citrate in the urine is the basis for calcium stone formation. Genetics, diet, low physical activity, and individual habits contribute to the formation of kidney stones. In this review, the associations of the risk of kidney stones with oxalate consumption and some individual habits, such as smoking, alcohol drinking, and opium consumption, are summarized.

Opioid Prescribing Habits of Emergency Department Providers in Response to an Educational Intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Prescription opioid misuse and dependency has been a rising cause for concern in the United States in recent years, and many o … ettings have resulted in fewer post-operative opioid prescriptions and less variance in prescribing habits by providers. This study investigates whether a similar educational intervention within an ED setting results in decreased opioid utilization. It was hypothesized that the educational intervention provided to ED providers would result in a reduction …

Effects of aging and exercise habits on blood flow profile of the ocular circulation.

PURPOSE: We examined the effects of aging and exercise habits on the ocular blood flow (OBF) and its profiles throughout the optic nerve head region and choroidal area. We hypothesized that exercise habits reduce the stiffness of vessels in the ocular circulation, which generally increases with aging. METHODS: Participants in a medical checkup program (698 males and 192 females aged 28 to 80 years) were categorized into 2 groups (with and without exercise habits) based on participant self-reporting and the definition of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan (MHLW). OBF in the rig…

Increased Habit Frequency in the Daily Lives of Patients with Acute Anorexia Nervosa.

Strict eating routines and frequent rigid behavior patterns are commonly observed in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). A recent theory proposes that while these behaviors may have been reinforced initially, they later become habitual. To date, however, research has been overly focused on eating-disorder (ED)-related habits. Over the course of seven days, we applied an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to investigate the habit frequency and strength of ED-specific (food intake) and ED-unspecific (hygiene) habits in the daily lives of a sample of n = 57 AN and n = 57 healthy controls (HC)…

Toxic Habits: An Analysis of General Trends and Biases in Snake Venom Research.

Biases in snake venom research have been partially identified but seldomly quantified. Using the Google Scholar web search engine, we collected a total of 267 articles published between 1964 and 2021, and reviewed them to assess the main trends in this field of study. We developed a 4-category classification of the harmful potential of each of the 298 snake species retrieved from the analysed publications, and tested whether taxonomy, realm of origin, and/or assigned hazard category could affect how often each of them appeared in the articles considered. Overall, viperids were significantly mo

Non-nutritive sucking habits in a child: A clinical protocol to their prevention and management.

Patients presenting with anterior open bites can be challenging to manage. This paper discusses the clinical features and aetiology of anterior open bites caused by non-nutritive sucking habits in a young child. It explores how these should be recognised and how certain interventions can be effective in their management. Whilst further high quality research is needed into the different methods and their effectiveness, the aim of the article is to provide a practical guide for general dental practitioners, orthodontists and paediatric dentists, who are involved in monitoring the developing dent…

Student participation in gambling: the role of social cognition, past behaviour, and habit.

The study examined the relationship between Theory of Planned Behaviour constructs, past behaviour, habit, and future behaviour relating to students' participation in gambling. Using a cross-sectional design, theory constructs, past behaviour, and habit were examined at T1 (N = 250), and gambling behaviour was assessed four weeks later at T2 (N = 180). Results showed attitude and perceived behavioural control (PBC) predicted intention, and intention and PBC predicted behaviour. The inclusion of past behaviour and habit attenuated the effects of attitude and PBC on intention and rendered the im

Psychometric investigation of the Chinese version of the Habit, Reward and Fear Scale (HRFS).

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is one of the most important risk factors for health, and China is the largest producer and consumer of tobacco in the world. Monitoring and controlling the tobacco epidemic is an important issue. However, the motivation underlying smoking behavior is complex and specific to the individual. The Habit, Reward and Fear Scale (HRFS) is a feasible tool to evaluate this complex motivation. OBJECTIVES: To validate the psychometric properties of the HRFS Chinese version (HRFS-C) and to assess the relationship between motivation and smoking behavior. METHOD: We recruited 967

Impact of Covid-19 on consumer behavior: Will the old habits return or die?

The COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown and social distancing mandates have disrupted the consumer habits of buying as well as shopping. Consumers are learning to improvise and learn new habits. For example, consumers cannot go to the store, so the store comes to home. While consumers go back to old habits, it is likely that they will be modified by new regulations and procedures in the way consumers shop and buy products and services. New habits will also emerge by technology advances, changing demographics and innovative ways consumers have learned to cope with blurring the work, leisure, and…

Association of life style and dietary habits with blood choline and cardiovascular outcome.

Whole-blood choline, plasma choline and serum choline are emerging biomarkers in cardiovascular diseases (CVD). To examine the association of Whole-blood choline is an early predictor for cardiac events. Habit History in Oral Submucous Fibrosis: Have We Over Emphasized?

Aim: Correlation of habit duration and frequency with clinical grading and histopathologic grouping of oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF). Materials and methods: 48 patients with OSMF were included in the study. Detailed history of each patient, clinical profile and habit history were recorded. Biopsy was performed for histopathological correlation. All the findings were correlated with Kerr et al and Khanna and Andrade classification. Statistical Analysis: Kruskal-wallis test was performed to assess the correlation between the study findings. Results: Out of 48 OSMF cases majority were males. Max
