A 57-year-old man, operated eight years before for a left frontal falx meningioma, presented with short lasting, stereotyped episodes of paresthesias ascending from the right foot to the hand. A diagnosis of somatosensory seizures with jacksonian march was made. The patient was given antiepilectics but 5 days later, a few hours after another paresthesic episodes, he developed right hemiplegia, hemianesthesia and dysartria due to an infarct of left capsular posterior limb. We deem that in this patient the paresthesic episodes were more likely an expression of a capsular warning syndrome than of

A discrepancy of word choice can be noted in the account of Jacob's wrestling at the river Jabbok (Gen. 32, 23-33) if we compare the Hebrew version on one hand and the Greek and Latin versions on the other. The lesion that incurred Jacob a permanent limp and constitutes the dietary ban on the sciatic nerve is described as a luxation or strain (see symbol) of the hip joint (see symbol) in the Hebrew bible, whereas Septuagint, Vetus Latina and Vulgata use (see symbol) and emarceo or obstipesco as well as (see symbol) and latitudinem faemoris. They thus suggest hints of a painful sensory deficit

We present a female patient with laryngeal anomalies, tracheostenosis and pre- and postaxial polydactyly. Bilateral duplication of the hallux, polydactyly of hands, growth retardation and conductive hearing defect are consistent with oral-facial-digital (OFD) type II syndrome. Three similar cases of OFD syndrome with hypoplasia of the larynx, epiglottis and/or trachea without tibial dysplasia have been previously reported by Silengo and Temtamy and McKusick. The present patient adds one more case to this group of variants of OFD syndrome. We believe that those cases may be considered to form a

Drug reactions resulting from chemotherapy agents are common and frequently affect the skin. Although often benign, a select few of these cutaneous reactions may necessitate immediate changes to the antineoplastic regimens. Given the diversity of chemotherapeutic skin reactions and their complex implications on patient management, an organized conceptual schema is imperative for proper patient care. We evaluate a number of commonly seen chemotherapy-induced skin toxicities organized by pathogenic mechanism and drug class, providing a framework for the identification and categorization of adver

Popliteal pterygium syndrome is a well defined complex that consists of popliteal pterygium, intercrural pterygium, various digital anomalies that include hypoplasia or agenesis of digits, syndactyly, valgus or varus deformities of the feet and oral anomalies such as cleft lip-palate. A baby with the typical anomalies as well as a few unusual features such as mongloid slant, hypertelorism, malformed alae nasi and elbow joint contractures is reported.

A Thai man with Laurin-Sandrow syndrome (LSS, MIM 135750), the ninth reported case, is described. He had an underdeveloped nasal bone, scar-like seams under the nose, large heads of mandibular condyles, and brachymesophalangy of toes as newly observed findings of the syndrome. He also had mental retardation. The patient had duplication of ulna, with triphalangeal thumbs, and polydactyly of one finger. The triphalangeal thumbs were non-opposable. Carpal bones were malformed. Mirror image polydactyly of the toes was present. There were nine toes on the right and eight on the left. Joint abnormal

We report a typical case of papular-purpuric "gloves and socks" syndrome (PPGSS) in which primary infection by parvovirus B19 was demonstrated by seroconversion to this virus; parvovirus B19 DNA was also identified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods in the sera of the patient and in the cutaneous biopsy specimen, both taken 4 days after the onset of clinical manifestations. To our knowledge, this is the fourth published case in which parvovirus B19 DNA has been recovered from the skin by PCR. Serologic studies and PCR investigations in cutaneous biopsy for other viruses including herpe

This report describes two unrelated patients with obesity, mental retardation, body asymmetry, and muscle weakness. Several obesity syndromes with common characteristics have been described. Findings in our patients, in addition to those of the previously reported cases, include body asymmetry, characteristic physiognomy, lordosis, and typical anomalies of hands and feet. These physical manifestations correspond to the Camera-Marugo-Cohen syndrome. Our patients represent the second and third cases of this condition.

We report on a father and daughter in the second known family affected with F-syndrome. The first family, with 8 affected members, was reported by Grosse et al. [1969: BD:OAS V (3):48-63]. F-syndrome, an autosomal-dominant trait, is mainly characterized by acral defects that may also involve the sternum and the lumbosacral spine. Synostoses between capitate and hamate, and between talus and navicular, are invariably present; other carpal and tarsal bones are sometimes incorporated into the fusion. The hand malformation is principally a malformation of the first 2 rays. In our patients, the sho

The Freeman-Sheldon syndrome is a rare congenital myopathy and dysplasia that results in deformity of the face, hands, and feet. We describe here some problems in general anesthesia from the anesthetic management point of view. An 8-year-old girl with Freeman-Sheldon syndrome underwent surgery under general anesthesia for the correction of lip deformity and microstomia. Patients with this syndrome may present anesthetic problems involving difficulties in endotracheal intubation due to microstomia, micrognathia and neck rigidity, as well as postoperative respiratory complications and problems t

We describe a new case of postaxial acrofacial dysostosis (Miller) syndrome. This syndrome consists of mandibulofacial dysostosis, similar to that seen in Treacher Collins syndrome, and postaxial limb deficiency. The mode of inheritance remains uncertain.

We report a 6-month-old boy, born of consanguineous (first-cousin) parents (F = 1/16) presenting microbrachycephaly, wide forehead, marked hypertelorism, broad nose with a midline groove with a bilateral small "blind dimple" in each side, hypospadias, syndactyly between fingers 3 and 4, broad thumbs, and halluces. This association of anomalies suggests the diagnosis of a "new" type of acro-fronto-facio-nasal dysostosis. Normal chromosomes, parental consanguinity, and familial occurrence suggest autosomal recessive inheritance.

Six children with Aarskoga's facial-digital-genital syndrome are described, and the genetics of the condition discussed. We suggest that this anomaly may be fairly common and that a syndrome identification centre could lead to earlier diagnosis of children with this and other syndromes.
