Characterising biomechanical and situational aspects of high magnitude subconcussive impacts in Canadian collegiate football.

The objective of this study was to characterise high magnitude subconcussive impacts in Canadian football to identify injurious relationships between player/game-based characteristics, impact magnitude, and frequency. Eighty-one male university-level football players were equipped with helmet accelerometers to capture peak linear acceleration (PLA), impact frequency, and helmet impact location. Impacts with PLA ≥ 60 g were included in this analysis. Video footage from 15 games over three seasons was analysed to characterise aspects of play including play type, position, closing distance, tackl

Factors influencing equestrian helmet use, purchase and safety perceptions: A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Helmets play a critical role in preventing and reducing the severity of head injuries in high-risk sports. Understanding the factors influencing equestrian helmet use and safety perceptions is needed to optimise injury prevention strategies. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study of 596 equestrian participants aged ≥12 years, we assessed helmet use, factors influencing helmet purchase decisions, and perceptions of helmet safety. Chi square tests and regression models examined differences by age, professional status, jumping versus non-jumping disciplines and concussion history. RE

Helmets with lattice liners can mitigate traumatic brain injury from impacts.

This study explores the effectiveness of architected lattice structures, specifically made of polyamide 12 (PA12) material, as potential helmet liners to mitigate traumatic brain injuries (TBI), with a focus on rotational acceleration. Evaluating three lattice unit cell topologies (simple cubic, dode-medium, and rhombic dodecahedron), the research builds upon prior investigations indicating that PA12 lattice liners may outperform conventional EPS liners. Employing a high-fidelity finite element male head model and utilizing direct and oblique impact scenarios, mechanical quantities, such as ma

Nasal injuries in amateur male boxers before and after the 2013 rule change by the International Boxing Association removing the protective headgear.

Boxing is a popular combat sport in which participants frequently experience head trauma. The neurological impact of boxing has been widely discussed, but the impact on the bone and soft tissue of the head has been less investigated. For this study, a national emergency department database was used to investigate the impact of a 2013 rule change - removing the requirement for amateurs to wear head protection - on the frequency and type of facial injuries sustained by amateur boxers. Over the study period (2006-2021) there were 11 760 injuries, with 6261 occurring before the change and 5499 occ

Head and facial dimensions of Chilean workers for design purposes and the differences with other populations.

BACKGROUND: An appropriate match between a product and its end-users requires anthropometric data, which show variations among different countries. Proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) fit is key for safety and comfort. Chile had no head and facial anthropometric data available in order to design face/head PPE. OBJECTIVE: To describe face/head anthropometric characteristics of Chilean workers. Additionally, this study compared those dimensions against other populations (United States (US), South Korea and China). METHODS: An anthropometric survey involving 21 measures was conducted bet

Full-face motorcycle helmets to reduce injury and death: A systematic review, meta-analysis, and practice management guideline from the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma.

BACKGROUND: While motorcycle helmets reduce mortality and morbidity, no guidelines specify which is safest. We sought to determine if full-face helmets reduce injury and death. METHODS: We searched for studies without exclusion based on: age, language, date, or randomization. Case reports, professional riders, and studies without original data were excluded. Pooled results were reported as OR (95% CI). Risk of bias and certainty was assessed. (PROSPERO #CRD42021226929). RESULTS: Of 4431 studies identified, 3074 were duplicates, leaving 1357 that were screened. Eighty-one full texts were asse

Laboratory Evaluation of Shell Add-On Products for American Football Helmets for Professional Linemen.

The Guardian Cap NXT (GC NXT) and the ProTech Helmet Cap (ProTech) are commercially available aftermarket products designed to augment the energy attenuation characteristics of American football helmets. The ability of these helmet shell add-on products to mitigate the severity of impacts typically experienced by professional offensive and defensive linemen was evaluated for seven helmet models using two test series. In linear impactor tests, the GC NXT reduced head impact severity as measured by the head acceleration response metric (HARM) by 9% relative to the helmets only, while the ProTech

Childhood cycling fatalities in South Australia before and after the introduction of helmet legislation.

In the years following the introduction of legislation in Australian states mandating the wearing of helmets, there was a decline in the number of deaths. Debate has occurred, however, as to why this occurred. The Traffic Accident Reporting System database, which records data for all police-reported crashes in South Australia, was searched for all cases of deaths occurring in the state in bicycle riders aged ≤14 years from January 1982 to December 2001. The numbers of deaths were then compared over the 10-year periods before (1982-1991) and after (1992-2001) the introduction of helmet legislat

Beyond the game: the legacy of Bill Masterton.

Bill Masterton is the only man to die of injuries sustained in a National Hockey League (NHL) game. He remains the last fatality in any professional team sport involving a direct in-game injury in North America. While Masterton was originally thought to have suffered a fatal brain injury while being checked on the ice, later analysis of the case revealed evidence of second-impact syndrome and the effects of prior concussions. Masterton's death sparked both an immediate debate in the NHL on whether helmets should be compulsory and the NHL's first vote on mandatory helmet use. Although the subje

Increasing Lower Extremity Injury Rates Across the 2009-2010 to 2014-2015 Seasons of National Collegiate Athletic Association Football: An Unintended Consequence of the "Targeting" Rule Used to Prevent Concussions?

BACKGROUND: Sports-related concussions (SRCs) have gained increased societal interest in the past decade. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has implemented legislation and rule changes to decrease the incidence and risk of head injury impacts. The "targeting" rule forbids initiating contact with the crown of a helmet and targeting defenseless players in the head and neck area; however, there are concerns that this rule change has unintentionally led to an increased incidence of lower extremity injuries. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the change

[Positional plagiocephaly in infancy: diagnosis and management].

Positional plagiocephaly in the newborn corresponds to a posterior flattening and asymetry of the head. Its incidence has significantly increased since the "back to sleep" campain in the nineteen nineties to prevent sudden infant death syndrome. The posterior deformation usually worsens during the first six months of life when the skull is susceptible to posterior constant pressure which induces the deformation. Spontaneous outcome can be favorable. Treatment is always conservative and consists in positionnal exercise, physiotherapy and osteopathy. In some cases treatment with a helmet is reco

The management of sagittal synostosis using endoscopic suturectomy and postoperative helmet therapy.

OBJECT: Suturectomy as a treatment for craniosynostosis was largely replaced in the late twentieth century by more extensive, but predictable, cranial remodeling procedures. Recent technical innovations, such as using the endoscope combined with postoperative orthotic reshaping, have led to a resurgence of interest in suturectomy as a safer, less invasive method. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for all cases of sagittal synostosis treated with endoscopic sagittal suture strip craniectomy and helmet therapy between 2004 and 2008. Data collected included gestational age, gen

Head-motion-controlled video goggles: preliminary concept for an interactive laparoscopic image display (i-LID).

BACKGROUND: Light-weight, low-profile, and high-resolution head-mounted displays (HMDs) now allow personalized viewing, of a laparoscopic image. The advantages include unobstructed viewing, regardless of position at the operating table, and the possibility to customize the image (i.e., enhanced reality, picture-in-picture, etc.). The bright image display allows use in daylight surroundings and the low profile of the HMD provides adequate peripheral vision. Theoretic disadvantages include reliance for all on the same image capture and anticues (i.e., reality disconnect) when the projected image

Cost effectiveness of wearing head protection on all-terrain vehicles.

The use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) has increased in the United States and elsewhere over the last three decades, along with an increased frequency of incidents resulting in serious injuries, among which have been head injuries. ATVs are designed for motorized off-highway work and recreation, can weigh up to 600 lbs (272 kg), and may reach speeds as high as 75 mph (120 km/h). ATV crashes, including collisions and overturns, were responsible for 8104 fatalities from 1982 to 2006. One third of those killed were youth under 16 years of age. Helmets may reduce risk of death by 42% and nonfatal
