Determining staff and space requirements for military medical centers can be challenging. Changing patient populations change the caseload requirements. Deployment and assignment rotations change the experience and education of clinicians and support staff, thereby changing the caseload capacity of a facility. During wartime, planning becomes increasingly more complex. What will the patient mix and caseload volume be by location? What type of clinicians will be available and when? How many beds are needed at each facility to meet caseload demand and match clinician supply? As soon as these fac

Whereas major incident planning is very well established within National Health Service (NHS) organisations in the UK, business continuity management (BCM) planning, in many cases, is a relatively new activity; however, a combination of factors including the emergence of H1N1 influenza, has led to growing interest in the subject. This paper draws on both the personal experience of the authors and published research in relevant fields to make a number of specific recommendations about the effective implementation of BCM within NHS organisations. These include the need to define the BCM project

Influenza vaccinations and antiviral drugs are the foundation of epidemic and pandemic preparedness, but only close collaboration between public health authorities and industry can achieve the necessary production levels and ensure the smooth distribution necessary to protect European citizens from this public health scourge. To focus the minds of all public health stakeholders, ESWI has translated these simple facts into clear achievable goals: it recommends that EU governments vaccinate one-third of their populations by 2010 and stockpile antiviral drugs for 20% of their citizens while promo

At one time, every state was required by the federal government to have a certificate of need (CON) program. The process was intended to keep down costs associated with the construction of new health facilities in the state, and prevent over development. When the federal requirement was lifted, however, a number of states did away with their programs. Some later restored them in some form, and many have kept their programs alive for years, requiring a governmental seal of approval for building new facilities such as hospitals and long-term care facilities or for acquiring major medical equipme

The Adelaide Statement on Health in All Policies (2010), lays out equity-based principles designed to guide policymakers on incorporating health and well-being components into the development, implementation and evaluation of policy and practice while moving towards shared governance at all levels-local, regional, national and international. Special emphasis is placed on cross-sector coordination to achieve policy goals, while improving health and well-being for all.[1] In Cuba's case, experience in disaster preparedness, particularly for hurricanes, has shown good cross-sector coordination.[2
