Virtual elasto-plastic robot compliance to active environments.

Humans exhibit a particular compliant behavior in interactions with their environment. Facilitated by fast physical reasoning, humans are able to rapidly alter their compliance, enhancing robustness and safety in active environments. Transferring these capabilities to robotics is of utmost importance particularly as major space agencies begin investigating the potential of cooperative robotic teams in space. In this scenario, robots in orbit or on planetary surfaces are meant to support astronauts in exploration, maintenance, and habitat building to reduce costs and risks of space missions. A

Behind the scenes of EQA – characteristics, capabilities, benefits and assets of external quality assessment (EQA): Part V – Benefits for stakeholders other than participants.

External quality assessment (EQA) enhances patient safety through the evaluation of the quality of laboratory-based and point of care testing. Regulatory agencies and accreditation organizations utilize the results and the laboratory's response to them as part of assessing the laboratory's fitness to practice. In addition, where EQA samples are commutable and the assigned value has been determined using reference measurement procedures (RMPs), EQA data contributes to the verification of metrological traceability of assays as part of the post-market surveillance of in vitro diagnostic (IVD) med

Prioritizing Evidence-based Interventions for Dissemination and Implementation Investments: AHRQ's Model and Experience.

BACKGROUND: The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is mandated to implement patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) to promote safer, higher quality care. With this goal, we developed a process to identify which evidence-based PCOR interventions merit investment in implementation. We present our process and experience to date. MATERIALS AND METHODS: AHRQ developed and applied a systematic, transparent, and stakeholder-driven process to identify, evaluate, and prioritize PCOR interventions for broad dissemination and implementation. AHRQ encouraged public nominations, and asse

Ecology and management of arthropod pests of poultry.

The worldwide spread of modern, high-density confined poultry production systems under the direction of integrators has intensified the importance of a select number of arthropod ectoparasites and habitat pests. This concentrated production of poultry provides artificial ecosystems that are sometimes ideal for the development of large populations of arthropod pests. At the same time the systems are amenable to integrated pest management involving a multipest and multimethod approach to reducing or eliminating arthropod pests. Since rodents are major pests, they should be included in an integra

Health Management Information System in Leprosy Control Programme.

Health Management Information System was introduced methodically and enforced with ruthless punctuality in Maharashtra State from April 1981. It has paid excellent dividends so far as the implementation of the National Leprosy Control Programme is concerned. Key indicators have been fixed for new case detection, bacteriological examination, regularity of treatment and screening of old patients for activity status. Monitoring of these activities is done regularly and a feed back is provided. Marks are assigned for each kidney indicator and ranking is done based on the achievement of targets by

[Service system models for adolescent mental health in different institutional contexts and their implications for China].

Based on health systems and multi-level governance theories, an analytical framework of "policy elements-implementation mechanisms-governance outcomes" was developed, covering seven dimensions: legal safeguards, financial commitment, service networks, human resources, digital/remote support, inter-sectoral collaboration, and early prevention and intervention. Structured coding was applied to Brazil, Australia, Germany, and the United States. The coding evidence was limited to laws, strategies, budgets, and project documents issued by governments or government-authorized agencies; materials fro

An Analysis of the School Catering Management System of Thailand Through HiAP's Four Pillars.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Despite the 1992 Primary School Lunch Program Fund Act, Thai children were nutritionally deficient and had low fiber consumption. Although having three ministries-public health, education and interior-involved with the school catering management system, the coordination was inadequate. In 2014, Thailand National Health Assembly (NHA) discussed this issue for better multi-sectoral solutions, and it was considered successful. This study explored the application of WHO Health in All Policies (HiAP)'s four pillars in the implementation of the NHA resolutions on 'School Catering Ma

Evolution of the humanitarian roster system for sexual and reproductive health.

Evidence suggests that the number, scale, and severity of emergencies exceed the international humanitarian system's existing capacity and available resources to meet humanitarian needs, especially for the health sector of which sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is an essential component. Since 1997, the Inter-Agency Working Group on Reproductive Health in Crises's Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) for SRH has been the standard of care for SRH interventions in emergencies, aimed to protect the health, dignity, and rights of women and girls living in humanitarian emergencies. Minimizing the health and climate impacts of emissions from heavy-duty public transportation bus fleets through operational optimization.

In contrast to capital control strategies (i.e., investments in new technology), the potential of operational control strategies (e.g., vehicle scheduling optimization) to reduce the health and climate impacts of the emissions from public transportation bus fleets has not been widely considered. This case study demonstrates that heterogeneity in the emission levels of different bus technologies and the exposure potential of bus routes can be exploited though optimization (e.g., how vehicles are assigned to routes) to minimize these impacts as well as operating costs. The magnitude of the benef

Child health promotion in developing countries: the case for integration of environmental and social interventions?

In spite of improving epidemiological knowledge in relation to child health, the challenge of promoting the survival and quality of life of infants and children in most parts of the developing world remains an abiding public health problem, for both the countries and the international agencies involved. Current infant and child health programmes largely reflect western style medical care, with emphasis placed on reducing mortality, and the preventive aspects confined mainly to immunisation, improved nutrition, provision of micronutrients, promotion of breast-feeding and birth spacing. In contr

Transportability Analyses in Comparative Effectiveness Research: A Conceptual Framework and Methodological Principles Endorsed by the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology.

THE PROBLEM: Transportability considerations are increasingly important to answer research questions in comparative effectiveness research (CER) to support the transfer of evidence on medicinal products across countries or settings. As drug development costs rise and healthcare systems and professionals face economic and resource pressures, leveraging existing data and evidence generated across borders or settings can improve efficiency and inform decisions in product development and decision-making (regulatory, health technology assessment [HTA] and clinical care). Differences in population c

Applying new approach methodologies to assess next-generation tobacco and nicotine products.

In vitro toxicology research has accelerated with the use of in silico, computational approaches and human in vitro tissue systems, facilitating major improvements evaluating the safety and health risks of novel consumer products. Innovation in molecular and cellular biology has shifted testing paradigms, with less reliance on low-throughput animal data and greater use of medium- and high-throughput in vitro cellular screening approaches. These new approach methodologies (NAMs) are being implemented in other industry sectors for chemical testing, screening candidate drugs and prototype consume

Surveillance of Waterborne Disease Outbreaks Associated with Drinking Water - United States, 2015-2020.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Public health agencies in U.S. states, territories, and freely associated states investigate and voluntarily report waterborne disease outbreaks to CDC through the National Outbreak Reporting System (NORS). This report summarizes NORS drinking water outbreak epidemiologic, laboratory, and environmental data, including data for both public and private drinking water systems. The report presents outbreak-contributing factors (i.e., practices and factors that lead to outbreaks) and, for the first time, categorizes outbreaks as biofilm pathogen or enteric illness associated. Launching a National Surveillance System after an earthquake --- Haiti, 2010.

On January 12, 2010, Haiti experienced a magnitude-7.0 earthquake; Haitian government officials estimated that 230,000 persons died and 300,000 were injured. At the time, Haiti had no system capable of providing timely surveillance on a wide range of health conditions. Within 2 weeks, Haiti's Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP), the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), CDC, and other national and international agencies launched the National Sentinel Site Surveillance (NSSS) System. The objectives were to monitor disease trends, detect outbreaks, and characterize the affected po

Developing an early scientific advice framework for health technology assessment in Saudi Arabia: insights from global practices and expert consultations.

BACKGROUND: Early Scientific Advice (ESA) is an independent, non-binding guidance from Health Technology Assessment (HTA) bodies or regulatory authorities to manufacturers before market entry. Unlike company sponsored advisory boards focused on commercial purposes. Saudi Arabia lacks a formal ESA framework representing a policy gap as the country adopts value-based care and evidence-driven reimbursement. This study address gap by proposing a Saudi ESA framework informed by global best practices and stakeholder input. METHODS: A narrative review literature review was conducted across PubMed, E

Gender-transformative HIV and SRHR programme approaches for adolescents and young people: a realist review to inform policy and programmes.

INTRODUCTION: Gender inequalities continue to drive new HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) at rates too high to achieve global goals. In high HIV-burden jurisdictions, this is particularly true for adolescent girls and young women at disproportionate risk, while social and systemic barriers also impede the engagement of young men and gender minorities with health services. We sought evidence of approaches to promote sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes by addressing gender transformation and removing structural barriers that broadly limit prospects for adolescents and youn

Digital health maturity models for Human Resources for Health Information Systems in low- and middle-income countries in Africa: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Health workforce challenges in Africa are exacerbated by fragmented and underdeveloped Human Resources for Health Information Systems (HRH-IS). While digital health maturity models exist, their applicability to HRH-IS in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remains unclear, with limited evidence of context-specific frameworks. AIM: This scoping review aimed to (1) map digital health and health information system (HIS) maturity models, frameworks, tools and guidelines relevant to HRH-IS, and (2) synthesise key domains to inform the development of a context-appropriate HRH-IS ma
