"I've been doing this for years": the COVID-19 pandemic and family caregiver isolation and loneliness.

BACKGROUND: Family caregivers are family members or friends of care recipients who assist with activities of daily living, medication management, transportation, and help with finances among other activities. As a result of their caregiving, family caregivers are often considered a population at risk of experiencing increased stress, isolation, and loneliness. During the COVID-19 pandemic in the US, social isolation and decrease in social activities were a top concern among older adults and their family caregivers. Using secondary analysis of survey data as part of a multi-site implementation

Therapeutic drug monitoring to personalize dosing of imatinib, sunitinib, and pazopanib: A mixed methods study on barriers and facilitators.

BACKGROUND: Personalized dosing based on measurement of individual drug levels and adjusting the dose accordingly can improve efficacy and decrease unnecessary toxicity of oncological treatment. For imatinib, sunitinib, and pazopanib, this therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM)-guided dosing is, however, not routinely used, despite accumulating evidence favoring individualized dosing. Therefore, we aimed to identify and quantify (potential) barriers and facilitators in TDM-guided dosing for imatinib, sunitinib, and pazopanib. METHODS: We performed a mixed methods study among all stakeholders invol

Developing a Peer-to-Peer mHealth Application to Connect Hispanic Cancer Patients.

Cancer and its treatment can significantly impact health-related quality of life (HRQOL) (J Pain Symptom Manag 9 (3):186-192, 1994; Soc Sci Med 46:1569-1584, 1998), particularly for Hispanics (Healthcare Financ Rev 29 (4):23-40, 2008; Psycho-Oncology 21 (2):115-124, 2012). Moreover, providers of cancer support for this population may encounter unique challenges. Grounded in social capital theory, this study identified Spanish-speaking, Hispanic breast cancer survivor support needs and preferences for a mHealth intervention. A user-centered, community-engaged research design was employed, consi

Factors associated with the amount of public home care received by elderly and intellectually disabled individuals in a large Norwegian municipality.

This study reports an analysis of factors associated with home care use in a setting in which long-term care services are provided within a publicly financed welfare system. We considered two groups of home care recipients: elderly individuals and intellectually disabled individuals. Routinely collected data on users of public home care in the municipality of Trondheim in October 2012, including 2493 people aged 67 years or older and 270 intellectually disabled people, were used. Multivariate regression analysis was used to analyse the relationship between the time spent in direct contact with

Too old, too foreign, too replaceable? How AI shapes livelihood security of ageing immigrants.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence is rapidly disrupting high-level cognitive and analytical labour. Yet, while emerging macroeconomic analyses increasingly map AI exposure across broad demographic boundaries, there is a scarcity of qualitative research exploring how these shifts are experienced by highly skilled older immigrant professionals navigating the workforce at the compounding intersection of age, migration status, and professional isolation. METHODS: This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of 32 older immigrant professionals aged 50-55 across four AI-disrupted sectors

Improving the management of post-operative acute pain: priorities for change.

Poor management of post-operative acute pain can contribute to medical complications including pneumonia, deep vein thrombosis, infection and delayed healing, as well as the development of chronic pain. It is therefore important that all patients undergoing surgery should receive adequate pain management. However, evidence suggests this is not currently the case; between 10% and 50% of patients develop chronic pain after various common operations, and one recent US study recorded >80% of patients experiencing post-operative pain. At the first meeting of the acute chapter of the Change Pain Adv

Chronic illness and family: impact of schizophrenia and Crohn's disease on the family quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Quality of life assessments are increasingly present in health research. Chronic and progressive illness of a family member unavoidably affects quality of life of a family as a whole. The goals of this study were to gain insight into the family burden of chronic disorders, especially possible differences in family quality of life (FQOL) in families that have members suffering from either schizophrenia or Crohn's disease, and families in which none of the members have chronic somatic or mental illness, as well as to pilot an instrument for this purpose. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The sa

Factors Influencing the Uptake of Digital Health Interventions for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Among Healthcare Providers: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Digital health interventions (DHIs) offer major potential for improving cardiovascular disease (CVD) primary and secondary prevention, but their adoption by healthcare providers (HCPs) remains inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: To identify barriers and facilitators to DHI uptake in CVD primary and secondary prevention from HCPs' perspectives. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of studies published between 2020 and 2024 that investigated HCPs' perceptions of DHI implementation for CVD primary and secondary prevention. We appraised individual study quality using a validated tool. We p

Quality of life themes in Canadian adults and street youth who are homeless or hard-to-house: a multi-site focus group study.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to identify what is most important to the quality of life (QoL) of those who experience homelessness by directly soliciting the views of homeless and hard-to-house Canadians themselves. These individuals live within a unique social context that differs considerably from that of the general population. To understand the life areas that are most important to them, it is critical to have direct input from target populations of homeless and hard-to-house persons. METHODS: Focus groups were conducted with 140 individuals aged 15 to 73 years who were homeless o

Service users' perspectives on primary eye care services following performance-based financing in Rwanda: an exploratory qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Visual impairment is a major global public health concern, disproportionately affecting populations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where access to eye care services remains limited. In 2019, the Rwandan Ministry of Health integrated eye care services into the Performance-Based Financing (PBF) framework to improve accessibility, service quality, and utilization. However, service users' perspectives on this initiative remain underexplored. This study aimed to examine service users' perceptions of accessibility, quality, affordability, satisfaction, and challenges in acc

Patient and therapist experiences of a self-management group programme for fatigue in primary care: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: As health systems shift care from specialised to primary care settings, questions arise about implementing complex interventions such as self‑management programmes. This is especially relevant for the growing population with chronic neurological disorders requiring long‑term support in primary care. 'Energetic', an interdisciplinary self‑management group programme delivered by occupational therapists and physiotherapists, was originally developed in specialist rehabilitation to improve participation and functional endurance in people with neurological conditions and fatigue.
