[Experience of 76 cases of large vestibular aqueduct syndrome, clinical diagnosis and treatment].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the disease incidence, clinical symptoms, prevention and treatment measures of the large vestibular aqueduct syndrome (LVAS). METHOD: Retrospective analyse the medical history, hearing, vestibular function examination and treatment of 76 LVAS patients who were diagnosed in our department of Otolaryngology from 2002 to 2008. RESULT: Most patients (93.4%) showed sensorineural hearing loss. Part of patients (61.8%) showed air-bone conduction gap in low frequency. The hearing loss of 43 ears is > 40-60 dB HL, > 60 -80 dB HL 47 ears, > 80 dB HL 62 ears. Decline curve is the

[Effect of inner ear hearing loss on delayed otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) and distortion products (DPOAE)].

BACKGROUND: The assessment of inner ear hearing loss by means of evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAE) is already established in practice. Nevertheless, empirical data on the relations between emission and audiologic parameters are required. PATIENTS AND METHODS: EOAEs werde measured and analysed in 240 ears with sensorineural hearing loss (excluding cases with conductive and retrocochlear disorders) of 120 patients using ILO88/92 equipment with standard test conditions. Audiologic examination consisted of pure tone audiogram, tympanometry and auditory brainstem responses. The results of TEOAE

Gray matter volumetric changes in tinnitus: The impact of hearing loss and severity.

Tinnitus is a phantom auditory sensation that commonly co-occurs with hearing loss. Both tinnitus and hearing loss can impact the quality of life, emotional well-being, and cognitive functioning of the affected individuals. While previous studies have highlighted structural alterations in hearing loss and/or tinnitus, the fundamental neural mechanisms underpinning tinnitus severity remain poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a voxel-based morphometry to investigate gray matter (GM) volume differences among groups of participants with varying tinnitus severity and hearing status, and

The Audiological Follow-Up of Children with Symptomatic Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection: An Experience in Two Italian Centers.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection is the leading cause of non-hereditary sensorineural hearing loss in children. While about 10% of children reportedly display symptoms at birth, 85-90% of cCMV infection cases are asymptomatic. However, 10-15% of these asymptomatic infants may later develop hearing, visual, or neurodevelopmental impairments. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of cCMV infection on newborns' hearing function with a particular emphasis on progressive and late-onset cases. METHODS: This study is a retrospective chart analysis with longitudinal character

Bi-allelic inactivating variants in the COCH gene cause autosomal recessive prelingual hearing impairment.

Pathogenic variant in COCH are a known cause of DFNA9 autosomal dominant progressive hearing loss and vestibular dysfunction with adult onset. Hitherto, only dominant nonsynonymous variants and in-frame deletions with a presumed dominant negative or gain-of-function effect have been described. Here, we describe two brothers with congenital prelingual deafness and a homozygous nonsense c.292C>T(p.Arg98*) COCH variant, suggesting a loss-of-function effect. Vestibular dysfunction starting in the first decade was observed in the older patient. The heterozygous parents and sibling have normal heari

Hidden hearing loss: Fifteen years at a glance.

Hearing loss affects approximately 18% of the population worldwide. Hearing difficulties in noisy environments without accompanying audiometric threshold shifts likely affect an even larger percentage of the global population. One of the potential causes of hidden hearing loss is cochlear synaptopathy, the loss of synapses between inner hair cells (IHC) and auditory nerve fibers (ANF). These synapses are the most vulnerable structures in the cochlea to noise exposure or aging. The loss of synapses causes auditory deafferentation, i.e., the loss of auditory afferent information, whose downstrea

Association between serum potassium levels and hearing loss: Evidence from a cross-sectional study based on NHANES.

Hearing loss is a global public health issue, and potassium imbalance may affect inner ear function, thereby impacting hearing. Currently, research on the association between serum potassium levels and hearing loss remains limited. This study utilized National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data to investigate the relationship between serum potassium levels and hearing loss, offering a theoretical basis for the prevention of hearing loss. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression models to examine the association betwee

Click ABR intensity-latency characteristics in diagnosing conductive and cochlear hearing losses.

A schematic description of the correlation between various pathologies of hearing impairments and the behavior of auditory brainstem responses (ABR) is presented. Conductive pathology and high-frequency cochlear hearing losses prolong wave component latency due to energy loss and hair cell dysfunction. In cases of flat cochlear hearing loss latency is not affected. Prolonged interwave latencies between wave I and wave V indicate eight nerve and brainstem disorders. An algorithm was developed in the form of a flow chart for locating various malfunctions. Fields of wave V intensity-latency funct
