Intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) is a rare nonmalignant tumor defined as a benign smooth muscle cell neoplasia in the veins. Patients with IVL may present with symptoms of a uterine leiomyoma such as pelvic pain and vaginal bleeding, or cardiorespiratory symptoms, including dyspnea and leg swelling. We report the case of a 65-year-old otherwise healthy Caucasian woman. Past medical history consisted of hysterectomy and left salpingo-oophorectomy 15 years before for multiple uterine fibromyomas associated with leiomyoma of vascular origin. A thoracoabdominal computed tomography (CT) scan confir

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies and research on laboratory animals link radiofrequency radiation (RFR) with impacts on the heart, brain, and other organs. Data from the large-scale animal studies conducted by the U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP) and the Ramazzini Institute support the need for updated health-based guidelines for general population RFR exposure.
OBJECTIVES: The development of RFR exposure limits expressed in whole-body Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), a metric of RFR energy absorbed by biological tissues.
METHODS: Using frequentist and Bayesian averaging modeling of

Atrial fibrillation (AF) prevalence increases in older patients which also show a high thromboembolic risk. Oral anticoagulants (OACs) are recommended to prevent cardioembolic events and direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) improved anti-thrombotic treatment. However, the benefits/risks of anticoagulant in older patients still need to be completely defined. This retrospective observational study aimed to describe the treatment with OACs in older AF hospitalized patients, and to identify factors influencing OAC therapy or discontinuation using the REgistro Politerapie SIMI. BACKGROUND Cardiac tumors are divided into 2 categories: primary, originating from the heart, and metastatic, which spread to the heart from a different location, with metastatic tumors representing the vast majority. Cardiac tumors, depending on the size and location, can predispose patients to arrhythmic or hemodynamic complications. We present a patient with a history of B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) in remission for 3 years who developed acute onset congestive heart failure and complete heart block secondary to DLBCL invasion of the myocardium. CASE REPORT A 67-year-old female patient with a his

A 78-year-old man admitted to our hospital with signs and symptoms of right ventricular failure, consisting of severe edema of the scrotum and the penis, ankle edema, hepatomegaly, and a history of asthenia associated with a recent weight loss. Two-dimensional echocardiography showed an intracavitary mass in the right atrium and a moderate pericardial effusion; the remaining structures were normal. To better define the origin of this mass, transesophageal echocardiography was performed. The mass extended from the inferior vena cava with no sites of attachment to the atrial wall. The mass was e

BACKGROUND: Patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) are known to complicate pulmonary hypertension (PH). Half of patients with MPN-associated PH have chronic thromboembolic PH (CTEPH); however, the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and treatment response remain unclear.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Nagoya PH registry database was retrospectively analyzed. Of 129 CTEPH patients, 82 were included. Clinical characteristics and treatment response were compared between CTEPH patients with MPN (MPN group) and those without MPN (non-MPN group). As the treatment course at Nagoya University Hospi

The pleura is a thin, smooth, soft-tissue structure that lines the pleural cavity and separates the lungs from the chest wall, consisting of the visceral and parietal pleurae and physiologic pleural fluid. There is a broad spectrum of normal variations and abnormalities in the pleura, including pneumothorax, pleural effusion, and pleural thickening. Pneumothorax is associated with pulmonary diseases and is caused by iatrogenic or traumatic factors. Chest radiography and US help detect pneumothorax with various signs, and CT can also help assess the causes. Pleural effusion occurs in a wide spe

PURPOSE: Solid organ transplant recipients comprise a unique population of immunosuppressed patients with increased risk of malignancy, including hematologic neoplasms. Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) represents a known risk factor for hematologic malignancy and this study describes the prevalence and patterns of CHIP mutations across several types of solid organ transplants.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We use two national biobank cohorts comprised of >650,000 participants with linked genomic and longitudinal phenotypic data to describe the features of CHIP across 2,610 indivi

BACKGROUND: Reduced kidney function has been associated with worse clinical outcomes in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). Statins and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-i) have renoprotective properties and their pleiotropic effects might also affect the malignant MPN clone; however, whether concomitant use of statins and ACE‑i has a positive effect on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in polycythemia vera (PV) patients is currently unknown.
METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study investigated effects of statins and ACE‑i on 12-month eGFR dynamics in

Oxidative stress (OS) implies an imbalance between the amount of tissue level of prooxidant and antioxidant compounds. It is involved in the pathophysiology of multiple pathological entities (neoplasms, disorders of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, cardiovascular and renal pathology etc.), as well as in the pharmacokinetics of specific treatments for these pathologies. Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a chronic myeloproliferative disease for which current standard treatment is BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). It is known that OS is involved in CML pathogenesis and response to TKIs

BACKGROUND: Glomus tumors are rare neoplasms accounting for less than 2% of all soft tissue tumors but multiple lesions may be seen in up to 10% of the patients. Solitary glomus tumor (GT) most frequently appears as small nodule in specific locations such as subungual region or deep dermis. However, rarely these entities have been observed in extracutaneous locations such as the gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory tracts, and other visceral organs. A small fraction of the GTs may present as tumors of uncertain malignant potential or as malignant glomus tumors.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal-dominant neurocutaneous disease with high phenotypic variability. The incidence is approximately one in 5000-10,000 births. TSC is characterized by widespread hamartomas and benign or rarely malignant neoplasms affecting various organs, most commonly the brain, skin, retinas, kidneys, heart, and lungs. The wide range of organs affected reflects the roles of TSC1 and TSC2 genes in the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation. Clinical diagnostic criteria are important because genetic testing does not identify the mutation in up to 25%

As survival rates continue to increase for patients with childhood and adult malignancies, imaging utilization in these patients will likely increase substantially. It is important to detect disease recurrence and to recognize the potential complications that occur after treatment with oncologic medications and therapeutic radiation. The most common cardiotoxic side effect of the anthracycline drug class is a dose-dependent decline in ejection fraction, which may result in dilated cardiomyopathy. Multiple-uptake gated acquisition (MUGA) scanning plays an important role in diagnosis of this sub

BACKGROUND: The canonical function of EEF1A2, normally expressed only in muscle, brain, and heart, is in translational elongation, but recent studies suggest a non-canonical function as a proto-oncogene that is overexpressed in a variety of solid tumors including breast and ovary. Transcriptional profiling of a spectrum of primary mouse B cell lineage neoplasms showed that transcripts encoding EEF1A2 were uniquely overexpressed in plasmacytomas (PCT), tumors of mature plasma cells. Cases of human multiple myeloma expressed significantly higher levels of EEF1A2 transcripts than normal bone marr

Digital clubbing is characterized by bulbous enlargement of the distal phalanges due to an increase in soft tissue. It has been associated with a variety of conditions including cyanotic heart disease, neoplasms and infections of the lungs, bronchiectasis, liver cirrhosis, and inflammatory bowel disease. We conducted an observational study at an urban Veterans Affairs Medical Center outpatient HIV clinic to confirm our clinical impression that clubbing is common in HIV-infected patients and to identify factors that might be associated with it. Clinical, laboratory, and physical examination dat

OBJECTIVES: This study prospectively evaluated the associations of human T-lymphotropic virus type-I (HTLV-I) infection with survival and cancer incidence.
METHODS: The study base comprised 4297 adults (aged 40-69 years in 1993) who had either visited the outpatient clinic or who had received annual health check-ups at the A Hospital, Nagasaki, Japan, between 1985 and 1992 (HTLV-I seropositivity = 24.7%). During the follow-up period (1993-1999 or 2000), 290 deaths and 261 cases of malignant neoplasms occurred, including ten deaths and six incident cases of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL)

In regard to the diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma concerning rare neoplasms in childhood, the presented paper includes the comprehensive description of a malignant pheochromocytoma in a 14-year-old girl on the one hand and the detailed analysis of a collected series of 21 equal cases in pediatric literature on the other hand. In our patient there was in particular a lack of hypertension in spite of proven hypercatecholaminemia, an initially good effect of the post-operative aggressive chemotherapy according to the neuroblastoma study NBL 79 (4b) resulting in a transient reduction of the pulm

Uterine leiomyoma (UL) is the most common benign smooth muscle tumour of the premenopausal women. Rarely it shows malignant behaviour by metastasizing through the pelvic veins into systemic veins, inferior vena cava (IVC), there it is termed as intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL). IVL may restrict itself within the IVC or it may extend into right heart chambers reaching up to pulmonary arteries. Here we report a case of single staged excision of intracardiac(IC) extension of IVL of a 45 -year -old premenopausal women, who have undergone abdominal hysterectomy five years ago, with the complaints o
