Heart rate and microinflammation in men: a relevant atherothrombotic link.

OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND: To explore the possibility that increased resting heart rate (HR) is associated with a microinflammatory response. Such an association could explain, at least in part, the recently described worse cardiovascular prognosis in individuals with increased HR. METHODS: Concentrations of fibrinogen and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, as well as the absolute number of polymorphonuclear leucocytes, were analysed in a cohort of 4553 apparently healthy men and in those with atherothrombotic risk factors. RESULTS: Following adjustment for age and body mass index, lipid pr…

Heart rate and blood lactate during official female motorcycling competitions.

The aim of this study was to investigate the physiological load of free practices (F), qualifying sessions (Q), and official races (R) of motorcycling competitions. Twenty-six female riders (age: 30.8 +/- 6.1 yrs) participated in this study. Anthropometric and strength evaluations were performed. Subject's heart rate (HR) was continuously recorded during three periods (5-minute Pre, Ride, and 5-minute Post) of the F, Q, and R phases of competitions. Blood lactate concentrations (La) were determined at rest and after riding. Riders had 56.5 +/- 6.7 kg of body mass, 164 +/- 4 cm of height, 21.6 …

Alteration of heart rate variability parameters in nondiabetic hemodialysis patients.

OBJECTIVE: We attempt to identify heart rate variability (HRV) components and decide whether or not such components are more sensitive to the hemodialysis (HD) process by excluding the presence of comorbid conditions known to affect HRV. METHODS: It was a prospective cohort study of factors associated with HRV. Thirty-five HD patients were admitted to the study. The research was divided into three phases. During the first phase, baseline Holter and blood pressure recordings were carried out. Then in the second phase, the patients were admitted for HD with continuous Holter and blood pressure …

Heart rate arousal and excitement in gambling: winners versus losers.

People sometimes claim they gamble for excitement rather than money. The authors examined in a laboratory analog whether excitement is generated by the expectancy of winning money. Eighty male undergraduate students watched a videotaped horse race with an exciting neck-to-neck finish. Half bet $1 for a chance of winning $7 if they picked the winning horse; the other half predicted the winning horse without wagering. Winning and losing were experimentally manipulated. Participants with a chance to win money showed greater heart rate (HR) elevations and reported more subjective excitement while …

Heart rate variability during sleep in patients with vasovagal syncope.

BACKGROUND: There are a few studies showing no significant heart rate variability (HRV) over a 24-hour period in vasovagal syncope (VVS) patients, but no research has examined HRV and its sympathetic and parasympathetic components during rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep. The authors hypothesized that REM sleep might be a critical state in which VVS patients would show abnormal responses. OBJECTIVES: To analyze the sympathetic and parasympathetic components of HRV during REM and SWS in patients with VVS compared to normal subjects, and in patients with positive HUTT compared to negat…

Elevated heart rate: a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Mounting evidence shows that elevated heart rate is associated with a greater risk of developing hypertension and atherosclerosis and that it is a potent predictor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. These relationships have been shown not only in general populations but also among hypertensive individuals, with important implications for the treatment of hypertension. In spite of this evidence heart rate has been overlooked as a risk factor, but the fact that in most studies the risk related to fast heart rate remained highly significant after controlling for major risk factors for ath…

Heart rate variability in patients with Brugada syndrome in Thailand.

AIMS: Since patients with Brugada syndrome usually have symptoms at nighttime, we hypothesize that changes in autonomic modulation have an important role in the occurrence of the ventricular fibrillation episodes. The objective of this study was to determine the changes in heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with Brugada syndrome compared to asymptomatic subjects with Brugada ECG and controls. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied 17 patients with Brugada syndrome, 10 asymptomatic subjects with Brugada ECG and 45 controls. Patients with Brugada syndrome and asymptomatic subjects with Brugada E…

Effects of heart rate changes on arterial distensibility in humans.

In rats, an increase in heart rate by pacing is accompanied by progressive large-artery stiffening. Whether this is also the case in humans is unknown. We enrolled 20 patients who were chronically implanted with a pacemaker because of atrioventricular block or sick sinus syndrome. Arterial distensibility was measured by an echo-tracking device. In 10 patients, the evaluation was performed on the radial artery by using continuous finger blood pressure measurements, whereas in the remaining 10 patients, the common carotid artery was studied with a semiautomatic measure of brachial artery blood p…

Cardiac-directed expression of adenylyl cyclase and heart rate regulation.

Mice with cardiac-directed overexpression of AC(VI) show increased cardiac responsiveness to beta-adrenergic receptor stimulation but regulation of heart rate is unknown. Telemetry was used to test the hypothesis that mice overexpressing cardiac adenylyl cyclase type VI (AC(VI)) would have normal heart rate regulation. Mice overexpressing cardiac AC(VI) were generated using the alphaMHC promoter and studied 10 days after implantation of telemetry devices. Cardiac transgene AC(VI) presence and expression was verified using PCR, RT-PCR and immunoblotting. Ambulatory heart rates were assessed usi…

Heart rate dependency of pulse pressure amplification and arterial stiffness.

BACKGROUND: Pulse pressure and aortic pulse wave velocity, measures of arterial stiffness, are both important determinants of cardiovascular risk. However, assessment of peripheral pulse pressure does not always provide a reliable measure of changes in central pulse pressure or arterial stiffness. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of acute changes in heart rate on arterial stiffness and on peripheral and central pulse pressure in healthy subjects. METHODS: Twenty subjects (age range, 20 to 72 years) were studied at cardiac catheterization. Pulse wave analysis was used to d…

Heart-rate variability of carbon disulfide-poisoned subjects in Korea.

OBJECTIVES: Mass poisoning by carbon disulfide (CS(2)) occurred in a viscose-rayon factory in Korea. Including 38 who had died, 830 employees were diagnosed as CS(2) poisoned. We evaluated the heart-rate variability (HRV) among CS(2)-poisoned subjects, to discover whether CS(2) may affect HRV and whether its toxic effect persists after exposure has ceased. METHODS: The case group comprised 71 retired male workers with CS(2) poisoning. The control group comprised 127 public officials of the same age-range who had no history of organic-solvent exposure and cardiovascular diseases. Information o

Power-law behavior of heart rate variability in Chagas' disease.

Beta slope is a nonlinear index derived from the power-law analysis of 24-hour heart rate variability (HRV); in healthy subjects, the beta index is typically near -1, suggesting a fractal behavior of HRV. There is scarce data on HRV in Chagas' disease. This transversal study intends to describe power-law and linear HRV patterns in different forms of Chagas' disease. Patients and healthy controls (n = 26) without other diseases were submitted to a standardized protocol, including electrocardiography, echocardiography, and 24-hour Holter monitoring. Patients with Chagas' disease were divided int…

Effects of impulse noise stimulation on electrocorticogram and heart rate.

It is now recognized that high-level impulse noises penetrate the uterus of pregnant sheep, elevate thresholds of fetal auditory-evoked pote … mpulses delivered to the fetus during periods of NREM sleep resulted in a decrease in average fetal heart rate (FHR) from 185 +/- 22 beats/min (bpm) before stimulation to 174 +/- 23 bpm 2-5 s after stimulation (p < 0.05). During REM sleep, an FHR acceleration occurred (before stimulation: 177 +/- 24 bpm, after stimulation: 189 +/- 31 bpm; p < 0.05). Impulse …

Investigation of noise exposure effect on heart rate variability parameters.

This paper deals with the study of the effect of 135 min exposure to noise with intensity Leq 95 dB(A) in experimental conditions. Three experimental sessions: before, at the onset, and at the end of the noise exposure were conducted. The comparison of heart rate variability (HRV) parameters before and on the onset of the experiment showed tendency for significant decrease of the cardiointervals variability parameters: standard deviation (SD), sum of positive differences between successive cardiointervals (S), total wave energy in the cardiotachogram (S*Ns), mean difference between successive …

Heart rate variability in infants with apparent life-threatening events.

UNLABELLED: Heart rate variability (HRV) is often used as an index of sympatho-vagal balance. A decreased HRV has been observed in patients with central hypoventilation and in infants who have later succumbed to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The aim of the present study was to investigate whether HRV is altered in infants with apparent life-threatening events (ALTE), a group with an increased risk of SIDS. Fifty infants with ALTE were compared with 50 age- and sex-matched controls. ECG was recorded overnight in all infants. Two sequences of RR intervals free of artefacts were selected f…

The human heart rate response profiles to five vagal maneuvers.

Healthy teens and adults performed four vagotonic maneuvers. A large series of strabismus surgery patients had deliberately quantified tension on extraocular rectus muscles during general anesthesia. The mean bradycardia was greatest for diving response (apneic facial exposure to cold) and Valsalva maneuver and least for pressure on the globe and carotid sinus massage. Bradycardia occurred for every subject for the non-surgical maneuvers, however, extraocular muscle tension frequently caused no change in heart rate or even tachycardia. The inter-subject variance in percent heart rate change wa…
