Activation of the cholinergic antiinflammatory reflex by occipitoatlantal decompression and transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation.

CONTEXT: The parasympathetic-mediated inflammatory reflex inhibits excessive proinflammatory cytokine production. Noninvasive techniques, including occipitoatlantal decompression (OA-D) and transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS), have been demonstrated to increase parasympathetic tone. OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that OA-D and taVNS increase parasympathetic nervous system activity and inhibit proinflammatory cytokine mobilization and/or production. METHODS: Healthy adult participants were randomized to receive OA-D (5 min of OA-D followed by 10 min of rest; n=8), taV

Heart Rate Profiles During Exercise and Incident Parkinson's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether established heart rate parameters of exercise, related to cardiac autonomic function, are associated with incident Parkinson's disease, independent of both clinical and autonomic prodromal features. METHODS: A study of UK Biobank participants who performed a standardized bicycle exercise test (2009-2013), followed until November 2022, and analyzed in January 2024, was carried out. Heart rate increase from rest to exercise, and heart rate decrease from peak exercise to recovery were associated with incident Parkinson's disease. Multivariable adjustment was perfo

Exercise training bradycardia is largely explained by reduced intrinsic heart rate.

INTRODUCTION: Resting heart rate (RHR) declines with exercise training. Possible mechanisms include: 1) increased parasympathetic tone, 2) decreased responsiveness to beta-adrenergic stimulation, 3) decreased intrinsic heart rate or 4) combination of these factors. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether an increase in resting parasympathetic tone or decrease in response to beta-adrenergic stimulation contributes to the decrease in RHR with training. METHODS: 51 screened healthy subjects aged 18-32 (n=20, mean age 26, 11 female) or 65-80 (n=31, mean age 69, 16 female) were tested before and after 6m

Vagal Nerve Stimulation Evoked Heart Rate Changes and Protection from Cardiac Remodeling.

This study investigated whether vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) leads to improvements in ischemic heart failure via heart rate modulation. At 7 ± 1 days post left anterior descending artery (LAD) ligation, 63 rats with myocardial infarctions (MI) were implanted with ECG transmitters and VNS devices (MI + VNS, N = 44) or just ECG transmitters (MI, N = 17). VNS stimulation was active from 14 ± 1 days to 8 ± 1 weeks post MI. The average left ventricular (LV) end diastolic volumes at 8 ± 1 weeks were MI = 672.40 μl and MI + VNS = 519.35 μl, p = 0.03. The average heart weights, normalized to body wei

Metaiodobenzylguanidine to map scintigraphically the adrenergic nervous system in man.

Metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) localizes in adrenergic neurons; MIBG labeled with 123I then serves as an analog of norepinephrine, and concentrations of [123I]MIBG reflect sites of adrenergic neurons in organs. Movements of [123I]MIBG into and out of organs were measured by quantitative scintigraphy in man. We perturbed adrenergic neuron function in several ways, and [123I]MIBG concentrations in the heart were subsequently altered in patterns consistent with the concept that [123I]MIBG resides mostly in adrenergic neurons. Uptake of [123I]MIBG into the heart was inhibited by the tricyclic drug

Effect of a beta-adrenergic antagonist on blood pressure, heart rate and beta-adrenoceptors in turkey poults.

An irreversible beta-adrenergic blocker, bromoacetylalprenololmenthane (BAAM), was administered both peripherally and centrally to turkey poults, Meleagris gallopavo. Peripheral administration of BAAM (60 mg/kg body weight) effected a significant reduction in blood pressure and heart rate. Twenty minutes postinjection, mean blood pressure and heart rate were reduced 34.5 and 24.2%, respectively. Two days later, mean blood pressure values remained significantly depressed at 17.3% below preinjection determinations. Biochemical analysis of heart tissue following peripheral (intraperitoneal) injec

Sleep stage detection using only heart rate.

Getting enough quality sleep plays a vital role in protecting our mental health, physical health, and quality of life. Sleep deprivation can make it difficult to concentrate on daily activities, and lower sleep quality is associated with hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia. The amount of sleep we get is important, but in recent years, quality sleep has also been deemed significant. Polysomnography, which has been the gold standard in assessing sleep quality based on stages, requires that the subject be attached to electrodes, which can disrupt sleep. An easier method to objectively

Congestion is the driving force behind heart failure.

Increased filling pressures, or congestion, cause symptoms of heart failure and lead to hospitalizations. A higher rate of hospitalizations determines higher mortality. The most reliable way to decrease admissions is to monitor for signs of congestion, by history and exam, intracardiac pressures or biomarkers, and to modify treatment based on these data. The role of congestion is best understood by comparison of heart failure with preserved and reduced ejection fraction. The morbidity and mortality in both conditions is almost identical. Decreased cardiac output and ventricular remodeling play

[Aortic dissection].

Aortic dissection is an acute lesion of the aortic wall accompanied by separation of the media due to rupture or intramural hematoma. The incidence rate of aortic dissection is 5 to 30 cases per million people a year. Acute aortic dissection is a highly lethal cardiovascular emergency with an incidence of 2000 new cases per year in the United States and 3000 in Europe. The mortality rate of aortic dissection is 3.2/100,000 per year. In case of sudden death of nonhospitalized patients, aortic dissection was proved in 1.5% of necropsy cases. Most of patients die within 48 hours after admission o

Diet affects the cardiorespiratory response to hypoxia and autonomic control of the heart in brook char (Salvelinus fontinalis).

Taurine is the most abundant free amino acid in heart and is important in tissue volume regulation. β-alanine, a common dietary amino acid, decreases cardiac taurine flux in fish and negatively impacts their responses to stress. Brook char (Salvelinus fontinalis) fed a β-alanine enriched diet to induce taurine deficiency (TD) have lower heart rates and less pronounced decreases in heart rate (bradycardia) under hypoxia, but impacts on blood flow in vivo have not been examined. We aimed to determine if changes in taurine flux constrain cardiac output under hypoxia and to characterize the role o

Alteration in the arrhythmogenic dose of epinephrine (ADE) following xylazine administration to halothane-anesthetized dogs.

The arrhythmogenic dose of epinephrine (ADE) was determined in six dogs during halothane (1.35%) anesthesia before and after xylazine administration (1.1 mg/kg, i.v. bolus; 1.1 mg/kg/hr, i.v. infusion). The arrhythmogenic dose was determined by constant infusion of freshly mixed epinephrine (100 microgram/ml). The ADE was defined as the total dose of epinephrine which produced four or more intermittent or continuous premature ventricular contractions within a 15-sec period. Total dose was calculated as a function of infusion rate and time to arrhythmia. Following xylazine administration, ADE s

Haemodynamic effects of distension of the descending colon in anaesthetized dogs.

1. This study was undertaken to determine whether distension of the descending colon in anaesthetized dogs reflexly affects the heart rate, arterial blood pressure or the left ventricular inotropic state. 2. Experiments were performed on twenty-six dogs, which were anaesthetized with sodium pentobarbitone and artificially ventilated. A segment of the distal descending colon was isolated and was distended with warm Ringer solution at a steady intraluminal pressure. 3. In each animal, distension of the colon caused an increase in heart rate and aortic blood pressure. The response of an increase
