BACKGROUND: Treatment of functional mitral regurgitation using transcatheter techniques such as the Cardioband annuloplasty device (Edwards Lifesciences) has gained wide acceptance in the recent years. However, complications of such devices are rarely reported.
METHODS: Here, we present a case series involving two patients with dislocation of the Cardioband device and discuss the surgical management.
RESULTS: In the former the valve was re-repaired by surgical implantation of an annuloplasty ring, and in the latter the valve had to be replaced due to severe damage of the mitral valve annulus

Use of transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) using transcatheter aortic valves in clinical practice is limited to patients with failing bioprostheses and rings or mitral valve disease associated with severe mitral annulus calcification. Whereas the use of valve-in-valve TMVR appears to be a reasonable alternative to surgery in patients at high surgical risk, much less evidence supports valve-in-ring and valve-in-mitral annulus calcification interventions. Data on the results of TMVR in these settings are derived from small case series or voluntary registries. This review summarizes the

BACKGROUND: While the pledget suture technique has been the standard for surgical aortic. valve replacement (AVR), discussion continues regarding the possibility of the nonpledget suture technique to produce superior structural and hemodynamic parameters. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the figure-of-eight suture technique in AVR, as determined by the incidence of prosthesis-patient mismatch (PPM).
METHODS: We reviewed records of patients (N = 629) who underwent a surgical AVR procedure between January 2011 and July 2018 at a single institution. Indexed effective orifice area v

BACKGROUND: Improving health related quality of life is an important goal of aortic valve replacement. Inadequate effective orifice area of prosthesis according to the patient's body surface area may be associated with poor outcomes. In this study, we aimed to analyze impact of indexed effective orifice area (iEOA) on patients' quality of life after aortic valve replacement.
METHODS: A total of 138 patients who underwent isolated aortic valve replacement were included to the study. Quality of life assessment was performed with EuroQol Group EQ-5D-5L questionnaire. Patients were divided into t

AIMS: Remnant cholesterol (RC) seems associated with native aortic stenosis. Bioprosthetic valve degeneration may share similar lipid-mediated pathways with aortic stenosis. We aimed to investigate the association of RC with the progression of bioprosthetic aortic valve degeneration and ensuing clinical outcomes.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We enrolled 203 patients with a median of 7.0 years (interquartile range: 5.1-9.2) after surgical aortic valve replacement. RC concentration was dichotomized by the top RC tertile (23.7 mg/dL). At 3-year follow-up, 121 patients underwent follow-up visit for the a

OBJECTIVES: Despite the benefits of rapid deployment aortic valve prostheses (RDAVR), conventional sutured valves (cAVR) are more commonly used in the treatment for aortic stenosis. Given the paucity of randomized studies, this study aimed to synthesize available data to compare both treatment options.
METHODS: A systematic search of Pubmed, OVID, and MEDLINE was conducted to retrieve comparative studies for RDAVR versus cAVR in the treatment of aortic stenosis. Out of 1773 returned titles, 35 papers were used in the final analysis, including 1 randomized study, 1 registry study, 6 propensity

BACKGROUND: The differences in long-term outcomes of aortic valve replacement for aortic stenosis between stentless and stented bioprostheses are controversial.
METHODS: Between 2007 and 2018, 1173 patients underwent aortic valve replacement for aortic stenosis, including 559 treated with a stentless valve and 614 with a stented valve. A propensity score matched cohort with 348 pairs was generated by matching for age, sex, body surface area, bicuspid aortic valve, chronic lung disease, previous cardiac surgery, coronary artery disease, renal failure on dialysis, valve size, concomitant proced

Biologic aortic valves are constructed with 3 stents corresponding to the commissures, which sit in the aortic root. When implanted using interrupted sutures, these stents may make the valve difficult to tie down safely in patients with small, calcified aortic roots. We present an easily reproducible technique to make this valve tie down safer.

OBJECTIVE: To report early and midterm results registry of patients undergoing repeated aortic valve replacement (RAVR) with sutureless prostheses from an international prospective registry (SURE-AVR).
METHODS: Between March 2011 and June 2019, 69 patients underwent RAVR with self-expandable sutureless aortic bioprostheses at 22 international cardiac centers.
RESULTS: Overall mortality was 2.9% with a predicted logistic EuroSCORE II of 10.7%. Indications for RAVR were structural valve dysfunction (84.1%) and infective prosthetic endocarditis (15.9%) and were performed in patients with previo

To determine the impact of aortic root replacement (ARR) with a stentless bioprosthetic valve on midterm outcomes compared to a stented bioprosthetic valve-graft conduit. This was an observational study of aortic root operations from 2010 to 2018. All patients with a complete ARR for nonendocarditis reasons were included, while patients undergoing valve-sparing root replacements or primary aortic valve replacement or repair were excluded. Of the patients with a complete ARR, bioprosthetic valve implants were included, while mechanical valve implants were excluded. Patients were dichotomized in

Transcatheter mitral valve repair devices borrow from the concept of surgical edge-to-edge approximation and are becoming increasingly used in patients with both primary and functional mitral regurgitation. The application of these new devices is expanding globally; however, debates between which patients are amenable to surgery vs. percutaneous approaches are ongoing. As new trials and regulatory approvals have evolved, the indications for transcatheter approaches have expanded, in a way that is complementaty to existing indications for surgical repair. In general, the treatment of mitral reg

Quadricuspid aortic valve (QAV) is a rare cardiac anomaly which can present with clinically significant regurgitation. The case is presented of a 38-year-old female patient with a regurgitant QAV managed surgically. A review of the current literature relating to QAV is also provided. The most common valve type that is operated on is type B, thus separating the surgical population from that of all QAVs, in which type A is most common. Moreover, aortic aneurysms were found to be a common and previously unrecognized significant characteristic among QAV patients. The majority of patients with a re
