Targeting Ferroptosis as the Achilles' Heel of Breast Cancer: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Opportunities from a Comprehensive Systematic Review.

Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death marked by lipid peroxidation, has emerged as a promising therapeutic target in b … ancer cell populations. Taken together, the evidence highlights ferroptosis as a critical Achilles' heel of breast cancer biology and supports further clinical translation of ferroptosis-inducing therapies to improve outcomes in otherwise refractory breast cancer subtypes.

The Zadek calcaneal osteotomy in Haglund's syndrome of the heel: Clinical results and a radiographic analysis to explain its efficacy.

Local debridement or decompression of the posterior heel in Haglund's syndrome yields variable results. This condition is sometimes due to an excessively long calcaneus rather than simply a large posterosuperior bony prominence. Failure to address this abnormality may explain the poor results in some series. We recently published a new measurement (the X/Y ratio) which, combined with the calcaneal pitch angle, assesses the abnormality of the shape of the calcaneus. The Zadek osteotomy strongly modifies that shape. We retrospectively reviewed 50 patients treated by a Zadek osteotomy at a mean 7…

Ultrasonography assessment of heel entheses in patients with spondyloarthritis: a comparative study with magnetic resonance imaging and conventional radiography.

The aim of the present study was to determine the agreement between ultrasonography (US), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and conventional radiography (CR) in the detection of findings indicative of enthesopathy in spondyloarthritis (SpA) patients. A cross-sectional study was performed in 40 SpA patients. Heel entheses (Achilles tendon and plantar fascia) were bilaterally examined by US, MRI, and CR. The three imaging modalities were carried out by three independent operators blinded to the other imaging modality data. Soft tissue abnormalities indicative of enthesopathy as thickening, struc…

Heel pressure ulcers in orthopedic patients: a prospective study of incidence and risk factors in an acute care hospital.

Heel pressure ulcers (PU) are a major concern in orthopedic patients. A prospective 6-month study was conducted in an acute care hospital in Canada to determine the incidence of heel PU in an orthopedic population, evaluate the effect of patient and care variables on heel PU incidence, and describe the natural history/sequelae of Stage I heel PU. One hundred and fifty (150) patients (average age 70.6 years) admitted for elective orthopedic surgery or treatment of a fractured hip participated in the study. A direct heel skin assessment was performed following admission and before discharge. Pat…

The use of a kickstand modification for the prevention of heel decubitus ulcers in trauma patients with lower extremity external fixation.

External fixation is frequently used to manage patients with lower extremity trauma. Excessive pressure from contact surfaces must be avoided to prevent added morbidity from heel ulcers. The purpose of this article is to present a simple solution to off-load the heel by adding a "kickstand" to the external fixator. The kickstand modification is designed to prevent breakdown of the soft tissue covering of the heel that can complicate the treatment of the initial injury and may also result in calcaneal osteomyelitis. By preventing such damage, the kickstand modification may also help to avoid ra…

[Double use of sural fascio-cutaneous flap with distal pedicle to cover loss of substance of ankle or heel].

The authors report on a case of a distally based fascio-cutaneous flap from the sural region which has been used twice to cover two different cutaneous sites of an ankle. A 50 years old patient underwent a polytrauma including an open fracture of the ankle. The wound at the anterior aspect of the ankle did not heal and the cover by a distally based fascio-cutaneous sural flap was decided and realized successfully. Three weeks later, owing to the development of an ulcer of the heel, it was decided to cover this skin ulceration with the same distally based flap. This second procedure needed a co…
