INTRODUCTION: The C-reactive protein-albumin-lymphocyte (CALLY) index is a novel immunonutritional marker reflecting systemic inflammation and host immune status. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of the CALLY index and compare its performance with other systemic inflammatory indices in hospitalized patients with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA).
METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 124 patients hospitalized with PID and/or TOA between January 2020 and November 2025. Patients were classified into TOA and non-TO

A baby girl, born at term, presented with severe cyanosis and received oxygen supplementation. Consecutive arterial blood gas analysis showed a pronounced right shift of the saturation curve, suggesting the presence of a hemoglobin (Hb) variant. A new (G)γ-globin variant was detected, namely HBG2:c.308G, which we have named Hb F-Sarajevo, the city from where the baby's parents originate. This A to C transversion exists in cis to the common (A)γ(T) and the resulting mutant Hb molecule exhibits very low oxygen affinity and cooperativity. Its analogue in the β-globin gene is Hb Kansas [β102(G4)As

Regional cold perfusion and hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier administration both exert neuroprotective effects against cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury. We herein investigated whether the combination of these two therapies leads to stronger neuroprotective effects. Combination therapy was performed with the regional perfusion of cold HemoAct, a core-shell structured hemoglobin-albumin cluster, in a rat transient middle cerebral artery occlusion model. The effects of combination therapy, the intra-arterial administration of 10 °C HemoAct (10H) initiated at the onset of reperfusion, were comp

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia is associated with increased mortality and poor clinical outcomes in patients with liver cirrhosis. However, the correlation between sarcopenia and recompensation has not been determined until now. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the performance of sarcopenia in predicting recompensation in patients with decompensated cirrhosis.
METHODS: A total of 258 patients with decompensated cirrhosis were enrolled in this retrospective study, and the data of enrolled patients were collected and analyzed.
RESULTS: Overall, 36.82% of patients with decompensated cirrhosis achi

Fetal hemoglobin may be slightly or significantly elevated in post-natal life due to a number of causes. We report two novel mutations found on the promoter of the Aγ gene and summarize all common and rare determinants associated with hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin (HPFH) described thus far. Hematological and molecular analysis of the Aγ globin gene in two cases of HPFH. Comparison of the novel cases with all those described in the literature. We have found two novel mutations in three Italian patients with HbF values between 5.9% and 6.5% without an elevated HbA(2) and with normal

Applying a fast scanning reflection spectrophotometer and multicomponent spectra analysis, oxygen saturation (SHb) and relative concentration (CHb) of hemoglobin in the skin were determined at eight skin sites in 11 healthy persons. SHb was significantly higher at the tip of the index finger and big toe (90 +/- 3.9 and 92 +/- 4.2%, respectively) compared with the forehead, volar forearm, back of hand, abdomen, calf and forefoot where mean values varied between 52 and 67% (p < 0.001). CHb also was higher at acral sites (big toe: 2.04 +/- 0.14 arbitrary units (AU); index finger: 2.13 +/- 0.19 AU

The human fetus in-utero has low arterial oxygen tension. It has, therefore, been suggested that at greater than 28 weeks gestational age, the fetus may have a sensori-neural hearing loss comparable to that seen in adult cats exposed to similar degrees of hypoxia. This is due to hypoxia induced depression of the endocochlear potential. However, fetal blood is provided with compensatory mechanisms (elevated hematocrit and hemoglobin and special fetal hemoglobin) which enable pick up and transport of more oxygen from the placenta than adult blood under the same physiological conditions. Therefor

BACKGROUND: A subset of patients with a bleeding tendency undergoing hemostatic evaluation may be misdiagnosed as bleeding disorder of unknown cause (BDUC).
KEY CLINICAL QUESTION: Should vitamin C deficiency be considered in patients with bleeding symptoms but normal hemostatic test results suggestive of BDUC?
CLINICAL APPROACH: We report on a patient with bleeding symptoms despite normal hemostatic examination, in whom vitamin C deficiency was ultimately identified as the cause of the bleeding disorder. The patient, a 26-year-old man, presented with extensive ecchymoses, anemia, and sclerod

Sickle cell disease variants include hemoglobinopathies that result from inheritance of the sickle cell globin mutation with another globin mutation. The most common variants include the homozygous disease state (Hb SS disease), Hb S (HBB: c.20A>T)/Hb C (HBB: c.19G>A) disease and Hb S/β-thalassemia (Hb S/β-thal). Other rare/less common variants such as Hb S/Hb E (HBB: c.79G>A) and Hb S/HPFH [hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin (Hb)] disease exist. We report the first case of compound heterozygosity for Hb S and Hb Haringey (HBB: c.131A>G) in a 35-year-old male following a positive sickl

Hb Q-Thailand [α74(EF3)Asp→His (α1), GAC>CAC, HBA1: c.223G>C] is an abnormal hemoglobin (Hb) frequently found in Thailand and Southeast Asian countries. The association of the αQ-Thailand allele with other globin gene disorders has important implications in diagnosis. Here, we report how to diagnose the coinheritance of Hb Q-Thailand with β-thalassemia (β-thal)/Hb E disease in four Thai samples from high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and capillary electrophoresis (CE) testing results. Understanding of the HPLC chromatogram and CE electropherogram patterns of this complex mutation is

BACKGROUND: Statin-induced myopathy has been linked to the C allele of a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (rs4149056) of SLCO1B1 gene. This effect is more significant, but not restricted to simvastatin. Many studies have included European, American, African and Southeast Asian ancestries, but few were carried out on Middle Eastern population.
AIM: To detect the prevalence of SLCO1B1 rs4149056 (521T > C) in Emirati population.
METHOD: We recruited 282 Emiratis through the UAE National Diabetes and Lifestyle Project. Ethical approval was obtained before the study starts. Besides basic data

We report on a fetus with cardiomegaly and increased middle cerebral artery-peak systolic velocity at 25 weeks of gestation. Severe fetal anemia (hemoglobin (Hb) level 37 g/L) was confirmed by cordocentesis. Hb analysis showed that Hb Bart's was 9% in cord blood. Molecular analysis of the proband's family found that the mother was a carrier of Hb Quong Sze (Hb QS, HBA2:c.377T>C), the father was a carrier of Hb Zurich-Albisrieden (Hb ZA, HBA2:c.178G>C), and the fetus was a compound heterozygote for Hb ZA and Hb QA. Despite intrauterine blood transfusions, the fetus experienced problems includin
