A genetically engineered herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1, strain RH116) that expresses beta-galactosidase (beta-gal) was used as a marker to trace the route of interocular spread of HSV-1 after anterior chamber (AC) inoculation into BALB/c mice. We have compared the post-operative course of patients requiring penetrating keratoplasty for herpes simplex virus keratitis, keratoconus, and Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy with a minimum of two years follow-up. Whereas Herpes simplex labialis and genitalis are common and simple to diagnose, herpetic eruptions in other areas are relatively rare and often misdiagnosed. We report five cases of Herpes simplex eruption at unusual sites. Diagnosis was delayed up to 20 years and resulted in unnecessary antibiotic treatment. The recurrent nature of this eruption is the key to diagnosis.

Modelling of generalized herpetic infection of Guinea pigs is described. It took the course in the form of acute or subacute recurring process with either involvement of separate internal organs, or disseminated involvement of all visceral organs, or principal involvement of subcortical structures of the brain, or involvement of the brain and spinal marrow and marked vegetative failures. Signs of vasculitis; development of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) syndrome and CNS demyelinization are detected in animals during the terminal period.

The antibody response to herpes simplex virus (HSV) glycoproteins B and D was evaluated using these cloned glycoproteins in an ELISA assay and compared to a standard Western blotting procedure. We present a series of 43 infants with neonatal herpes simplex virus infection treated at the Children's Hospital, University of Helsinki, during a 16-year period from 1970 to 1985. Twelve mothers (28%) had a history of genital herpes during pregnancy, and two had had labial herpes infection. Eight infants (19%) were delivered by cesarean section. The epidemiological and clinical features of recurrent herpes simplex virus ocular infection (RHSV) were studied. Of 108 patients with primary herpes simplex virus ocular infection (PHSV) who were followed up for two to 15 years 35 (32%) suffered one or more recurrent attacks. We have reported a case of severe erythema multiforme caused by outbreaks of recurrent HSV-2 infection. The EM was debilitating and responded to the treatment of HSV with oral acyclovir. On stopping the oral acyclovir, the HSV and the EM both recurred. We recommend a trial of oral acyclovir in cases of severe EM caused by recurrent HSV.

A 27 year old homosexual man developed unusual sacral lesions during a disseminated primary herpetic attack, which was confirmed by viral culture and rising antibody titre. The lesions had a striking framboesiform appearance and healed without ulceration or scarring. Review of modern and historical published reports suggests that this may be the first illustrated description of such infection.

Seven patients with recurrent herpes simplex and sciatic neuralgia are presented. All were premenopausal women, and six had premenstrual onset. Amantadine hydrochloride taken at the first sign and symptoms of herpes simplex vesiculation prevented or aborted neuralgia in the six patients given this medication. Recognition of the herpes simplex sciatica syndrome is important because the signs and symptoms associated with this condition may lead to unnecessary myelography. Herpes simplex radiculitis, including herpes simplex sciatica, may occur more frequently than recognized.
