We report on the detection of HIV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) among 23 regular partners of HIV-infected individuals. 15 of the 46 individuals enrolled in the study were positive for HLA-A2.1 typing. Among the 23 contacts studied, 7 were seropositive and 16 were seronegative on repeated tests. None of the 16 seronegative contacts were positive for p24 antigenemia nor were they positive by the lymphocytes coculture assay, although, in two instances HIV-1 DNA could be detected by PCR (in one case using a gag SK 38/39 primer, and in the other using a primer for the pol P3/P4 primer). One hundred and five heterosexual men without evidence of clinical anogenital warts and attending a genitourinary medicine clinic were studied. Three separate specimens for cytology were taken from (i) the distal urethra including the perimeatal area, (ii) the penile shaft and glans penis including the sub-preputial area, and (iii) from the anorectal area using a proctoscope. Pooled specimens of exfoliated cells from these sites were also taken for the detection of human papillomavirus (HPV) by DNA hybridization. Twenty-eight (27%) of the men had cytological evidence suggestive of HPV infectio

BACKGROUND: Sexual intercourse is integral part of physical well-being health especially in married couple's life. Unhappiness and life dissatisfaction can be positively influenced by sexual inactivity (SI). Sexual inactivity was defined as no sexual frequency among reproductive married women in the last month. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of sexual inactivity and its associated risk factors among Bangladeshi reproductive married women.
METHOD: Cross-sectional study design data from the most recent Bangladesh Health and Demographic Survey conducted in 2022 was utilized. The analy

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority individuals, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and other non-heterosexual (LGB + ) adults have significantly greater risk for mental and physical health conditions, disparities linked with minority stress exposure.
METHODS: Utilizing a Biopsychosocial Minority Stress Framework, this study examined depressive symptoms, anxiety, and inflammatory markers [interleukin(IL)-6 and C-reactive protein (CRP)] in a diverse sample of 661 adults (388 heterosexual; 273 LGB + ).
RESULTS: LGB + adults reported greater anxiety and depressive symptoms (ps < 0.01). This effect was p

BACKGROUND Human papilloma virus (HPV)-16 and HPV-18 are the main high-risk types associated with anogenital cancers. Although the anus and rectum constitute reservoirs for persistent high-risk HPV infection, particularly in individuals with a history of receptive anal intercourse, clinical implications remain underrecognized. Current screening focuses on high-risk groups such as men who have sex with men, human immunodeficiency virus-positive individuals, and immunosuppressed populations; other at-risk groups, including heterosexual women with anal intercourse exposure, are largely underrecog

The China-Myanmar border region is recognized as a hotspot for the emergence of HIV-1 recombinant forms. This study identified a novel HIV-1 circulating recombinant form (CRF) in this area, designated CRF184_BC. Near-full-length genome sequences were obtained from four individuals infected through heterosexual contact: one Chinese individual and three Burmese individuals. These sequences formed a distinct monophyletic clade with strong bootstrap support, separate from all known subtypes/CRFs. Recombination analysis revealed a conserved mosaic structure comprising four subtype C segments and th

Positive family functioning is negatively associated with drug use, sexual risk behaviors, and depression; however, existing measures of family functioning were not specifically developed for Latina/o/x sexual minority youth (LSMY). This study examined the factor structure of family functioning and whether it is invariant across sexual orientation (i.e., LSMY and heterosexual Latina/o/x youth). Participants included 454 Latina/o/x youth (LSMY: n = 115, 25.3%). Results yielded a higher-order family functioning factor consisting of parental involvement, positive parenting, parent-adolescent comm

BACKGROUND: Young cisgender heterosexual men in Australia are the least likely population group to undergo testing for sexually transmissible infections (STI) and ensuring barrier method use during casual sex with cisgender women who have sex with men, with rates of STIs increasing among this group. This research examines how these men navigate sexual health conversations and practices during casual sexual encounters.
METHODS: A total of 30 semi-structured interviews with young cisgender heterosexual men living in Australia during 2021 were conducted. Participants were asked questions about t

As part of an epidemiologic survey, we screened remnant samples collected for STI testing for mpox virus. We identified two cases of presumed MPXV infection in pregnant, heterosexual cisgender women. Here, we describe their pregnancy and birth outcomes. Both patients required induction of labor and experienced labor complicated by chorioamnionitis.

BACKGROUND: Measures to reduce coronavirus disease (COVID-19) transmission may impact sexual health. We aimed to examine the impact of COVID-19 on sexual behavior and sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and to characterize individuals who were at high STI risk.
METHODS: Dutch heterosexual males and females who participated in a cohort study in 2016 to 2018 were invited to fill out 2 questionnaires again in 2020 (age, 21-28 years). We used behavioral and psychological data from: prelockdown (September 2019 to February 2020), lockdown (March to May 2020), and postlockdown (June to Augu

INTRODUCTION: Several HIV risk scores have been developed to identify individuals for prioritized HIV prevention in sub-Saharan Africa. We systematically reviewed HIV risk scores to: (1) identify factors that consistently predicted incident HIV infection, (2) review inclusion of community-level HIV risk in predictive models and (3) examine predictive performance.
METHODS: We searched nine databases from inception until 15 February 2021 for studies developing and/or validating HIV risk scores among the heterosexual adult population in sub-Saharan Africa. Studies not prospectively observing ser

Interpersonal violence is pervasive among youth in the United States. Sexual minority youth are disproportionately impacted. Utilizing data from the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBS, N = 12,868), this study describes the disparities in victimization among heterosexual and sexual minority youth. Sexual minority status was operationalized to include nonheterosexual identity (e.g., bisexual) and/or behavior (e.g., reporting same- and different-sex partners). Other predictors included sex (male/female), a sexuality*sex interaction term, age, and race/ethnicity. Outcomes included

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of symptoms of depression and anxiety with sexual risk behaviour and history, among women and heterosexual men attending genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinics.
METHODS: Attitudes to and Understanding of Risk of Acquisition of HIV (AURAH) was a cross-sectional, self-administered questionnaire study recruited from 20 GUM clinics in England, 2013-2014. This analysis included women and heterosexual men. The prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms was assessed. Modified Poisson regression was used to produce adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) for the associa

Although diagnoses of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among persons who inject drugs in the United States are declining, an HIV outbreak among such persons in rural Indiana demonstrated that population's vulnerability to HIV infection (1). In August 2018, Public Health-Seattle and King County (PHSKC) identified a cluster of cases of HIV infection among persons living homeless, most of whom injected drugs. Investigation identified 14 related cases diagnosed from February to mid-November 2018 among women who inject drugs and men who have sex with women (MSW) who inject drugs and the

Men whose sexual behaviors place them at risk of HIV often exhibit a "cluster" of behaviors, including alcohol misuse and violence against women. Called the "Substance Abuse, Violence and AIDS (SAVA) syndemic," this intersecting set of issues is poorly understood among heterosexual men in sub-Saharan Africa. We aim to determine cross-sectional associations between men's use of alcohol, violence, and HIV risk behaviors using a gendered syndemics lens. We conducted a baseline survey with men in an informal, peri-urban settlement near Johannesburg (Jan-Aug 2016). Audio-assisted, self-completed qu

The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of MEN Count, a race- and gender-tailored three-session counseling intervention, on HIV/STI incidence as well as housing and employment. A two-armed quasi-experimental design was used to compare MEN Count to an attention comparison condition focused on stress reduction, from March 2014 to April 2017. Participants (N = 454) were Black heterosexual men in Washington DC, largely recruited from an STI clinic. Multivariate difference-in-difference regressions assessed whether the intervention was associated with significant changes in the out

INTRODUCTION: Sexual minority girls (SMGs) may be at high risk for substance use partially due to anti-gay discrimination. Low levels of parent-child communication and parental knowledge may contribute to this risk. This study seeks to identify parent-child communication and parental knowledge trajectories, determine the likelihood of SMGs following these trajectories, and describe the relationships between these trajectories, sexual orientation, and substance use.
METHODS: This is a secondary data analysis of the Pittsburgh Girls Study (N = 2450), a longitudinal study on the changes in behav
