We report eight cases of osseous hydatidosis involving the pelvis and hip. All patients were treated by curettage and albendazole therapy. In three cases, in which only the ilium was involved, the outcome was satisfactory. The remaining patients required several debridement procedures in combination with chemotherapy and two developed chronic lesions. We conclude that treatment for this condition is difficult and when the osseous involvement is extensive the prognosis is poor.

Stickler syndrome is an autosomal dominant connective tissue disorder with a prevalence similar to that of Marfan syndrome. No previous study has examined hip pain or abnormalities in a large series of patients with Stickler syndrome. Hip arthroscopy can be performed on an outpatient basis and has a shorter period of rehabilitation than is necessary after an open hip arthrotomy or reconstruction. The procedure makes possible accurate diagnosis and treatment of acetabular labral tears and loose bodies. Further advancements are necessary in optical equipment; manual and motorized equipment; and simple, reliable traction devices specific for this procedure. Refinements in patient selection and the increased availability of specific outcome data will help to define the role of hip arthroscopy in orthopedic practice.

The mode of action of one design of hip protector was investigated. A dummy femur surrounded by a flesh substitute was impacted from a range of heights while the forces on the trochanter and the surrounding flesh were measured. The protector doubled the estimated fall distance for fracture of the trochanter. The protection mechanisms are load transfer to the muscles of the thigh and energy absorption in the protector. Hip protectors could absorb more energy safely if they were thicker, or if the shell design was modified.

A case of idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip is described in a 12 year old female who has the characteristics of arthroophthalmopathy (Stickler's syndrome). This common connective tissue dysplasia may go unrecognized and is possibly an aetiological factor in the development of this disease process. A review of the literature is presented.

The radiation induced osteonecrosis of the hip is a rare complication after radiation therapy. The time of radiological manifestation is dramatically longer (2 to 17 years) than reported from other bones. There is an inverse correlation between age at the time of radiotherapy and the latency time. Sclerosis, focal lyses, fractures and migration of the femoral head are seen in the radiographs. For evaluation of the development of the hip joints in young infants, between Jun., 1988 and Oct., 1991, 522 hips of the infants under 4 months of age were studied by ultrasonography based on the method well described by Graf. Avascular necrosis is a common problem and can be a grossly disabling condition in young patients. Magnetic resonance imaging has revolutionized the diagnosis and assessment of early cases. Core decompression of the femoral head may promote venous drainage and reduce the risk of progressive collapse towards osteoarthritis. However, the authors favour early total joint replacement in patients who are greatly incapacitated.

Ultrasonography of the hip in high risk newborns is the natural extension of clinical examination to the diagnosis of congenital dislocation and dysplasia of the hip. At the end of the first month, ultrasonography allows a better adjustment of therapeutic to the orthopaedic status.

This article discusses the case of a 77-yr-old man suffering from osteonecrosis of the femur head. Diagnostic imaging and clinical manifestations are discussed along with the appropriate patient management. If untreated, osteonecrosis of the hip will often result in severe degenerative joint disease. Successful treatment depends on early diagnosis.

Of 125 patients with traumatic dislocation of the hips treated, 96 were reviewed retrospectively; 80 were males and 16 females with an age range from seven to 81 years (mean, 33.5 years). Motorcycle accidents were the leading cause of traumatic dislocation in this series (40 cases, 42%). Associated injuries were found in 68 cases (70.8%).
