Research on differences in sexual orientation and identity.

The human being is sexed, as there are men and women. The presence of two complementary sexes provides a biological mechanism for evolution and adaptation to changing environments through reproduction with the admixture of distinct genetic traits. Ultimately, this reproductive meaning of sex provides its most important biological foundation. In humans, sexuality also plays a significant role in interpersonal relationships and affection, uniquely contributing to personhood, well-being, and flourishing. In this way, both meanings of human sexuality, reproductive and affective, can be challenged

Meta-Analysis of Demographic Disparities in Monkeypox Infections among Diverse Populations.

This meta-analysis aims to investigate demographic disparities in monkeypox (mpox) infections among various groups based on ethnicity, sexual partners, and gender. The study includes data from 2,646 to 4,002 patients across various outcomes. Among racial demographics, black populations show a lower odds ratio for mpox compared to white populations (OR=0.08 [0.01, 0.45], 95% CI, p=0.004). However, no statistically significant difference is found when comparing black populations with Hispanic or Asian populations (OR=0.72 [0.46, 1.11], p=0.13). There was a substantial disparity between gay, bise

Living in Stealth: A Grounded Theory Study of Transgender Women's Barriers to HIV-Prevention Services and Interventions.

Background and Purpose: HIV infection is a health disparity among transgender women. Despite availability of HIV-prevention interventions and services, many transgender women do not access these interventions and services. The purpose of this study was to identify the process by which barriers may prevent transgender women from receiving HIV-prevention interventions and services and to have participants propose ideas on how to overcome these barriers. Methods: Utilizing a grounded theory approach, 25 in-depth, semistructured interviews were conducted with transgender women aged 20-69 years. Af

Links between sexuality, impulsivity, compulsivity, and addiction in a large sample of university students.

OBJECTIVE: Non-heterosexual populations experience poorer mental health outcomes than their heterosexual counterparts. Few studies, however, have examined how mental health varies across the continuum of sexual orientation. Nor has any study examined possible links between sexual orientation and traits of impulsivity and compulsivity, which contribute to functional impairment across a broad spectrum of psychiatric disorders. To address these limitations, the present study sought to identify addictive and impulsive/compulsive problems associated with sexuality in a university sample. METHODS:

Sexual Violence against Men Who Have Sex with Men and Transgender Women in Mongolia: A Mixed-Methods Study of Scope and Consequences.

The role of sexual violence in health and human rights-related outcomes, including HIV, is receiving increasing attention globally, yet the prevalence, patterns, and correlates of sexual violence have been little-studied among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women in low and middle income countries. A mixed-methods study with quantitative and qualitative phases was conducted among MSM and transgender women in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Methods included respondent-driven sampling (RDS) with structured socio-behavioral surveys (N = 313) as well as qualitative methods including 30 in-

Anatomic autoandrophilia in an adult male.

Some men are sexually aroused by impersonating the individuals to whom they are sexually attracted, or by permanently changing their bodies to become facsimiles of such individuals. Blanchard (J Sex Marital Ther 17:235-251, 1991) suggested that these paraphilic sexual interests, along with fetishism, represented erotic target location errors, i.e., developmental errors in locating erotic targets in the environment. Because the desire to impersonate or become a facsimile of the kind of person to whom one is attracted can have significant implications for identity, Freund and Blanchard (Br J Psy

Counselors' attitudes toward homosexuality: some tentative findings.

The attitudes of 52 counselors and trainees toward homosexuality showed respondents were less likely to accept homosexual persons in eroticized contexts, more likely in noneroticized contexts, with mixed acceptance for homosexuals in sensitive professional positions. Respondents generally accepted homosexuals' civil rights and saw homosexuality as nonpathological and unrelated to morality per se. Social distance theory may explain these results.

Study of STD clinic attenders in England and Wales, 1978. 2. Patterns of diagnosis.

A study of diagnostic patterns in patients attending sexually transmitted disease clinics in England and Wales during 1978 showed that homosexuals contributed 10% of all male cases but 15% of gonococcal infections. In heterosexual and homosexual men only 6% of disease episodes included more than one positive diagnosis compared with 16% in women. One or more diseases occurred concurrently in over 30% of cases of gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis, candidosis, genital herpes, and genital warts in women. Men with multiple episodes of disease contributed a disproportionate number of gonococcal infections

Alcohol, Tobacco, and Comorbid Psychiatric Disorders and Associations With Sexual Identity and Stress-Related Correlates.

OBJECTIVE: The authors examined psychiatric comorbidities associated with alcohol use disorders and tobacco use disorders among heterosexual, bisexual, and gay and lesbian men and women in the United States and whether stress-related factors were predictive of comorbidities. METHODS: The authors used data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (2012-2013, N=36,309) to examine the co-occurrence of past-year alcohol or tobacco use disorder with past-year anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and posttraumatic stress disorder by sexual identity (heterosexual, b

Trait Rumination Predicts Elevated Evening Cortisol in Sexual and Gender Minority Young Adults.

Stress may contribute to illness through the impaired recovery or sustained activity of stress-responsive biological systems. Rumination, or mental rehearsal of past stressors, may alter the body's stress-responsive systems by amplifying and prolonging exposure to physiological mediators, such as cortisol. The primary aim of the current investigation was to test the extent to which the tendency to ruminate on stress predicts diminished diurnal cortisol recovery (i.e., elevated evening cortisol) in a sample of sexual and gender minority young adults. Participants included 58 lesbian, gay, bisex

Does it get better? A longitudinal analysis of psychological distress and victimization in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth.

PURPOSE: The mental health and victimization of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth have garnered media attention with the "It Gets Better Project." Despite this popular interest, there is an absence of empirical evidence evaluating a possible developmental trajectory in LGBTQ distress and the factors that might influence distress over time. METHODS: This study used an accelerated longitudinal design and multilevel modeling to examine a racially/ethnically diverse analytic sample of 231 LGBTQ adolescents aged 16-20 years at baseline, across six time points, and
