Hormone and hormonal agents in the treatment of aggression.

Evidence for the role of androgens in the male aggressive and sexual behavior is reviewed. Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA; Provera, Upjohn) has a marked antiandrogen property; it is effective in lowering the testosterone level and controlling certain otherwise intractable sex deviations. The finding in 6 patients treated for sex deviation are summarized. The effects of MPA in the treatment of 11 temporal lobe epileptics and 5 other patients with severe angry-aggressive behavior disorder are reported. Most temporal lobe epileptics responded well to MPA. Weight gain and earlier sleep were cons

X-chromosome gene dosage shapes MASLD beyond sex hormones.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) shows substantial sex-related differences, often attributed to sex hormones. However, this purely hormone-centric view may be oversimplistic. Studies comparing Turner syndrome (TS, 45X) and Klinefelter syndrome (KS, 47XXY) to euploid controls indicate that variations in X-chromosome dosage are closely associated with cardiometabolic burden and increased MASLD risk, even before puberty and irrespective of sex hormone levels. Transcriptomic studies further reveal genome-wide, dosage-sensitive regulatory effects of X-chromosome quan…

Key hormones for the control of muscle mass: Myokines.

Skeletal muscle is an active metabolic tissue, and muscle health is crucial for maintaining quality of life. During muscle contraction, skeletal muscle cells secrete various proteins called myokines, which participate in the autocrine regulation of muscle and modulate structure and metabolism of other tissues and organs. Myokines have been identified to regulate skeletal muscle glucose and lipid metabolism, protein synthesis and degradation, as well as muscle regeneration, playing a crucial role in maintaining muscle mass and preserving muscle metabolic homeostasis, and alleviating muscle atro

Sex Hormones and Keratoconus: In Search of the Link.

Background: Keratoconus (KC) is the most common ectatic corneal disorder, causing progressive corneal deformation, visual impairment, and reduced quality of life. Although KC pathogenesis is multifactorial, the contribution of systemic factors, including hormonal regulation, remains incompletely understood. This study aimed to investigate the role of sex hormones and gonadotropins in KC in a predominantly Greek population. Methods: We recruited 105 KC patients and 71 healthy controls (HC). Plasma levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol (E2), prolactin …

Thyroid hormones and energy metabolism in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Weight loss, partially caused by hypermetabolism, represents a well-documented and therapeutically relevant feature of the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis phenotype worldwide. In this study, we retrospectively analysed the association between thyroid function and clinical, prognostic and metabolic parameters in a cohort of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in an experienced centre in Germany (n = 1754). Specifically, we examined the relationship between thyroid stimulating hormone levels, age, glucose and body mass index and-in subgroups-phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chain levels

Sex Hormones and Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease.

Positioned at the intersection of sex medicine and endocrinology, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is often managed by specialists who may not be fully familiar with the complex roles of sex hormones in its pathogenesis and clinical course. To address this gap, we review the molecular actions of testosterone, estradiol, and progesterone on liver functions, as well as the role of sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in MASLD histogenesis, highlighting disparities by sex as well as reproductive status. We also discuss how sex hormones influence fatty acid metabolis…

Steroid hormones in pain: Mechanistic underpinnings and therapeutic perspectives.

Pain is a complex sensory and emotional experience that severely affects an individual's quality of life and health status. Steroid hormones, as important regulatory substances in the human body, are extensively involved in various physiological and pathological processes. In recent years, remarkable progress has been made in the research of steroid hormones in the field of pain. They play a crucial role in the occurrence, development, and treatment of pain. This review comprehensively elaborates on the roles and therapeutic mechanisms of steroid hormones in pain, explores the performances of …

From hormones to neurodegeneration: how FSH drives Alzheimer's disease.

The role and function of follicle-stimulating hormone in the gonads have been extremely studied. However, recent research has begun to explore the relationship between elevated follicle-stimulating hormone levels and the prevalence of extragonadal disorders, particularly in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. These disorders include endometrial cancer, osteoporosis, obesity, and atherosclerosis. This review provides new insights into the relationship between follicle-stimulating hormone and the development of age-related diseases, with a focus on Alzheimer's disease. Follicle-stimulating

Critical Role of Iodine and Thyroid Hormones During Pregnancy.

Iodine is an essential micronutrient that is required for thyroid hormone (TH) synthesis. However, adequate maternal thyroid function is critical for fetal growth and neurodevelopment. Pregnancy increases iodine requirements due to enhanced renal clearance, higher maternal TH production, and transplacental transfer, making pregnant women especially vulnerable to iodine deficiency. In this review, we examine the molecular mechanisms of TH synthesis and regulation, placental transport and metabolism, and the physiological adaptations of thyroid function during gestation. We also analyze the clin

Androgenic Steroid Hormones and Endurance Exercise in Athletic Women.

This study investigated the impact of intensive endurance exercise on circulating androgenic steroid hormones in women. Fifteen normally menstruating athletic women participated. They completed intensive endurance exercise (treadmill running) until volitional fatigue in their follicular phase, with blood samples collected at pre-exercise, volitional fatigue, 90 min and 24 h into recovery. The steroid hormones (total, free testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone [DHEA], and DHEA-sulfate [DHEA-S], cortisol) were analyzed in blood sera. Non-parametric statistics were used to assess changes across ex…

From liver to hormones: The endocrine consequences of cirrhosis.

Hepatocrinology explores the intricate relationship between liver function and the endocrine system. Chronic liver diseases such as liver cirrhosis can cause endocrine disorders due to toxin accumulation and protein synthesis disruption. Despite its importance, assessing endocrine issues in cirrhotic patients is frequently neglected. This article provides a comprehensive review of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of endocrine disturbances in liver cirrhosis. The review was conducted using the PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, and Scielo databases, encompassing 172 articles. Li
