Ankistromeces Nolan & Cribb, 2004 and Phthinomita Nolan & Cribb, 2006 are sister genera of threadlike blood flukes (Trematoda: Aporocotylidae) infecting teleost fishes of the tropical Indo-west Pacific. Here, we report new collections of these genera from Australia, Indonesia, and Japan. A new species of Ankistromeces, Ankistromeces kawamurai n. sp., is described from Siganus spinus (Linnaeus) off Okinawa, Japan, and a new species of Phthinomita, Phthinomita abdita n. sp., from Choerodon cephalotes (Castelnau), in Moreton Bay, Australia; the new species are morphologically cryptic within their

This study aimed to report the first record of the occurrence of the parasite Livoneca guianensis in Leporinus fasciatus in Brazil. In September 2019, during surveys of the parasites in 12 specimens of L. fasciatus from the lower Jari River basin, in Amapá State, Brazil, one specimen of L. guianensis was found in the tongue of one host. The prevalence of L. guianensis was 8.3%, and it was observed that this parasite has a geographic distribution restricted to South America, parasitizing fish species from Guyana and Brazil. This study contributed to the first report on the occurrence of L. guia

Haemoproteus Kruse, 1890 (Haemosporida: Haemoproteiidae) parasites are known for their high genetic diversity, avian host-specificity, and wide geographical distribution. Currently, 2019 lineages are registered as Haemoproteus species, but only 160 of them have been linked to morphospecies. Two main open access and independent databases are used to compile genetic, geographical, and host information on Haemoproteus parasites: GenBank and MalAvi. However, the data registered are not integrated, representing an obstacle in investigating Haemoproteus parasites. Here, we review all reported avian

Aedes aegypti is the principal vector for yellow fever, dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses. Although this mosquito continues to expand its global range, its intrinsic ability to acquire, support the replication of, and transmit specific viruses-known as vector competence (VC)-varies across populations. A mechanistic understanding of this variation is a key goal of vector biology and is central to devising interventions to contain epidemics. In this review, we examine how evolutionary history fundamentally shaped VC in the sylvatic and human-adapted subspecies of Ae. aegypti. We discuss how

Antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections remain a major public health challenge, contributing to an estimated 1.27 million deaths in 2019. … and production costs make them attractive antibacterial agents. However, unlike antibiotics, their host specificity requires individualized testing to identify effective phages, typically through plaque assays. This labor-intensive and time-consuming method limits the scalability of phage therapy, especially for large phage libraries. With the remarkable advances …

Knowledge on the epidemiology, host range and transmission of Trichinella spp. infections in different ecological zones in southern Africa including areas of wildlife-human interface is limited. The majority of reports on Trichinella infections in sub-Saharan Africa were from wildlife resident in protected areas. Elucidation of the epidemiology of the infections and the prediction of hosts involved in the sylvatic cycles within specific ecological niches is critical. Of recent, there have been reports of Trichinella infections in several wildlife species within the Greater Kruger National Park

In general, orthopoxviruses can be considered as falling into one of three host-utilization categories: highly specialized, single-host; broad host range; or 'cryptic', the last encompassing those viruses about which very little is known. Single-host viruses tend to exploit abundant hosts that have consistent patterns of interaction. For these viruses, observed genome reduction and loss of presumptive host-range genes is thought to be a consequence of relaxed selection. In contrast, the large genome size retained among broad host range orthopoxviruses suggests these viruses may depend on multi

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis remains a widespread zoonotic disease where serodiagnosis is critical for control. Outer membrane protein 25 (Omp25) has emerged as a promising diagnostic antigen, yet the optimal antigen format for Omp25-based serological assays remains unclear.
METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of diagnostic accuracy studies following PRISMA-DTA 2020 guidelines. Four electronic databases were searched through July 16, 2026. Risk of bias was assessed using QUADAS-2. Diagnostic accuracy was synthesized using the bivariate binomial model, with subgroup analyses

Bacteriophages are being cataloged at an accelerating pace and are recognized as key players in nutrient and energy cycling across ecosystems. Yet the bacterial genetic determinants that govern phage-host specificity and infection success remain poorly understood, particularly in clinically and ecologically important genera such as Klebsiella where prior receptor characterization has been almost entirely limited to capsulated strains. Here we used a randomly barcoded, genome-wide, loss-of-function transposon mutant library (RB-TnSeq) of Klebsiella sp. M5al, a naturally acapsular, nitrogen-fixi…

Rodents, a diverse, globally distributed and ecologically important order of mammals are nevertheless important reservoirs of known and novel zoonotic pathogens. Ongoing anthropogenic land use change is altering these species' abundance and distribution, which among zoonotic host species may increase the risk of zoonoses spillover events. A better understanding of the current distribution of rodent species is required to guide attempts to mitigate against potentially increased zoonotic disease hazard and risk. However, available species distribution and host-pathogen association datasets (e.g.

Preventing and controlling epidemics caused by vector-borne viruses are particularly challenging due to their diverse pool of hosts and highly adaptive nature. Many vector-borne viruses belong to the Flavivirus genus, whose members vary greatly in host range and specificity. Members of the Flavivirus genus can be categorized to four main groups: insect-specific viruses that are maintained solely in arthropod populations, mosquito-borne viruses and tick-borne viruses that are transmitted to vertebrate hosts by mosquitoes or ticks via blood feeding, and those with no-known vector. The mosquito-b

Bivalve stocks have been decreasing in the last decades largely due to emergent diseases and consequent mass mortality episodes. Cerastoderma edule (the edible cockle) is one of the most exploited bivalves in Europe and is among the most common hosts for trematodes, the most prevalent macroparasites in coastal waters but yet poorly studied. Therefore, in the present study, this bivalve species was used as host model to determine if trematode infection exerts a negative effect on bivalve energy metabolism and balance and if the tissues targeted by different trematodes influence the metabolic co

Bacteriophages (phages) are currently available for use by the food industry to control the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes Although phage biocontrols are effective under specific conditions, their use can select for phage-resistant bacteria that repopulate phage-treated environments. Here, we performed short-term coevolution experiments to investigate the impact of single phages and a two-phage cocktail on the regrowth of phage-resistant L. monocytogenes and the adaptation of the phages to overcome this resistance. We used whole-genome sequencing to identify mutations in the target

The protozoan Toxoplasma gondii is believed to be a common parasite of almost all endothermic animals and humans. However, recent reports of toxoplasmosis in marine mammals raise concern that cold-blooded animals may also be a potential source of T. gondii infection. The article discusses the presence of T. gondii in aquatic and terrestrial poikilothermic animals, which may be important elements in the transmission of the parasite.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) in children is challenging due to nonspecific presentations and poor diagnostic yield from conventional microbiologic tests. Host gene expression signatures offer a non-sputum-based diagnostic alternative. This systematic review evaluates their diagnostic performance in pediatric EPTB.
METHODS: We systematically reviewed host-based gene expression diagnostics for pediatric EPTB. PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library (January 1965-May 2025) were searched for studies in children (0-18 years) with EPTB. Exclusions were adult-only studies, m
